Matching foundation to face or chest?

So I’m thoroughly confused when it comes to matching my foundation because my face is noticeably darker than my chest and my arms. Well, my arms are literally 2 different shades. One side of my arms is the same color as my chest and the other side is slightly lighter than my face. There is literally a line down my arms separating the two different tones. I never know what to match my foundation to! My chest which is pretty much my overall color or the color of my actual face? Anyone else have this issue? I just don’t want to look crazy lol.

My face is darker than my neck, chest, and inner arms as well. I find it looks more natural to choose an in-between shade. When I try to match the lighest shades on my body, my face looks ghostly and any redness or darkness seems to pop through quickly.

Re: Matching foundation to face or chest?

i usually go for a color just slightly lighter than my chest (but only slightly lighter).  this is because my face is SO much lighter than my body.  i feel like picking a sort of in between shade helps with blending etc and allows me to wear the shade year round through varying levels of "tan"

Re: Matching foundation to face or chest?

I also match to my chest, because my neck has not always been the same color as my face or body. At one point I had hyperpigmentation on my neck, and I didn't want to match to that, and at other times my neck was lighter than my face/body and I didn't want to match to that either. I just wanted the shade that brought me the most overall harmony I guess. You say that your chest is your overall color, so you may want to go with that. The only issue would be if you are not planning to apply foundation to your entire face, you're just planning to, say, use it to cover redness on your nose and leave the rest of your face bare. Then you would want to match to your face because if you didn't it wouldn't make sense. If you're not sure, I'd just go and get samples of a foundation you're interested in a few different shades and try them out for a week or so. I would guess you'll know by the end of that time.

RE: Matching foundation to face or chest?

I think matching to your neck chest area is the best way to go. A lot of people's faces are naturally shades lighter than they're overall skintone (tanning etc)

RE: Matching foundation to face or chest?

I also match my face to my chest, because I don’t like feeling like I have ghost face!

LOL, you just described me. I do my best to match my chest tbh. I just think it looks more natural.
