How to match foundation

Can people please share their techniques for selecting the correct foundation shade? They have tried using the tool on my face in Sephora and it never works. I ha e been matched with Makeup Forever by the employee in store and I looked like a dead ghost. Then I tried Gorgio Armani Luminous Silk and the "match she selected" still made me like like a corpse. I selected a whole shade darker. And I notice in photos sometimes that my face is still much lighter than my neck. There has to be a better way. What body part do you match your foundation to? Face? Neck? Chest? I wish I could get this right because foundation is expensive and i hate wasting money!  Thank you!

@SarahMU I would suggest getting 3 shades at least from the foundation you want to get and swipe it on your cheek area and wait for it to set on your face to see if it oxidizes or not. The closest one that blends right into the skin is your match. Also watch the Sephora YouTube video with David titled “Find your Foundation Undertone.” I match my foundation to my face and not neck because I like looking not so pale and I can always blend the foundation down to my neck.  I also use 3 foundations and mix them together for the perfect color.

Try matching the foundation to the color of your neck. take a few samples home and test them out in natural light. also, mixing in a few drops of liquid bronzer helps if you need a little darker shade. i'm unsure what skin type you have, but i'd recommend trying Nars foundation spf 35 or It Cosmetics BB cream spf 50. Also visit a professional makeup counter like NARS or M.A.C. they're also really helpful and can educate you in what would work best. happy makeup shopping 🙂

I don't understand why you are having such big troubles. what I do to foundation year round, is get the light color, then get a darker color of any brand and mix it to your perfect match. I usually only add a drop or 2 of the darker one. good luck.
