How do I do makeup?

Hi everyone! Okay, so right off the bat I'm going with full disclosure by letting you guys know that I am a total noob when it comes to makeup. A couple months ago, I went into a Sephora @ JC Penney here in town and they were kind enough to assist with matching me to a foundation (Sephora 10H wear protection #22), but I have hella scaring due to a side effect from a medication I no longer take and this foundation doesn't quite do the trick. My problem is that I have absolutely ZERO idea how to choose a concealer (or how they even work really). And then, also, I'm wondering how the powder foundation works and  if I need to get one.

I'm sure I sound absolutely ridiculous, but I'm finding that, as I get older, doing my makeup is an important ritual. When I was young, it was easy; I was a tomboy and the relatives who took over for my absentee parents didn't really have time to teach me anyway. Now, I'm 33 and I have a desk job and I'm realizing that the societal norms of the 1950s are still holding strong today. And so, with all of that being said, is there anyone out there who can help me?

Hello - I understand the whole professional setting thing - it can be hard if you are not really into wearing makeup.

so just as an aside don’t discount YouTube - their videos can be really helpful just on how to apply makeup. I really recommend checking out “ thataylaa” - she suffers from a lot of acne scarring and texture so her videos could give you some good application tips

So first are you using a primer before applying the foundation? I am not sure what color scarring you have or if it’s just texture but a color correcting primer like this smashbox one could help even out skin tone and blur pores before you apply foundation as well as extending wear time.

Second - how are you applying the foundation? The Sephora 10 hour foundation is listed as buildable. In general I find applying foundation with a brush (check out the real technique ones if you don’t have - they are cheap and decent quality and can be found in your local drug store ) rather than a sponge will give fuller coverage and you may need to apply a little more than you are using to build up the coverage!

Third - Sephora has lots of great concealer options! You could apply and blend that onto your skin with the same brush after you apply your foundation. Here are some you may want to check out! The maybelline age rewind concealer from the drug store is also a good choice.

Whether you want to set with a powder is going to be a personal preference - if the foundation dries down completely and you don’t feel like you need it then don’t bother. If it still feels a bit tacky you may want one. Also you didn’t mention your skin type but if you are oily powder may help with that. Here are some suggestions - also from the drug store the elf 4 color setting powder does a pretty good job

Also i’m not sure all of this also extends to skin care but a vitamin c serum and a resurfacing mask over time could really help with texture and scarring!

Lol so sorry for getting crazy long I got a bit carried away but I hope that helped a little

Re: How do I do makeup?

You didn't go too crazy, so don't worry. This actually has helped me a lot!!! The scarring on my face doesn't have texture, thank god, and as for the coloring some scars are white (the ones on my forehead) and some are red (mainly on my cheeks and jawline). And I have no idea about primers, though if logic and 6 years of automotive experience are correct, then you apply primer before the foundation? How do you build foundation? You lost me there, though I think I recall the lady who color matched me saying something about that. The main hang-up in dealing with concealer is do I use the colors like green, yellow, orange; do I use a concealer to match my foundation (how do you cross reference to color match); do I use both?

I am definitely going to be looking at all of the links that you posted for me (as well as spending approximately all of the money, I'm sure), so thank you so so so so so much for the time and effort you put into helping an experienced girl out 😊

You are right! Primer would be the first thing onto your face after any morning skincare - even if you don’t have texture I still think a primer is a good thing to invest in. It just provides a good canvas for your makeup and helps it last longer. (For redness the cane and Austin primer is also good but that’s a bit pricey )

So the way building up foundation works is you would go in and apply foundation over your face per normal and then if you do not feel you got enough coverage you can go in with a second thin layer - You want a second layer to be super thin to avoid your foundation getting cakey (I know I already suggested it but if you watch thataylaa on YouTube in her foundation Friday videos she often does this and sometimes it’s just easier to see someone do it)

Concealer can get a little more tricky - if you want to color correct with concealer with like different colors (green is usually for redness ) you should do that before foundation. Urban decay has some good ones if you want to try that out but I’m not sure it’s totally necessary. For spot correcting (which you would do after foundation) certain areas you would want a similar color to your current foundation. A lot of people go a shade or two lighter for concealing their under eyes.

Regarding color matching - if you can’t get back to the store search “color iq” in the Sephora search bar. You’ll be able to input your current shade and the program will then assign you a color iq and suggest colors for other products 🙂

RE: How do I do makeup?

If you have texture on your skin or scarring, I wouldn’t suggest a powder foundation. Is your skin oily? Dry? Both? Lol. Those are things you should know to choose a foundation and concealer that’s right for you. If I could give you any advice, it would be to get on YouTube and maybe start watching some Beauty Gurus. There are sooooi many but here are some that I love: Tati RawBeautyKristi Jessica Braun Thattayla Stephanie Nicole Those are my favorite people to watch. I’m sure people will add to the list. Lol. There’s a lot to learn on YouTube.
