Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

Looking for some liquid foundations recommendations!

I've been using MUFE Ultra HD Foundation for about 2 years now, but have been wanting to try a different foundation recently. I'm looking for something that will stay for most of the day, medium - full coverage, for dry skin.

I've been seeing Fenty and Huda a lot, so if any of you have tried it I'd love to get your opinions!

Thanks in advance ❤️

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I just tried Fenty for the last two weeks it’s very drying to my skin and I have combination skin.

RE: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have dry skin, I haven't tried HUDA, but I'm not Fenty's biggest fan. It is very drying for me, feels uncomfortable, and takes a lot of work to look nice and not cakey. I love the Givenchy photo'perfexion foundation for dry skin, but it is more dewy.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I've been using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer water, the Tarte Poreless Primer and 12 Hour Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation with SPF 15. I have a similar skin type and this combo works well for me, the wear time on this usually is about 10-12 hours before I have to retouch. Otherwise, I've been watching a lot of Youtube videos on foundations and think that the YSL Foundation, if you're willing to spend a little more, would work great! It also depends on the type of finish you're looking for.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

My skin is quite dry most days.

I found Fenty to be great coverage, but it dries really quickly and enhances any dry spots.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea is watery but dries really quickly (also be careful applying, that drop likes to drip everywhere), but it's more light-medium coverage and doesn't build well without enhancing dry spots. It's good on days when my skin is less dry.

Huda I wanted to like, but the fragrance is way too much for me and it made my skin feel tighter after a few days of using it.

NARS Sheer Glow is annoying on dry skin. KVD is good coverage but requires a lot of work to look good on dry skin.

CoverFX natural finish is nice on dry skin. Very creamy and doesn't emphasize dryness. I find it needs to be set with a powder.

The Josie Maran Argan foundation is super lovely on dry skin. Medium-high coverage and kind of dewy finish.

Also, if you like your MUFE foundation, have you considered trying the same color in their stick foundation? It's higher coverage than the HD foundaiton but it's nice on dry skin.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have combo skin and am super curious about the Fenti and Huda foundations, too! One foundation I'll always repurchase is Tarte Rainforest of the Sea. The coverage is light-to-medium buildable and it doesn't look cakey on my skin like thicker foundations. It's just a great everyday type of foundation - ask for a sample from Sephora!

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have combo dry skin too. I have been mainly using Fenty beauty foundation, Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion, and Nars Sheer Glow, and occasionally YSL all hours foundation or IT cosmetics CC cream. I used to use MUFE HD foundation ( I stopped using MUFE HD not because its not a great foundation, but there's too many other options I want to try)

Fenty beauty foundation is a beautiful foundation med to full coverage, but it tends to be unforgiving if your skin is dry. It dries down pretty matte to the point you barely have to set it with powder. So I always have to use a good moisturizer and good hydrating primer underneath it. When my skin is stressed/dry, the foundation looks terrible. But when my skin is hydrated, the finish is flawless and beautiful.

Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion tends to dry down less matte, matte-satin finish for me, still really nice foundation. And of course it looks great underneath Laura Mercier Loose setting powder. I probably use this one the most.

Nars Sheer Glow has been around for longer period of time. It's consistency is thin, more medium coverage instead of full for me, more radiant/slightly luminous finish. I can use it and still looks good when my skin is slightly dry.

YSL is probably the most beautiful/ smoothest finish of all of them and I get compliments on my skin when I use this foundation, BUT for me it tends to dry as day goes on/set into my laugh lines. This may have to do with alcohol is like the 3rd or 4th major ingredient, which means probably this isn't a good foundation to use every single day.

If my skin is terrible/dry/patchy/ stressed, I always fall back to IT cosmetics CC cream, it has full coverage/ skincare antiaging ingredients, and looks great even when my skin is terrible, and it has SPF 50 ( and the SPF is physical suncreens too). But unfortunately the CC cream doesn't come in too many shades, I have to mix two shades together to match my skin. And also I always needs to set this one with powder for sure. I also use this one if I'm traveling/ flying because of skincare ingredients, or if I know I'm going to be in sun all day.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

Thank you for such a detailed response @kikyochan!

I've used MUFE Ultra HD because of all the great reviews it had. I could never quite commit to one full bottle of foundation, so I was too worried about trying other brands and just stuck to what was "most popular". However, lately i've felt like the MUFE foundation requires more work to build up and sometimes starts to look cakey (despite using beauty blenders, MORPHE brushes, and even my fingers).

I think I might pick up a bottle of the YSL foundation in addition to the Too Faced foundations that a lot of people have recommended! I'm so glad you mentioned the part where the YSL foundation might not be great for everyday use though because of the alcohol.. Knowing myself, I would probably have no mercy on my skin and use it every day without reading the ingredients!

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

@kikyochan Great detailed response!  I happen to stumble on exactly these options. I was all set to purchase Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation. But then I went in for a makeover & the artist used YSL All hours on me.

I initially did not like it but it sort of changed colors and looked beautiful after sometime.  She also tried Too Faced peach perfect on me and also gave me a sample of  Laura Mercier Flawless fusion.

I am leaning towards YSL All Hours but then saw your post about Alcohol being high on ingredient list so reconsidering. Four that I am considering now -

1. YSL All Hours

2. Laura Mercier Flawless fusion

3. Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation - Artist said this seems to accentuate texture on my face which I had not noticed before.

4. Too Faced Peach Perfect - Hanven't read much about this product

Couple of questions for Kikyochan & Others - Which one do you think has more yellow in it because I think that would look better on my skin. Also which one would you recommend since I am looking to buy just one.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I've only used the YSL All Hours and Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion, but I know that Too Faced Peach Perfect foundation has really good reviews by several well known beauty youtubers/gurus. I haven't heard much about the Bobbi Brown foundation, but if it accentuates texture, then you probably want to skip it. ( I think having visible texture with foundation ages the appearance of skin.)  I'm not sure which one has the most yellow tone.

I think if you already have another foundation that you use on a daily basis, then getting the YSL and use it more on special occasions would be good. But if are looking for something to use everyday, then probably go with the laura mercier or peach perfect

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

hhmm... I'd probably do bit more testing and then decide. For now I was thinking of maye get a BB/CC cream for daily use and YSL All Hours for special occasions.

I got some samples and have been driving my family crazy by putting two different products on wither half of my face and asking them which one looks better. 😄 😄 They just stopped answering me.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have really dry skin and have been happy with several base products from Too Faced - the Born This Way foundation is hydrating but also provides good coverage and is buildable.  It has quite a few shades to choose from.  I also like the Born This Way Concealer.  They make a good primer and setting spray - both are coconut-water based which I've found to be great for my dry skin.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

Thanks for the recommendation! I put the Too Faced Born this way foundation in my cart today, but still need to go make sure I get the right shade!

Right now I'm using the smash box photo finish primer and setting spray, sometimes my MAC Fix+, which I personally love for my skin!

RE: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have oily skin and the katvond and fenty beauty works very nice on my love 😍 them!!!

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I have combination (oily T-zone, dry elsewhere), dehydrated and sensitive skin and for foundation, I've fared well (formula and color match wise) with Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and Too Faced Born This Way Foundation.  Also, it's not a liquid foundation, but I've been loving the Hera UV Ultra Moisture cushion compact.  The Hera compact is the harder one to get a hold of and to find a color match for - very limited selection, but I have found that it is very hydrating.

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

Thanks for all the recommendations! I don't usually go for cushions since I typically find that they're quite mattifying, but maybe I'll give the Hera UV Ultra moisture cushion compact a shot (if I can find it)! Definitely putting Too faced Born this way foundation on my cart to try since it seems like a lot of people are recommending it! 🙂

Re: Foundation recommendations! Dry/Combo Skin

I hear ya on the cushion compacts, @kyching.  The first one I tried was very mattifying - my dry skin was not at all happy with me. More brands are making cushion compacts, with more moisturizing versions as well as better color range.

I hope the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation works for you - it contains coconut water and hyaluronic acid, both of which are great for dry skin.
