Do you continue using your foundation past the expiration date?

My question applies to foundations with sunscreen that must have the expiration date printed on the packaging.

I normally throw mine out, but do any of you still use it past the date?

I've heard/read mixed reviews on it..  if the foundation is past the date, the sunscreen is not as effective anymore (I don't rely on the spf in the foundation since I use a separate one).

What if it's past the expiration date but there's no weird smell or changes in color, pigments, texture, etc...? Do you still use it?

@mmmiu I have never not used mine before the expiration date.  If products have a date on it and I know how long it has been opened for and doesn't smell off I would use it a little past expiration.

I’d probably keep right on using it as long as it hasn’t separated or doesn’t smell weird. I don’t rely on my foundation for SPF.

I only have two foundations. I usually finish it before it expires. If theres no smell or changes I would probably use it.

I try and keep all my makeup/skin care very clean. Wipe down foundation stick and tip of foundation bottle. I store it in a dark cool space. I find this prolongs the shelf life as my sister uses the same brand but hers always end up smelling awful and has to be tossed even thought mine is older.

@mmmiu The spf loses effectiveness, but since you use a separate spf, as long as the foundation smell and texture doesn't change, it's fine!

The only expiration dates I pay attention to are mascaras (unless I'm determined to disinfect the want after every use)

@mmmiu I would second that I have literally never looked at the expiration date. Definitely I would assume SPF is lacking, if it had some antioxidant benefit it can be assumed that's gone too, but if it's not separated, weird smelling, or not working how I expect then it's fine IMO

Re: Do you continue using your foundation past the expiration date?

I pretty much ignore expiration dates on my makeup. As long as it looks/performs/smells the same I assume it's fine and nothing bad has happened yet. I do agree if there is spf I assume it's not working anymore, but I do not use foundation as my sole source of spf anyway because the likeliness of using enough to be effective is very small.

Good to know! So i wouldn't be completely crazy to keep it just a few more months if it hasn't changed in texture or smell 🙂
