Re: Melasma treatment

@Anonymous

I recently saw a derm about this issue. First off sunscreen daily. The derm I saw recommended mineral sunscreen as it physically blocks harmful rays. At least 30 spf. I had a laser treatment a which did help but it’s not guaranteed to help and could make it worse depending on your skin type, color and pigmentation. The derm prescribed a scream that had hydro quinolone retinol and Kojic acid. You can only use hydro quinolone for a short time though and it’s not always a permanent fix. I would start incorporating ingredients that have been shown to help block formation of pigment/ melanin. Tranexamic acid, alpha Arbutin, vit c , retinol are all good ingredients that can help. I use vit c 4-5 mornings a week. A good leave on exfoliant to help turn over cells. Alpha arbutin and transexamic acid serum. I use retinol most nights. Hyperpigmentation takes time to fade, it’s not always a quick fix.

RE: Melasma treatment

The ordinary Alpha Arbutin. Only at night. Do not use retinols or retinoid - they will make you more susceptible to melasma. And I’d avoid acids in the day, including anything with vitamin c. Avoid any product with avobenzone or oxybenzone like the plague. They both exacerbate melasma.

Hi @Shergill!

I would start with wearing sunscreen everyday. Have you tried retinoids? Something like DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni™ Retinol Creammight be worth a try.

If the stuff you can buy in stores doesn’t work well, you might go to a dermatologist. Prescription strength retinoids, like retin-a/tretinoin, might be even more effective. Unfortunately it just takes a bit of time for the skin to turn over. Good luck!
