Faulty gift card

I was gifted a gift card but the numbers scratched off while I tried to scratch it. It won’t scan in store and customers service says they can’t help me. Walmart said they can’t do anything either. Anyone know what I can do? It’s not my fault it’s faulty, seems to be common with gift card. So they just steal my money?
