Bag charge??

Seriously Sephora? I just spent a small fortune and you want to charge me 5 cents for a bag??? So wrong. Literally nickle and diming your consumers. Going elsewhere.

@julcho not sure where you are, but that’s Not a corporate decision. It’s usually implemented based on where you live. I’m in Canada and even grocery stores and pharmacies will charge 5cents a bag. I believe it’s in the interest of the environment and to promote less waste/using your own bag. It’s not something Sephora is doing, they have to by law most likely

The price of a bag is already incorporated into the price of the product you buy .. but the price of the item hasn’t dropped even though you are not provided with a carry bag

Ah, got it. That makes sense. Still, it be nice to know if the proceeds from the bag tax are being donated by Sephora for environmental causes or if the are pocketing all of the proceeds. If they are keeping the cash that seems like corporate greed at its best. Less bags, more money under the guise of doing a noble act. How about reuseble cloth bags and a 5 cent incentive for customers who bring them in for reuse. They have ridiculous packaging that needs a complete overhaul with the environment in mind. Being “forced” to comply with an ordinance that makes you money doesn’t seem all the altruistic to me. What say you Sephora?

It takes away from the “Sephora experience” if I’m spending $100 I have an expectation that the store will wrap my items and put in a bag free of charge

if Sephora was so environmentally friendly why do they keep doing gift sets in mini boxes with scrunched up paper?  

Sephora should offer comp carry bag when we spend over $100

The bag charge is a local tax enacted by the local government. Sephora doesn't adjust prices based on differences in local sales taxes, so why would they do so for this one? And considering that bag costs them a nickel, maaayyybe a dime, to begin with, there's not much to adjust anyways. 

This was never about how environmentally friendly Sephora or any other retailer is claiming to be...it's a law enacted by certain municipalities. While excess packaging is a valid concern, it doesn't relate to this particular tax at all.

@wendywoowoo as others have mentioned this is likely a tax where the municipality has issued a bylaw requiring stores to charge. The tax would then go to the municipality.

Bag taxes are paid to the municipality that instituted the tax...it is designed to raise money for the local government. Sephora doesn't keep it.

@julcho It's a tax so it goes directly to the government. Sephora does't get to decide what happens to it.

@julcho - it is most likely a government-mandated bag fee.  See if you shop elsewhere in the same city and if they also charge a bag fee. 5 cents isn’t bad - where I live, it’s between 10 and 25 cents (crossing city lines will have different fees).

It looks like it might be due to your city ordinances.
