Cream Blush Pro and Cons

Hey, I was wondering what the difference between a cream and powder blush is (other then the obvious!)? What do you prefer and why? I've always used powder blush but as my skin has become drier, I'm thinking of switching to cream?

Is the colour payoff similar? What product/brand would you recommend? Can you use lipsticks as a blush?

Thanks, hope everyone is enjoying the sale!

RE: Cream Blush Pro and Cons

Hi. As far as pigmentation, I think it depends on the brand. I have been experimenting and loving Bite’s multi-sticks. I love blending their colors together and using them as blush. They are creamy with wonderful pigmentation and easily blendable and buildable. Hope that helps!

Re: Cream Blush Pro and Cons

@Aaliaa I am a blush JUNKIE. Cream, powder, gel, tint, liquid, stain, love them all 🙂 I find that the blush formula I reach for depends on the season and what my base is that day. Summer time, when I've got almost no base except for sunscreen, I love my liquid and gel/cream blushes since they go on so effortlessly and it's possible to use just my fingers. Also, if I mess up and use too much, I can wipe off and start over without ruining anything underneath. Liquids and gels usually set on their own, if I'm using a cream, I'll sometimes set with a very light dust of finishing powder. My favorite non-powder blushes are the Glossier Cloud Paints, Stila Aqua Glow Watercolors, and the Nars multisticks (the newer formulation).

Once I start wearing more base, I prefer powders because I personally have more control applying powders with brushes over creams. If I've got an important or super long event, I'll layer cream and powder blushes for ultimate lasting power, but I tend to favor just powders above all else. Nars, Hourglass, Natasha Denona are some of my favorites.

I will note that if you have drier skin, you might want to moisturize or look for a more hydrating primer before applying. Oddly enough, I find cream blushes exaggerate the look of my dry skin, especially in the winter when everything is all chapped.

Re: Cream Blush Pro and Cons

Cream blushes are great for longevity, but not the best for blending. It is easy to overblend and end up with an entire flushed cheek (maybe only me 🙂 ).

Bobbi Brown cream blushes are amazing. The pigmentation is great. I always receive compliments when I use Blushed Rose. Also, you can definitely use lipstick as blush! It is essentially the same thing since some cream blushes are marketed as lip and cheek.

My skin has also gotten drier as I've gotten older yet I still use powders. I tried creams but I feel like it's so much easier to blend with powders. I've been using tarte blushes which feel a little more hydrating than the powders I've used before.

Like @EspialEyes, I prefer cream blushes.  I have combination-dry skin (dry cheeks) and find that cream blushes are easier for me to apply and build up the color, as desired.

You can definitely use lipstick as blush.  In fact, my favorite cream blushes are the Stila Convertible Color products - 2-in-1 cream for lips and cheeks.  They have a good selection of shades, and a palette with several of their popular shades.  I also like the Tarte Cheek Stains - I don't know if Sephora sells the individual cheek stains, but there's a palette currently for sale on the Sephora site.

I prefer cream blush, I find it easier to apply, blend and not over do it. The pigment might not seem as strong as powder but it definitely shows in a softer more natural way.
