Purging

I started using the Ordinary Glycolic toner and the AHA 30% BHA 2% peeling solution and I started getting cystic pimples. I have read that when you use these acids (was reading glycolic acid in particular), your skin will start purging and that I shouldn’t stop using. Is this really normal? How long is the “purging stage”? Anything I should do?

@Kringles  Are you new to acids? TO does state the peeling solution isn't for beginners nor sensitive skin, as it's strong.

How long have you been using both? Did you start using both at the same time? Are they used one after the other?

I am ☹️I started using 3 or 4 weeks ago I think. I did start using both at the same time but not daily. I noticed one or two cysts when I started using and then it got worse last week. Last week is when I started using the glycolic acid daily and started using the other one for more than 3mins. I used to just use the BHA peel for 3mins once a week and the other day I left it on for 6mins and it’s the second time for the week. I also never use them together.

Purging can definitely happen if you're new to acids, @Kringles. Generally speaking, purging will occur in areas where you're susceptible to acne anyway and lasts 1-3 weeks. You can use calming serums and moisturizers to help heal your skin while you're breaking out. That said, if it lasts longer or you don't normally break out, then what you're experiencing could be a reaction to the products rather than a purge.

I think this is my 3rd or 4th week on it, but I only started using it daily last week. I had one or two cysts for the past weeks when I started using and now it’s gotten worse. But you were spot on with it just being on the area I usually get acne. Do you have recommendations on calming serums?
