The Color IQ skin tone scan or online Shade Finder can be helpful - there are times when they've been spot on and other times, not as close. Sometimes, the best matches I've found have come from the Community. Please share the foundations and concealer shades that work well for you.
So I've amassed quite a collection of foundations and will do my best to explain how I got to my top two foundations and concealers below. First, the full round up of foundations:
Top Left to Right: 1) NARS Sheer Glow Foundation Gobi 2) Iconic London Radiance Complexion Booster in Shell Glow 3) HUDA BEAUTY Easy Blur Natural Airbrush Foundation with Niacinamide in Cashew 4) Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Perfect Glow Flawless Oil-Free Foundation 2 (5) Iconic London Super Smoother Blurring Skin Tint Warm Fair (6) PATRICK TA Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Skin Perfecting Foundation For Natural Glow in 4 (6) #Danessa Myricks Skin Soothing Tint in 2 (7) Jones Road What the Foundation in Porcelain
Bottom Left to Right (8) ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare Foundation in Balos (9) Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter in 3 (10) #Fenty Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth in 2 (11) #NARS Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation in Mont Blanc and Oslo, (12) Westman Atelier Vital Skin Full Coverage Multi-Use Foundation Stick Atelier I (13) HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation with Fermented Arnica 130 Light... and (14) Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick in 3. And in the front of the two rows: Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Brightening Concealer With Hyaluronic Acid Atelier L1 .
Phew.
Now factors specific to me and what's important to me: I have Dry, Sensitive, Red Prone Over 40's Skin and prefer lighter weight foundation I can blend easily with my fingers or buff out with a foundation brush quickly if need be.
Drumroll...
Foundations that caused breakouts or irritation on my sensitive skin: I love both the Charlotte Tilbury products but they didn't work for me - definitely the glowiest of the bunch. I was very excited about Haus Labs Foundation and it was a great match for me but my eyes watered and skin felt irritated wearing it. And sadly as I love it and think it is a great product for so many people, ditto on the Danessa Myricks which caused me cysts.
Foundations I like but didn't color match: All the Nars. I use their tinted moisturizer at times in the lightest shade but can never find a color match in their foundations though I do prefer the Sheer Glow to the Light Reflecting formula.
Foundations I think are great but I don't typically reach as I prefer somethiing less heavy : Iconic London's Radiance Formula, Jones Road What the Foundation - both great foundations I'm just going a little less luminous since summer and tend to save the Jones Road for Winter.
Foundations that don't work well or are hard to blend on my skin type: Illia Serum, Fenty Eaze Drop Stick and Huda Eaze Blur
My Possible New Favorite: Patrick Ta. I can't decide if I got the right shade but this stuff is definitely the most promising of the newer skin care based foundations I've tried. Following @itsfi 's advice I apply with fingers and then blend with a damp beauty blender. I have found it has a lovely finish and is longwearing.
So What Are My Go To's?
Two concealers and two foundations, top to bottom: Fenty Beauty by Rihanna We're Even Hydrating Longwear Waterproof Concealer in 110, Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Brightening Concealer With Hyaluronic Acid Atelier L1 , Iconic London Super Smoother Blurring Skin Tint Warm Fair and Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Perfect Glow Flawless Oil-Free Foundation 2 .
Of these two concealers, I'd probably pick the Westman Atelier - it has a lovely, blendable texture. I often reach for the Fenty though when I need more brightness.
Iconic London has been the one skin tint that best matches my skin tone, blends easily and quickly with fingertips and doesn't highlight dry patches or sink into pores or break me out (it is also lovely with their blurring primer).
And of course, Armani - I was initially drawn to this b/c they had a peach shade which can be hard to find but found it truly lives up to the hype when I'm being less casual and want a little more coverage.
Time to take the trash out now, lol. Please feel free to ask any questions about any of the products I've used - they may not all be for me but many are fantastic for others with a lot going for them.
I enjoyed this read immensely @PDXXXX! 💗 Love seeing all your foundations lined up too - beautiful.
That Patrick Ta foundation is a challenging one to match, at least for me. I feel like I've tried 6 shades so far. I *think* I've found a good match in 9, but I'm going to give it a few more tries over a few more weekends, and also compare it again to 10 - I have this feeling that if I blended the two, that would match best.
Ahhhh, Armani LSF. I love that foundation. I will mix it with a drop of face oil to thin it out (and get in an extra boost of moisture for my skin) if I don't want as much coverage from it.
Ouch, sorry to hear about the Danessa Myricks. It wasn't bad for me but I prefer the Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation.
@itsfi Thank you! Yes, I am finding the Patrick Ta shade match difficult as well and debating whether I want to try another shade but feeling the current one I have may work as my skin is losing it's summer color. I do feel it's very promising, unique and love the thinner consistency - I hope you find a darned match! I really appreciate the tip on considering adding a drop of facial oil to the Armani to sheer it out at times. It's fun when you get suggestions that could make an already phenomenal product even more versatile and I do love lighter weight options. I'm excited to try that 🙂
It took me forever to finally take a look at all foundations in my drawer to decide which ones are a good match. I alwasy find it hard to match foundation but recently I discovered a couple that are almost perfect match and then there are some that can work with adjusting shade of powder on top and some that can be mixed together to get a match so bear with me for this wild ride.
Perfect Matches:
- Estee Lauder Doublewear shade 3W1.5
- Urban Decay Face Bond. 15 Light Medium Warm ( point to note the shade runs darker for it's name and is actually medium instead of light medium)
- Merit Foundation Stick Sand
The ones that arent exact match but still work well are
- Iconic London super smoother skin tint Warm Medium
- It Cosmetics CC Creams Neutral Medium
- Nars tinted moisturizer. St Moritz
- Mac Pro Long wear NC40
- Trinny London. BFF Serum. Binky
- Nars Natural Radiant Stromboli
- Chanel Water fresh tint B40 (summer shade)
The two that I mix together to get a good match, these are different brands but consistency is same so I have no trouble mixing them.
- Dior backstage face & Body 3W0 ( it is dark on it's own)
- Pat Mc Grath Light medium 10 (it is light on it's own)
One of these days I will get around rounding all the concealers and analyzing them and come back to share.
Your foundation collection is full of so many beautiful products @fatimamummy! 😍 I love that you shared the shades you mix for a good (and custom) match. I’ve been mixing foundation and some bronzing drops this summer for better matches. Far easier on the wallet than picking up another shade, though I do have a few foundations where I have multiple shades. 😆
This is such a wonderful and helpful idea for a thread @itsfi
My first foundation ever was the L’Oréal Foundation in Light Nuetral, when I look back on it I used it as a concealer. The Sephora skin quiz and learning about makeup and application from everyone in the community has really been exciting!
I started with Rare Beauty Foundation Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation 130N which actually is what led me to find this awesome community

Those insider challenges really came in handy when finding the match I’m so glad I took the quiz
I was able to locate a couple matches on the app but for some reason I can’t pull it up now.
Set On Next
I feel very confident in the matches, I think I will make it a goal to go in store and swatch some matches I think it would be neat to test out the feel and look of different matches

I love hearing how people find their way to this Community @peculiarzmakeup! 🥰 I have that Rare Beauty foundation … or, I think I do. 🤔 I’m finding that reading about everyone’s foundation matches has been jogging my memory that I have the foundation or it’s one I want to try. That last piece is definitely dangerous!
I appreciate you reading 🙂 and yes it feels like yesterday, I appreciate it here so much, I can relate so much to the jogging memory like
-I had that in the past it was so good
-I’ve wanted to try that forever
It’s definatley influential! And yes agreed 🫠 @itsfi
Here are all the foundation/base products & concealers I currently have, with swatches! Some of them I actually haven't tried yet, but swatched them anyway in case it's helpful to someone.
For reference, I have fair skin (Fitzpatrick Type 1 - always burns, never tans 😅) with mostly neutral/peachy undertones. However, I can usually get away with using complexion products with cooler/pinkish undertones, but not warm/yellow undertones.
Skin tints/tinted moisturizers/BB cream/CC cream/foundation (I tried to swatch them in approximate order of least to most coverage):
Sorry about my chicken scratch 😅
1.Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint for Dewy Sheer Coverage G12
2. Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer 10N (can't tag this atm)
3.Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Huez Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum Mineral Spf 30 Sunscreen 1
4.bareMinerals COMPLEXION RESCUE™ Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF 30 Opal 01
5. Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream No. 13 Bright Beige (also sometimes listed as Milky Beige)
7.Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation for Buildable Coverage Very Light 2
8.Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Soft’Lit Naturally Luminous Hydrating Longwear Foundation 125
Concealers (these are in no particular order):
1. e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer Fair Rose
2. e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer Fair Beige
3. e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer Fair Warm
4. Urban Decay Quickie 24HR Full-Coverage Waterproof Concealer 10CP
5. Urban Decay Quickie 24HR Full-Coverage Waterproof Concealer 10NN
6. Glossier Stretch Concealer G12 (discontinued)
7. Glossier Stretch Concealer for Dewy Buildable Coverage Very Light 2
8. Tarte Shape Tape Ultra Creamy Concealer 8B Porcelain Beige
9. Too Faced Born This Way Ethereal Light Illuminating Smoothing Concealer Sugar
10. CoverGirl Clean Fresh Hydrating Concealer 310 Porcelain
Some notes on the concealers - I haven't tried the Urban Decay, Too Faced or CoverGirl yet (apart from swatching). For medium coverage, I like the Glossier, and for full coverage I like the Natasha Denona & e.l.f. The e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer in shade Fair Warm is too warm/yellow toned for me, so that one will probably get decluttered. The ND Hy-Glam is probably my favorite formula so far, but I find shade RN1 to be a little *too* pale, at least for my dark circles, though it works well elsewhere. I am planning to pick up shade NATASHA DENONA Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Medium to Full Coverage Crease Proof Serum Concealer ... to see if that will work better under my eyes.
Hope this is helpful! 💜
P. S. Pls excuse the scratches on my arm, my kitty needs a nail trim 😅
The way you organized this is just beautiful and so well thought out, it’s very helpful to to put things in perspective. Amazing swatches! A list is such a great idea too! I appreciate you sharing this 🙂 @caitbird
@peculiarzmakeup thank you so much, I'm glad you found it helpful!
Ahhhh, what a fantastic post @caitbird! I love your swatches 😍
Great way of noting the swatches on that cute strawberry stationary. 👍 Your collection of skin tints / foundations is gorgeous!
@itsfi thank you so much! 💜 I actually initially was writing down what I was swatching for my own reference to make this post, but then I thought I might as well include the list in the pictures. Hopefully my scrawl is semi-readable 😅 I love all things strawberries 🍓, so when I found this notepad at TJ Maxx I couldn't resist!
Your “scrawl” is not only readable but beautiful @caitbird! Appreciate the time you took to do this. Thank you, thank you! 💞
@itsfi I have no idea lol. I can't seem to find a good match, I'll stick with tinted stuff.
@Samtian, definitely been there. Out of curiosity, what tints do you like / use, or like to use?
MAC Studio Fix NC35 foundation and concealer are my ride or die. The mineralize powder in the shade matches too.
Other good matches
Estee Lauder Double Wear liquid - 3W1 Tawny
Nars Stromboli or Barcelona (when I have a tan)
Fenty Soft Matte 240 Warm
@eshores, MAC Studio Fix is a classic! 💗 I haven’t tried the concealer but it’s great to hear it’s a hit for you. NARS makes some wonderful foundations too - do you have a favorite among their foundations?
@itsfi As promised here are the foundations and concealers that I brought with me to RV camp. I am a fair/light complexion with cool to neutral undertones.

@Cissy63, you have some marvelous beauties with you! 😍 The Dior foundation and Lancôme and NARS concealers are fabulous. 💕
How’s the ONE/SIZE foundation for you? Their setting sprays and primers have performed really well for me and I’m slowly trying other items from
the brand - slowly because I’m trying to be extra good about not picking up so many things. “Trying” is really the operative word here. 😝
I hope you are having an amazing time on your trip!
