What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@CynthieLu, they've done a phenomenal job growing their business - their products are fabulous, they have great marketing and good business strategies. I like the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Jelly Sheet Mask 1.17 oz/ 33 g - it's always been one of the hydrogel masks that I prefer. This one stayed on my face better than the previous version. I included more detail on the It's Tool Time - The BIC Beauty Edition thread, including a Mini Review - Glow Recipe Watermelon Sheet Mask (2024)
Very sorry for the delay in posting my thoughts. I was trying to find one of my older posts on the mask, to see if I could find the ingredients list from that version. I went through 300 pages of post and found the last time I used the mask - my last one of the older version (probably a little outdated, eek!) but sadly I did not take a photo of the INCI list on that mask. Sigh. In any event, the deep and brief version - the sheet mask makes a lovely treat - for yourself or someone else, or both. Worth picking up. Something to note - Glow Recipe kept the price the same - no increase even though some time has passed since the mask was first released.
"How Low Can I Go?" Makeup Capsule
This is definitely *not* showcasing low price, but more modest on number of items included at 8 total.
What's inside 🎀
Everything fit really well with lots of space in an old Elisabeth Arden clutch makeup bag.
Gorgeous collection! I love this approach. Beautiful photo and product selection. I love the fit it is such a nice holder for these! I’m so impressed and inspired I think it’s so neat to narrow down. I feel like this would be so beneficial for light travel or so many on the go occasions! What was helpful for you in your considerations? So neat and very well thought out 💕 excellent job! @CynthieLu
This is a nice capsule @CynthieLu - minimal in terms of number of items but you can maximize how each product is used, especially that Hourglass palette. 😍 I have a mini of the DM balm too - it's adorable. Do you apply it with your fingers? A brush?
Love the use of the clutch and the lux. It's so hard to go low 😭😂, how did you narrow it down? @CynthieLu
This one was an easy one to put together, this is my essential no fuss face. @danielledanielle Enough to do a no makeup-makeup look, or just something a little minamilist. I can use some of these products creatively to create shadows or liners but I might have to relook to see if they are safe for those parts of the face before I try. 🤔
I think it might even fall into a fast and furious 6 routine.... But with 8 🙈
@CynthieLu @danielledanielle, I see 6 🔍 by my count, right on track with a Sephora 6 theme - 6 brands. 😉 Or, Tatcha is skincare and the Benefit is a duo and counts as 1, so ... again, 6.
Week 43: Global Capsule, kinda minimal 🤷🏽♀️
I tried to make it minimal by keeping to 20 products or less. I got it to 23? 🤷🏽♀️
Also, definitely had to think on this, because what non-US brands do I have 🤔 So, I focused on lips first.."Lands of Lips"
Dior - France
Prada - Italy
Canmake - Japan
Rom&nd - Korea
Fashion Fair - US
Then I thought, what else? I originally had Danessa Myricks Beauty Groundwork: Defining Neutrals - Palette For Eyes, Brows, Face & Lips (again), but then I went back to Hindash! Made in Dubai! Plus Heroline liner and
And then there's Becca 🥲, desperately trying to finish this foundation...🤣 And since it's sunset blush week (Fall Foliage ) in the cheek challenge, that means Becca blush and highlighter time! Also RMS... So Aussie and Canada represent.
This was minimal enough to actually fit in one bag
😦🙌🏽
But, I like keeping a little bag for lips and that's an ipsy bag from a March a year (or 2??) ago for international Women's Day.
Amazing capsule! Loved reading about the lip products and origins! This is so neat! Such a fun bag I love all the pops of color. This is so inspiring it’s so fun to learn new things about products and really assess all areas. Fantastic! Beautiful photos too! @danielledanielle
Ooh now that's a very sweet bag @danielledanielle 💝
Ahhh, and so many products from so many places, you did great on the worldly theme this week. I think it all fitting in your bag is proof you hit your minimalist targets too. 👍
I love your kinda minimal makeup trip around the world capsule @danielledanielle!! 😍 23 rounds down to 20 (it does!! I've been helping with homework for the last month, so I know - yes, that is how I know it rounds down to 20 🤣) - brava! You hit your goal of 20 products or less. 🙌
Ahhhh, Hindlash!! I have a couple of palettes from them that I'm sure are in need of attention. Hmmm... your capsule is making me consider a third capsule this week. LOL.
Yeah, I feel like the hype died too quickly on these @itsfi . I think I have the pastel one, Monochromance, but I waffle on keeping it... It's somewhere. But, Beautopsy is my jam. It's a lot of fun to use.
Beautopsy, that's the one I have. Yeah, "somewhere" - that's a good way to describe where mine is as well, @danielledanielle. It's got some great colors for fall.
Incredibly inspiring! I love the thought of 6 products It’s such a neat way of assessing which aspects of need are important at the time as far as makeup needs! Love this challenge I feel this would be also great for the Sephora Six - Fast & Furious Edition
Checklist
Inspired ✔️
Love the fit as well such a beautiful bag
amazing job! @itsfi
@peculiarzmakeup, thank you! I’m all for quick and easy makeup. 👍🏼 I try (though don’t always sicceed) to mix up my capsule sizes - some weeks a more minimalist mix of products and other weeks more variety and options. Or something in between. It’s been fun to experiment and to see what I lean to most of the time.
This is incredibly impressive @itsfi I have that bag, it's not very big. ( thou very soft and plush 💖) You fitting an entire capsule inside is kinda a big deal, I'm amazed right now. That has to feel like an accomplishment. 🪄🎩
Thanks @CynthieLu. This challenge has certainly sharpened my Tetris-skills when it comes to makeup products. 😅
Impressive fit @itsfi and I love the picks, especially that one size mini
Onward with shadonzer!
I may piggyback on your idea to do a minimal 🤷🏽♀️, well my version of minimal capsule
@danielledanielle, I contemplated putting the jumbo size of the ONE/Size on my list for the holiday savings event, but alas, that will be a lot more than I need, as I have a couple of mini's and a regular full size already. It's a good setting spray; a little drying on my skin but I can work around that with a good skincare prep and my Gucci Brume de Beauté Beauty Mist 2.7 oz / 80 mL to refresh and rehydrate over the course of the day.
Sephora Savings Event – Holiday 2024 Shopping Advice Thread: What’s in Your Basket?
Makeup I’m thankful for!
ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Jumbo On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray cause it ensures everything stays put even when it’s raining!
Hanni Shave Pillow Moisturizing Body Gel 3 oz / 88 mL cause it saves me so much time and the hassle of getting all wet if I need to shave last minute. Plus it’s highly moisturizing.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil Longwear Lip Liner because it is so darn reliable and is multi use as an eyeliner with a little disinfecting;)
tarte tartelette™ tubing mascara Black because it’s so super black! I like to press it into the skin between my lashes as a tightlining cheat.
DIOR Dior Forever Couture Luminizer Highlighter Powder cause I reach for it more than any other highlighter. it’s easy and blends and builds like a dream.
