Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge 2024

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 52 (December 23 - December 29) - The Holiday Glam Makeup Capsule and/or  The "2024 Makeup Capsule Collection" Makeup Capsule - Some options for us to close out the makeup capsules for 2024 (or to kick start 2025)!

Show us the beauties you use when you want to add glitz and glam (or, that up the glitz and glam element) to your makeup look.

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@sister13 what a great pic!! I love your necklace too 😍😍

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you! It’s a big necklace but helps jazz up an outfit! @cianni

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Awww, this brings back the memories @sister13 ❣️

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I know, so amazing and I hope we get to do it again this year! PS, I will try to join in the fun of the capsule thread but haven’t had time to keep up with anything in my life these days, lol! 💗💗💗 @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I hope we can all do it again this year @sister13, with others joining in as well. 💗

I get it sister13 - I dunno what happened but keeping up takes a lot more effort these days and I can't even say I'm caught up. 😆 I'm in the same boat - I have a lot of catching up to do on threads here and a list of ones I've been meaning to post to.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I’m super behind, so before i add in my products for this week, I’ll do a quick recap of my week 5 (favourites week. I gave a few products used this month a second chance to see if they were really worth keeping. I mainly focused on:

I cycled in some favourites from other capsules to fill in the blanks, like the Rimmel lip liner in 90s nude, NYX Shine Loud Lipstick in Cali, Touch in Sol No Pore-blem Primer, LAWLESS Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Smoothing Gloss and Buxom Power Line™ Plumping Lip Liner Hush Hush Henna

Hits - I knew i liked the BIte gloss, it’s just getting a little older and i want to prioritize using it. I also really ended up liking the PF butter bronzer - however, i used it more this week mixed into moisturizer for a subtle tint/glow. It’s a little light for a bronzer for me, it just gives a subtle wash of color and glow. Speaking of moisturizer, i really did end up liking the magic water cream (as much as i was hoping I wouldn’t….). I still can’t justify the price, but would happily use it again.

Misses - The MACStack mascara was getting old, and I didn’t like it from when i first started using it. This was the last week i was using it before decluttering and moving onto something else. I ended up rotating in the Urban Decay Wild Lash (i think this has been discontinued?), because i realized i had already opened it and used it a few times, so I should finish it up before moving on. The Pacifica brow gel was something i initially enjoyed, but now I’m thinking the shade is a little dark, and the wand is hard to get precise with, especially now that its starting to dry out. It was fine, but I’m ready to part ways with it. The CoverGirl highlighter honestly is really nice, and it’s the only drugstore highlight in my collection. Highlight is just a category i tend to stay mid to high end on, and I’m really happy with my current collection. It s a nice product, but I just wont reach for it versus other things, so ive passed this on to someone who will use it and love it more.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni This is a strong reminder that I need to put some of my Bite lip products into heavy use or risk losing them.  I don't really follow a set 'toss it' schedule, but... It's been like 2 years since they've closed??

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie hahaha I’m the same way - I definitely could be better at working with expiration dates, but realistically a product either falls into two camps for me when it comes to that: “this smells off/burns/doesn’t perform” or “I think I bought/wore this for x event…. Oh wait, that was 4 years ago, not last year….”

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni, your “hits” and “misses” sections were a marvelous read - I loved getting to “see”’your thought process with the products that you were on the fence about - very informative and insightful. 💗  Your experience with the Pacifica brow gel sounded so similar to mine with several products - initially, it’s good, sometimes great even, and then, on subsequent uses, its spark fizzles and continues to do so.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi It must be the excitement of using a new product for the first time, but lately I’m finding my first impressions have been a little off! Products I initially wasn’t a fan of are now things I enjoy, and products I thought I liked are just ok 🙃 I guess that’s the point of this challenge though! A week of testing is needed to make a real assessment

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 6 - Black Founded/Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule (continued)

A quick check in about the primer and foundation combos I've been testing the last couple of days and some "About the Brand" info on the respective founder/owner of the brands I'm using for cheeks and eyes this week.

Week 6 - Base.jpg

First Impressions - LYS Beauty Primer / Uoma Beauty Foundation / Danessa Myricks Tint

Spoiler
For Monday and Tuesday, I used the LYS Beauty Secure Skin Gripping Serum Primer 1 oz/ 30 mL (sample) on just the right side of my face and no primer on the left.  I went with the Uoma Beauty foundation on Monday and Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides yesterday.

Monday - The Uoma foundation wore well on both sides of my face, lasting 10+ hours, with the side without the primer starting to fade just a little earlier than the side with the primer. The LYS primer has a tack to it, but I think that give it some grip. The LYS also added a slight luminosity to the Uoma foundation that wasn't there on the side without the primer.

Tuesday - Same deal as Monday, with the LYS primer on the right side of my face and no primer on the left. This time, I used the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin. Longevity was less than with the Uoma but that makes sense given that it's a skin tint and I was running around more the day I had on the Danessa Myricks. I was able to get about 5-6 hours before the skin tint started wearing down and disappearing around my nose.

About the Brands/Founders: Week 6 Base Products

Spoiler
Tisha Thompson spent over a decade as a beauty retail executive before creating LYS Beauty, an affordable clean beauty line (every product is under $30) with an inclusive range of shades. LYS, which stands for "love yourself", made its way to Sephora in 2021, becoming its first Black-owned clean makeup brand.

Undefined Beauty is a skincare and wellness brand, founded by Dorian Morris, in 2018, with the mission "to democratize beauty and undefine the industry with an unapologetic, uncompromising, unfiltered approach to plant-based wellness." Ms. Morris interned in advertising sales while an undergrad at UCLA before starting her retail career in Women's Fragrances in the Executive Program at Robison's May (now Macy's). She would later earn her MBA from Harvard Business School and use the business and technical skills she learned during her time at organizations such as General Mills, Kendo and CoverGirl Cosmetics in her own brand.

Uoma Beauty, founded by Nigerian born Sharon Chuter, is an inclusive beauty brand offering two collections - one focused on an all-vegan product lineup and natural ingredients; and another showcasing highly pigmented and buildable, professional grade color. Splitting her time between Los Angeles, California and London, Ms. Chuter found that the beauty industry allowed her be both creative and a business person. She started in sales and worked her way up to the C-suite before leaving to start Uoma Beauty.

Fenty Beauty, founded by Rihanna, launched in 2017 in 17 countries all at once. An unprecedented feat that, together with the profound success of the brand, lead Fenty Beauty to be named Time magazine's Best Invention of 2017.

Week 6 - Cheeks & Eyes.jpg

I've only gotten back into using cheek products more frequently this year and have been excited to give these products a try this week, along with the eye makeup. I'll share more about my experience with them (and these eye products) in my recap at the end of the week, but wanted to highlight the brands and founders of these cheek and eye products a bit more.

About the Brands/Founders - Week 6 Cheek & Eye Products

Spoiler
Pat Mcgrath is legendary. Before starting her own brand, Pat McGrath spent over 25 years as a makeup artist and during that time, collected a host of honors and awards for her phenomenal work, and continues to do so through her beauty brand. Vogue magazine hailed her "the most influential make-up artist in the world" in 2007 and she is the first make-up artist to be made a Dame Commander of the British Empire. Known for its highly pigmented and high quality products and variety of shades, Pat McGrath Labs has something to offer anyone and everyone - from those new to the world of makeup as well as the aficionados among us.

Harlem-based Diaarrha N'Diaye-Mbaye came up with Ami Cole while on a solo two-week trip to Thailand. Before starting her company, she worked in social media as well as marketing for companies such as Temptu and L'Oreal. She also worked in development and innovation for Glossier. Ami Cole, launched during the pandemic with three products, is named after the founder's mother (who emigrated to the US from Dakar, Senegal) and inspired by her Senegalese roots. The brand has been described as clean beauty for melanin-rich skin. In Ms. N'Diaye-Mbaye's words, Ami Cole "celebrates a truer version of women of color - paring it down to stand out and glow." [from "Meet The BIPOC Founder Paving The Way For Inclusive Makeup" at forbes(dot)com]

Nigeria-born Chiche Eburu created Juvia's Place in 2016, a brand known for its rich pigments, vibrant shades  and color stories, and fun & fabulous packaging, offers products fit for the darkest to fairest of skin tones, all at affordable prices, too! The brand was born out of Ms. Eburu's dissatisfaction with the lack of inclusivity in the beauty industry and her passion and desire to change it - "we are a colorful people. Our makeup should reflect the richness of our culture, our beauty, and our history." [from "How Chichi Eburu Found Success With Juvia's Place" on fashiongonerogue(dot)com]

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi The Juvias place palette looks gorgeous, and I can absolutely see those shades looking fab on you!  How are you liking the Fenty concealer?  Do I need it like... now?  Or do I need it during the sale??

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, sorry for the delay. Got back in late last night. The Taupes palette is lovely; the color story isn’t something everyone will love and she certainly has some palettes that are more fun and vibrant, but this palette definitely has my kind of shades. 😍 The shadows apply, build up and blend easily and smoothly. They stay put too, with or without a primer. I went 12+ hours without creasing with primer. Without primer, the shadow will hold on for a good stretch but my lids start showing some creasing and oiliness around the 8-9 hour mark.

Here are swatches with and without primer -

Week 6 The Taupes Swatches.jpeg

The new Fenty concealer is very nice! I wore it as an undereye concealer a couple of days this week, one day without prepping my undereye area like I normally do so that it’s well hydrated and I was happily surprised with how the Fenty held up - no caking or creasing! 😍 I have an extremely healthy amount of concealers at the moment (shocking, I know. 😆) - this is one I’d say you could wait for a sale if you have other concealers you like/love. If you’re not happy with anything in your current concealer collection though this is one I would recommend checking out. The Fenty shade I have is good for under the eyes but I’ll need a darker shade for blemishes and plan to look into another shade for that during the spring sale.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Seeing your swatches made me want this palette!!!  I know 'boring' is boring to a lot of people... to me it's wearable for 90% of my life and my prefered style of makeup on myself.  This one is still on my radar... I'll be at Ulta again this year and there's a solid chance it comes to join my stash.

I may have decided to pick up a Fenty concealer too... My idea of 'I'm just doing swatches for what to buy later' and maybe one or two BOB items.... went out the door.  Luckily the store was out of a lot of product so my 'I'll take one of these, and one of these, and one of these....' was curbed.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

looooove boring @missjeanie. Boring loves me. It makes up about 98%, maybe even 99%, of my makeup collection. 😆

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Okay... A little late with my photos but I did start with these on Monday morning.  I wasn't too sure if I was going to have enough for a full face but all I was missing was a concealer.  I actually went a little ham and my capsule is a bit more like a collection this week. I was just feeling a bit extra on Sunday night I guess.  I realized how many lip products I had to choose from when I started grabbing at PMG Lip glosses.... I thought I had like 3... nope.  I am however sad that I only had a few different brands.  Need to work on expanding that!

Spoiler
-Primer -- I'm not a big primer gal, but the DM Bluring Balm Powder is a product that I just can't figure out so I thought I'd toss it in here to see if I could get a handle on how to use it.
-Foundation -- The Uoma is a new one that I haven't cracked into yet, so I added the Fenty as a backup in case it wasn't a good shade or formula for me.  I'm headed away this weekend so I need to have some products I know I can rely on to bring with me... just in case.
-Colour Corrector -- The Fenty isn't my absolute fave... I wish it had a doe foot for application.  Formula is okay, but not amazing for me.
-Powder -- The PMG Bluring Undereye Powder... isn't my fav for under eye but looks great all over for me.  I'm actually through a lot of the pan on this one and it's a good one to travel with size wise so I'm happy to put it to use.  I'm actually hoping I can empty this out this year since it's looking pretty close as is!
-Shadow Primer -- PMG Intensifeyes is a newer to me formula I only cracked into in December.  It's nice so far... but not quite as long wear as my nars.  Happy to use it though, it's the second best formula I've tried over the years.
-Mascara -- I had a baby size of the Fenty that I've had stashed away.  I still have two other mascaras open so I didn't want to open a full size from a different brand just yet.  This mini is going to be perfect for travel makeup bag.

Spoiler
-Blush -- I had this Fenty ... that looked untouched.  I love this shade.  Why didn't I get into this one yet?  Some would say I have too many blush, I would say that it was just waiting for this week to shine.  The LYS formula isn't my favourite.  I like the shades, I just find they don't last very long on me.  Gonna try to give this one some love this week.
-Bronzer -- Easy choice for me.  The Fenty Cream formula is so easy to use and blend.  The shade doesn't look orange on me at all and I could easily live with just this bronzer in my life.  It's one of those that makes me want to bronze even though I don't bronze often.
-Shadows -- So the two PMG paletes were ones that I'm going to use during the week.  I love a pink tone but I'm trying to use more taupes of late as well (I got into a pink rhythm last year and kinda forgot about other shades, trying to show taupes some love this year).  These were bigger palettes than I wanted to travel with so I picked the Fenty 9 Wine as an easy to pack palette that still gives me some pink AND taupe.

Spoiler
All the lips
-PMG Lip Balm in Love Supreme is a great one to toss on without a mirror.  I like the formula and think I may toss this onto my desk at work after this week to use up over the next however long.
-PMG Luxetrance in Wrecked is a deep berry shade that I'm loving right now.
-Mac (Okay I know this isn't a black owned brand, however this shade is the Viva Glam with Taraji P Henson so I'm giving it a ticket in as a Black influenced shade?) I just love this type of shade right now and wanted to see if I prefer the Mac or the PMG Wrecked formula wise.
-Fenty Cream Gloss Bomb -- So while I think the formula on these is fine, it's never wow'd me.  I have two shades and like them well enough, but others seem to really LOVE them... time to try the formula again and maybe I'll fall in love this week.
-Fenty Lip stain in Berry Banger... ya... the berry shades... I'm having a love affair with berries this Valentines.
-PMG lipgloss in Heavy Petal -- I though this would be a good shade choice to go brighter and lighter than the darker berries I was picking out.
-Ami Cole gloss in Romance -- This is a WINNER... I love the formula, the shade is a perfect balance between pigment and sheerness.  This gloss is already in the running for lip product of the year.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie Wonderful line up. I have the same Fenty Colour correcter. I have not reached for it much after purchasing. Your lippie choices look beautiful.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185 While I don't mind the Fenty corrector formula... I'm finding the applicator is just... not it.  Always a messy application it seems. I'd be curious to hear what you think about it after you get a chance to use it more!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Ami Colé Hydrating Lip Treatment Oil! Romance & Smitten are my two favorite shades - they also look fabulous blended together!

What shade is that Fenty bronzer?

"I am however sad that I only had a few different brands.  Need to work on expanding that!" Now, THAT sounds like a fun project!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Smitten had my heart until Romance danced right into my life.   And now I need to try them blended!

I realized I have plenty of Fenty (Bronzer in the shade Butta Biscuit, the perfect light, non orange shade), Pat McGrath and Danessa Myricks, but reading through your list above of different brands... I should expand into some new ones.  I've had my eye on a palette from Coloured Raine for literal years, but it's not easy to see in person.   That said... a quick jump over shows.... it's on sale.  I've also heard lots of love for Juvias Place.  How do you enjoy their formulas?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie That’s exactly how it happened for me - literally became smitten with Smitten, and then Romance came along. 😉 Neither are colors that on their own I instinctively go for - they’re bolder pinks and reds but I love ‘em. The shades together are 😘 for me!
