Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Well here is what I have left in my Project Pan 2024!

I started with these products:

IMG_3301.jpeg

IMG_3302.jpeg

IMG_3303.jpeg

IMG_3306.jpeg

I finished both the Caldale, both Farmacy cleansing balms, Avene eye cream, and all of the foils.  I had to dispose of the StriVectan eye cream as it was pilling on my skin. And I used most of Saie skin tint, but my skin was too shiny.  I disposed of it.

This is left:

IMG_4020.jpeg

I tried to get the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar angle so the little details could be seen.

IMG_4018.jpeg

I made progress on the JVN hair product but not Tresor fragrance.  I just didn’t use it much

IMG_4021.jpeg

I used the Born To Run palette but it’s too dry now.  I’m going to keep it as I did enjoy it a lot when it came out.  At least for as long as I have room for it.
I am letting go of the Tarte Sea face powder.  I have used most of it.  Plus I have other powders that I want to use.  I’m going to continue with the JVN hair product and the Tresor fragrance.  I’m going to set aside the Tarte blush as I have new products I want to use.  I will continue with the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar and the Makeup By Mario Skin Enhancer. And I want to finish the Tatcha face mask this year!

But I will be choosing other options to add to 2025 Project Pan.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The 2025 Thread is now live: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

Hope to see you all there 🧡

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Some snapshots of my 2024 Pan that Palette:

phonto.jpeg

January 2024 - Didn’t know which palette I’d select so I took a group photo 😅

phonto.jpeg

March 2024 - In a good groove with this ND palette. Loved that taupe shade.

phonto.jpeg

September 2024 - Lots of changes by this point. This palette gained a lot of travel miles from Italy to LA and back to the East Coast. That beautiful emerald/aqua shimmer shade is stunning in the pan but getting it on the eye was a CHORE! Was so excited to see pan finally. The lime green shimmer was also a bit of a bust. Lots of shimmer and only worked with finger application.

phonto.jpeg

October 2024 - Bigger pan on the emerald shade. The green was also getting more use as a base color.

phonto.jpeg

January 2025 - Here’s where I ultimately ended. I started mixing the brown with another shade for my eyebrows. Pretty sure the lime green is close to pan but because I apply it with my finger the shade’s been packed down.

Final Thoughts - Pretty palette but not as user friendly as I’d like. This was pretty easy to travel with but I needed other palettes for my crease and or to layer the thin shades more.

Bonus:

I received this during a Holiday Gift exchange several years ago (2016 maybe?) and it’s come such a long way.  This is not part of an official project but it’s cool to see how this has been used over the years.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@ElleElleG nice work! I'm a huge fan of Natasha Denona palettes and I agree, those mini's are perfect for travel. Italy is on my bucket list to travel to.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@ElleElleG  Such impressive work 😊.  And the ND palette did you so well ❤️

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Aww thanks @Cissy63 !!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@ElleElleG Ooh incredible work! And going to Italy what a dream! @itsfi I thought Viseart as well!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thank you @Samtian ! Italy was a lot of fun, definitely plan to return in the near future.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Your palette panning is inspiring @ElleElleG! Loving the Pan That Palette photo and the pics of your progress with them in 2024. 😍  Ohhhh, that Viseart palette (I think it's Viseart) - look at you!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thanks @itsfi !! And yes, it is the Viseart Neutral Mattes eyeshadow palette. I just noticed that it's no longer on the Sephora website 😯. Never imagined I would have used it up this much 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Idk about anyone else, but I’m quite glad to be in a new year 😅 Not that 2024 was bad, but 4ish months of being back to project panning makeup practically every day really made me reevaluate/reaffirm a) what I actually like, b) what I’m genuinely willing to use/wear on a regular basis, c) more things on the ~fantasy self~ list that I keep to remind myself what I DON’T need to buy ever, and d) the fact that I am, at heart, simple and lazy in my routine. Oh, and after spending my entire life being afraid of blush due to my naturally extremely ruddy complexion (thanks rosacea), I think I can maybe possibly figure out how to make blush work for me rather than blanking my face out with foundation. Win for me!

See photos for the differences from August 2024 to now of my perfumes and my Urban Decay Naked Metal Mania palette. The perfumes are staying (I finished the Juliette Has A Gun sample), the palette is not. I am not a palette person, and this palette in particular is really not the kind of thing that makes me happy—I will not keep this clunky palette around for a grand total of 2.5 shadows that I like. No updates really on my mini Tarte blush or the Tarte bronzer because I haven’t used them a ton.

If anyone is looking for some interesting YouTube vids to watch related to makeup consumption, Amanda Z recently put out a video on “What I wish I knew before I got into makeup” — she talks about makeup collection auditing (basically inventory) vs declutterring, and how to make the audit/inventory process more introspective and reflective. I’m taking her points raised in that video and applying it to my makeup specifically so that I can have a collection that suits me better before/to avoid hate panning. I have other areas/things in mind for 2025, such as a planned low-buy and panning skincare/body care/haircare things I actually use on the daily and don’t feel like I have to drag myself into using.

See you all in the 2025 thread!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Cissy63 @itsfi thank you for the perfume encouragement! I love getting sent fragrances to rest, but personally I wouldn’t pick something that’s 3.4 fl oz/100 mL to purchase because my GOODNESS, it’s a lot to use

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I hear you about palettes @KeriCherryDee.  If most or all of the palette speaks to you, it is no value to you.  Nice job on the fragrances 😀

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

That's some fabulous usage on your fragrances @KeriCherryDee! I hear ya on blush - I spent more time with blush last year - using it more consistently, learning different techniques, etc. The seasonal cheek challenges were a fun way to try different things - Cheek Challenge Winter 2024/25, The Frost, The Glitz and The Wardrobe

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Sorry guys, I was lazy and haven’t posted my progress. I finished these (okie probably can use couple more times but it’s time to say goodbye) I need to work on other lipsticks 😘 and some other misc items

IMG_0966.jpegIMG_0969.jpeg

These I didn’t finished but they went bad either dried out or turn. 😢 so as much as I would like to hold on to them, it’s time to toss

IMG_0967.jpeg

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Oh wow you really worked with the lipstick collection @blackkitty2014 😃.  Great job 👏

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thx you @Cissy63 🌹

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Woah @blackkitty2014! Your pan results are nothing short of amazing! That's some impressive work with the lipsticks. What Tom Ford product was that in the photo with the Westman Atelier?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi @Those are TF duo cream eyeshadows. The top parts are kinda glitters. They’re good but I think without the cream products they will fall out. The lip was Moroccan. It’s my favorite shade but it turned and smell really bad heavy clay/plastic scent. I join lipstick challenge this year to do my lip inventory and toss out old lipsticks. Sigh

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I know this is the 2024 pan it challenge but for 2025 and am going to try to finish the rare beauty blush. Everyone says it never runs out but i think i can finish it. I am also going to try to finish the colorwow money mist. The last item i am going to try to finish is the first aid beauty toner. The reason i am not doing makeup is because my school does not allow it so i have to do skincare. Btw this is for the first half of the year. For the second half of the year i would like to do a fragrance.
