Hey y’all! Wanted to let you know that our vendor partners have been working on fixing the sort order of replies in this thread for MONTHS! We know how helpful the Beauty News thread is and how much good beauty info lives here. As far as we know, this is the only thread impacted by this sort order issue, and unfortunately our vendor partner has not been able to get to the root of the issue. Due to the popularity and high volume of replies here, our vendor partner has recommended starting a new Beauty News 2.0 thread, and linking to it here to direct other members to it… that is, if you wanted to start one. 😉

Sephora is partnering with Kohl's! 200 "Sephora at Kohl's" locations will open in fall 2021, with "at least 850 locations by 2023." This will replace Kohl's current beauty selection, both in store and online.

From today's press release:

"'Sephora at Kohl's' will be a fully-immersive, premium beauty destination, designed within a 2,500 square foot space and prominently located at the front of the store. When the first 200 locations open in Fall 2021, the Kohls.com online beauty selection will also convert to exclusively showcase an expanded assortment of Sephora's prestige product offerings.

Sephora at Kohl’s shops will replace Kohl's current in-store beauty assortment and their positioning at the front of the store will provide maximum exposure for Sephora’s brand partners. Exterior signage at locations that feature the in-store shops will display both Kohl's and Sephora branding. These locations will be selected based on existing Sephora store proximity, market opportunity and customer insights. Online, the Sephora at Kohl's experience will launch on Kohls.com in Fall 2021, making Sephora the exclusive beauty partner on Kohls.com.

The shops will be staffed by Sephora-trained Beauty Advisors, who will deliver the excellent customer service Kohl's is known for with the deep beauty expertise, consultations and assistance in product discovery that Sephora clients love.

Sephora purchases at Kohl's and Kohls.com will be eligible for Beauty Insider rewards benefits, as part of Sephora's award-winning loyalty program. Kohl's will also offer the added convenience of easy in-store returns, store pick-up, and curbside pick-up. Sephora.com and Kohls.com will also integrate their e-commerce experiences, allowing Sephora.com shoppers to find the nearest Sephora or Kohl's locations that have their beauty products available."

@ohheyitscindyk  -- I saw this discussed on one of the Reddit threads.  So my takeaway is a bit like this.  Kohl's one of the largest brick and mortar retailers left with a large suburban and rural presence that Sephora doesn't necessarily have.  I know many people who shop regularly at Kohl's.  I'm not one of them.  When I think of Kohl's I do not think trendy or young professional but rather a big box retailer that in my area leans to an older consumer or young families.  I don't say that to sound snobbish as I have stopped in and picked up a trendy top or two over the years or baby clothes for my nephew so it's simply my observation.  Other metro areas may have a completely different demographic.  

For example, Hourglass is luxe and traditionally has been sold only at Sephora and other high end retailers.  Ulta I do not associate with luxe rather more drugstore brands based on the stores in my area with limited "Prestige."  To an extent I can understand the appeal for Hourglass - it places their products in more retail locations.  On the other hand, as a consumer I feel it cheapens the brand image.  I still adore Hourglass so as long as quality remains the same or higher then that's ok.  I've lived in the EU where the drugstore with Chanel, Lancome and high end fragrances were common.  It just feels more unusual here.

So on that preface, Sephora is owned by a multi-national luxe conglomerate.  They sell luxe skincare, beauty and fragrance.  Sephora presents an image they are "luxe" and exclusive thus few sales and watered down loyalty program.  It is high contrast to Kohl's big box discount retailer image.  So like the Hourglass / Ulta collab, I feel this lessens the Sephora brand image.  Yes, I know they've been in JCP but really, what are they going to sell in Kohl's?   The Sephora collection and some of their least expensive product lines?  The general overall dichotomy of the targeted shoppers is distinct.  It's quite an "odd-couple collab.

Although there are several Kohl's in my metro area there are 3 freestanding Sephora locations within 15 minutes of my flat.  Personally, my shopping habits would not change.  Those are just my thoughts.  Again, I understand the appeal as the Kohl's locations provide Sephora with more opportunities to expand without investing a lot of capital into real estate as well as such expansion will provide some Sephora customers easier access than in the past. I think it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

@MCSSavvy You make good points. My closest Kohl's is about 6 minutes away, but I rarely shop there, though I hear their rewards program is pretty good? I'm also interested to see what the line up will be, considering that it will replace their current selection, including brands like theBalm that I hear are not as easily found elsewhere. My closest Kohl's is on one end of the shopping center, with Target on the other end, so it would also be interesting if Sephora joined that Kohl's & Ulta that Target.

@ohheyitscindyk I used to shop there for theBalm and Lorac but not anymore.  The nearest one to me is next to a Bath and Body Works, Ulta, Home Goods and Trader Joe's 2 minutes away from my house.  Honestly, I only go there to shop for baby and kid clothes.  They give out Kohl's cash when you spend a certain amount and at the time you could use it on makeup.  My Mother in Law loves shopping there but honestly it reminds me of Meryns from back in the day.

I just saw this!  @ohheyitscindyk The nearest Sephora to me is 4 hours in either direction and the nearest large Kohl's is 1.5 hours... I'm excited to see if that store scores some fun!!
