Old Beauty News Thread
You're right, @Nahnom . Wal-Mart has a reputation and demographic that are not prestige. I don't care if they carry a brand that's never been available to me before, but I've been really wanting--it's Wal-Mart and I will not step foot in that store unless I'm desperate! Makeup--regardless of brand--is not desperation.
The last time I was in Wal-Mart, people kept staring at me. I was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and a mask--I was overdressed and no one else was wearing a mask. 😱
@Titian06 I used to not mind Wal-Mart b/c I loved the low prices. But I haven't been to one in years and years b/c it just got too infuriating to be in there with some of the clientele, and the store just got shoddier and shoddier. I have a friend that is admittedly cheap, and she says the one by her is so gross that that is where she draws the line!
I just did a quick Google search, and People of Wal-Mart popped up. I thought it was shut down years ago.
@Titian06 ewwwwwwww 😷😤 I'm in Italy but, if I will ever have a chance to go to the US, I will never enter in a walmart 🤣
Could it be that this is a limited, trial-run? Is wallyworld a permanent place for these top-tier cosm., or diffusion-level range items? Certainly is a curious move. @ohheyitscindyk
@ohheyitscindyk Joining the surprised chorus: Space NK + Walmart = lolwut
I don't mean to sound negative toward Walmart or Space NK. It's just... this pairing is very odd. Last year, Walmart partnered with Uoma Beauty to sell a brand called Uoma by Sharon C, a sister brand of Uoma. This new brand has a lower price point than Uoma. It was a good fit for Walmart and, really, any drugstore. (I have 2 Uoma by Sharon C lipsticks and they're pretty good!) So I thought "hmm, maybe these prestige brands will create sub-brands with lower prices, or create a sub section of products at lower price points." Then I read this at Vogue Business:
"Products across the skincare, makeup and hair care categories will be available from 15 brands, including By Terry, Lancer, Foreo, Slip and others whose products sell in the $50 to $200 range."
Ummm... ? Is Walmart trying to change/expand their image? If I know I can buy By Terry products at Nordstrom and, via Nordy's rewards program, either earn or use points (Notes), then why would I buy from Walmart? I mean, I guess if I happened to be at a Walmart and wandered into the beauty section... or maybe if I had no local Nordy... but Nordy offers free standard shipping for nearly everything, so... ??
It'll be interesting to see how this partnership pans out.
@WinglessOne I thought I read it incorrectly at first lol. I agree; I would just buy from Nordstrom. I didn't know about the Uoma Beauty partnership!
@ohheyitscindyk The new Uoma brand launched last summer and I think the only places to get their products (excluding ebay and the like) are still Walmart and Uoma direct: they've split their main site into halves for each brand (the Uoma main brand and the Uoma by Sharon C sister brand). Someone in the beauty influencer sphere did a favorable video review of their products... Wayne Goss, maybe?
I'll have to keep tabs on this Walmart + Space NK deal. Several clothing and shoe brands have created sub-brands meant to sell at discount stores and places like Kohl's, and some beauty brands have also done it. If a local Walmart gets a Space NK section, that might be a reason to go out of my way to visit, just to check out what's available.
@WinglessOne Thanks for letting me know! Please report back if you visit 🙂
@WinglessOne To add onto your point, The Lip Bar created a more affordable sister brand called Thread that is at Target. So I do think there is an increasing number of bigger brands creating drugstore/more affordable sister brands (which I am all for!). Perhaps there will be a curated collection of SpaceNK items that are best suited for Walmart prices?
@Nahnom I'm not sure how a brand like By Terry can squeeze into Walmart's usual price range unless they create an offshoot/sibling/sub brand or, I dunno, only sell mini sizes of their most popular products at Walmart. Some prestige brands are overpriced anyway, but I can hardly wait to see if and how they alter some of their products for Walmart.
I'm almost tempted to ask By Terry about this. I'm picking on that brand because I've used many of their products. They make my absolute favorite setting powder. A full 10g size is $60 USD, but a mini 1.5g size is $19. The mini sounds teeny tiny, but that powder's so good, you need just the tiniest amount per application—so a mini jar can last a long time. That's the only way I can see By Terry selling that product at Walmart. Eh, they could also tweak the formula and sell it as a lower cost option. It'd be interesting to see how that powder would differ, performance-wise, from the original.
The Lip Bar is also at Target. I think Thread Beauty is specifically geared toward the gen z crowd: lower priced, but also "unconventional" in a Euphoria way. You just reminded me to keep an eye out for Thread at some of my local Targets. 👍
@WinglessOne I’m someone that avoids going to Walmart at all costs even though I have one 2 minutes away. It’s just always crowded so I just go to Target.
@SportyGirly125 The only times I visit a Chicago Walmart are when I'm leaving one of my doctors' office, which is near a "Neighborhood Market" Walmart. That type of Walmart is smaller than the usual full sized store. There's also a Target (a small "City Target") just down the street, plus a Trader Joe's around the corner, so I'm more likely to duck into those 2 stores than the little Walmart—even though that particular Trader Joe's is often crowded.
This seems like a really odd partnership. SpaceNK is quite high end, not sure I’d they’ll draw in the Walmart bargain shoppers. Seriously, this seems like fake news.
But will they be available for Walmart prices? 😂 I hope Walmart participates in SpaceNK's sales; they have some great ones. It will be nice to buy in the US instead of having to order some items from the UK.
@Ispend2much6 Well I sure hope the prices are standard Walmart prices 😅😂. I heard about SpaceNK as a retailer for more "prestige" brands so I find this an odd pairing.
Are you kidding?! Prestige brands at Wal-Mart? Has anyone from Space NK been to a Wal-Mart? Not exactly the correct demographic. 🤨
@Titian06 I know Walmart, but not familiar with SpaceNK. What kind of brands and prices are at SpaceNK? Is it mostly affordable? Mostly expensive/higher-priced brands? It would make sense for a retailer known for carrying lots of affordable brands to partner with Walmart, but a retailer known for non-drugstore priced/expensive brands is a bad fit.
@Nahnom I thought Space NK was higher end brands since they sell Oribe and had a small section in Bloomingdales.
So I always got the Sephora/JCP connection and wasn't surprised by the Ulta/Target deal or the Sephora/Kohls move, but this duo is one I did not see coming.
Hypebae reported March 1
John Demsey, senior leader at Estee Lauder will resign, effective this week. Lauder has asked Demsey to leave the business following a revolting Instagram post that included the use of racial slurs and a COVID-19 joke.
Demsey oversaw top brands such as Clinique and MAC. He was with the company for 30 years.
NYT reported Feb 28
Mr. Demsey was among the highest-paid executives at Estée Lauder, where his total compensation was valued at $9.6 million in 2021, according to a regulatory filing. Forcing Mr. Demsey into retirement, rather than firing him, may affect his stock awards and other compensation, according to the filing.
