Wow! @itsfi I appreciate good research!! Bahahaha might just need to conduct a trial study or two myself!
Absolutely @missjeanie! 😃 Science requires you conduct extensive trial studies on this; testing everything over and over again. 😉 You can never be too sure. 😂
@WinglessOne What good insight you have!!!! I feel less nervous. Thanks for sharing! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
@WinglessOne I've been frantically reading articles. Here's one from Yahoo! via WWD (I think):
Unilever has signed a deal to acquire skin care brand Paula’s Choice for around $2 billion, according to industry sources.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Unilever declined to comment on the price tag. WWD had previously reported in April that the brand was exploring M&A options, and that the business is expected to do more than $300 million in net sales for 2021.
Paula’s Choice was founded in 1995 by Paula Begoun, who authored “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” and “The Complete Beauty Bible.” Begoun was an early advocate for ingredient transparency in beauty, and Paula’s Choice was one of the first skin care brands to create an ingredient dictionary.
Paula’s Choice is well known for products like 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant and Niacinamide 20% Treatment.
The brand is primarily sold direct-to-consumer online, but also sells with Nordstrom and recently launched with Sephora
In a February interview, Paula’s Choice chief marketing officer Erika Kussmann said the brand was the largest d-to-c skin care brand in the world, and that the line had garnered Gen Z attention on TikTok and Reddit.
“The really great thing about d-to-c, working digital, is you have a very clear sense of the potential market and you can identify really high-potential audiences of people who haven’t been introduced to the brand yet,” Kussman said. “That gives you this idea of runway, and we know that there’s so much more ahead there.” At that time, just over 50 percent of Paula’s Choice’s sales came from international markets.
Paula’s Choice will become part of Unilever Prestige, run by Vasiliki Petrou, who called the brand “a true pioneer in the digital space” and “a mission-based brand rooted in truth and transparency.”
Unilever plans to bring Paula’s Choice to a larger audience of customers, Petrou said.
“Developing Unilever’s portfolio in the high-growth premium skin care segment is one of our strategic priorities and I’m excited that Paula’s Choice is joining us on this journey,” said Unilever Beauty & Personal Care president Sunny Jain in a statement.
Paula’s Choice is being sold by TA Associates, which invested in the business alongside Bertram Capital in 2016. At that time, the brand’s revenues were said to be around $70 million and the business was valued at $275 million.
The Unilever deal is expected to close in the third quarter. Industry sources said the brand hired three banks — Financo Raymond James as lead adviser, Piper Sandler and Morgan Stanley — for the deal.
For Unilever, Paula’s Choice adds another strong direct-to-consumer business to its prestige skin care lineup. Unilever also owns Tatcha, which it bought for nearly $500 million in 2019, as well as Murad, Dermalogica, Kate Sommerville and Ren.
The acquisition comes as Unilever re-thinks its beauty holdings. Executives have said publicly that the company is considering options for some of the smaller beauty and personal care brands sold in Europe and North America.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused many of beauty’s largest players to evaluate their brand portfolios, with many said to be considering divestitures.
@greeneyedgirl107 Yeah, I commented further down this thread about forgetting this is Unilever's "Prestige Group" division (because I keep forgetting they have such a division), and also forgetting about their Hourglass purchase. Unilever never enters my mind when I think about the megas that own all the beauty brands; my brain still hasn't registered that association. 😂 I'm still glad none of the other megas got their mitts on PC.
This changes my original "bridge between drugstore and higher end" perspective, but I'm still not very concerned. Considering, for instance, the product catalog activities at Tatcha before and after that brand's sale to Unilever, I'm not currently worried that PC will lose or reformulate (for worse) their most beloved products. I mean, I'm not a Tatcha skincare user so it's not like I frequently check their INCI lists or product offerings, but still: I haven't seen the same type of product explosion there as I've seen at PC under their current owner, and I don't expect to see it after PC's sale. 🤷♀️ So for now, I'm in wait-and-see mode.
@WinglessOne You've made a lot of very good points! You've calmed me down, and I need to repeat what you've said to myself 🙂
@itsfi I am SO disappointed to learn of this. PC is my fave brand, and I can't live without their BHA 9. I just hope they don't change that product. My oh my 😞
@greeneyedgirl107, BHA 9 is my favorite PC product as well! 💖 After I read the article, I did think about whether I needed to start stockpiling BHA 9. 😂🤣😂 I'll wait and see, but that still remains an option. lol.
@itsfi I think I'm going to order three of the BHA 9 since they're having their anniversary sale. Ironically, I just used the last little bit of my open tube (but of course have a back-up). How long do you think the product actually stays good for? (I always keep my products for way longer than what's printed, unless it's a Vitamin C I think has oxidized or something.)
@greeneyedgirl107, I think in general the products have a shelf life of 2 - 3 years unopened and maybe 12 months once opened. I’ll try to look into getting more info.
@itsfi this makes me nervous. I hope they keep making the same good formulas.
@sprocketta, I think there are many of us in that same boat about any reformulations that may take place post-sale. 😬 We shall wait and see.
@sprocketta I'm very nervous, too. I use several of their products, and have never seen a company make a formula change that was for the better. And, I've seen many good products be discontinued. I will have major anxiety if they do anything to their BHA 9. It's beyond HG for me. I think this company is heads and shoulder above so many others, and I can't fathom a skincare world without it's continued strong presence. A quick skin of Unilever brands doesn't seem to highlight many high end beauty lines, which makes me all the more nervous. Plus, I doubt PC will have as many good sales on their direct site. Of course, I will pay anything if they'd just leave well enough alone and keep their products as-is.
I also already contacted PC and Unilever!
ETA: Digging deeper: looks like Unilever Prestige has Kate Somerville, Dermalogica, Murad and Tatcha.
@greeneyedgirl107, you're awesome! I'll be interested in hearing what response you receive from PC and Unilever.
@itsfi They both got back to me very quickly.

If you have any other questions or concerns feel free to contact us.
@greeneyedgirl107- At least Paula's Choice put some thought into their form letter; and for the most part, used first person. Unlike Unilever's form letter, which is rather brusque and in third person. I hope that is not a reflection of the company.
lol. At least they were prompt in their responses back @greeneyedgirl107.
@greeneyedgirl107 Ah, I forgot this is the Unilever's "Prestige Group" division. See, I really never associate Unilever with beauty brands. 🤣 I forgot all about their Hourglass purchase. Anyway, this makes me even less concerned.
