Meaningful Beauty (Cindy Crawford's line) launching a new collection at Ulta on Aug. 20th

Meaningful Beauty

Spoiler
Meaningful Beauty is getting a Millennial makeover after 13 years on the market.

Cindy Crawford’s Guthy-Renker-owned skin-care brand, developed by her own cosmetic doctor, Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh, is unveiling new packaging and four new stockkeeping-units with modernized formulas next month. While one product — a serum — contains an update to the brand’s proprietary French melon ingredient, another product — a day moisturizer — offers protection from environmental pollution, including damage caused by infrared and blue light coming from smart phone, computer and television screens.

Abandoning its traditional, infomercial-first rollout schedule, Meaningful Beauty will launch the new collection in Ulta Beauty stores on Aug. 20, followed by Amazon and QVC and then a new infomercial in September. Guthy-Renker has already begun rolling out a digital and social media campaign targeted at the 25- to 34-year-old demographic.

Crawford told WWD the update was initially about getting the latest technology to brand’s the core customer base — 35 and up, with a big percentage in the 45-plus range. But the products also work for the selfie generation.

“The main mission is to keep Meaningful Beauty users we’ve had for more than 10 years now. We’ve earned their trust already, but…I’m getting older and as my needs change, I assume our customers’ needs are changing, too, and I want to give them solutions,” Crawford said. “But we’ll be attracting new customers with some of the innovations. Dr. Sebagh is so amazing at that — he first started talking about environmental pollution beyond SPF over 10 years ago.”

The effects of blue light on the skin, said Dr. Sebagh, are potentially as damaging — if not more so — than harm caused by the sun.

“Think about it — you spend more time in front of a computer than outside in the sun. Girls are [using flash to take selfies] 500 times a day,” said Dr. Sebagh, who operates clinics in London and Paris, as well as his own prestige line. Crawford has been a patient of Sebagh’s since she was 28. “One major culprit of aging is light pollution in general…young girls are coming in to dermatologist offices with fine lines, irritations, brown spots — [blue light] is in fact harming your skin if you expose yourself too much.”

The new products include a triple exfoliating treatment that also works as a mask, an overnight crème — the brand’s first with retinol — a day moisturizer containing the blue light filter, and a serum that harnesses melon stem cells, said to be more powerful than the brand’s original melon product. The products retail from $52 to $76.

“It’s not a complete relaunch, but more of an evolution,” said Laura Lum, senior vice president of retail and brand marketing at Guthy-Renker. “We’re keeping the melon heritage but adding new technology, ingredients and benefits…so many people are [in front of] screens, and we wanted to [provide] protection against pollution for that. The anticipation is out there in the market, so timing is good right now.”

Lum said Guthy-Renker is aiming to grow its Millennial customer base to ultimately comprise 15 percent of the business. “[Millennials] are very makeup heavy, but with the trend of ‘no makeup makeup’ there’s a need for skin-care benefits,” she said.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

Walgreens is also picking up Sleek Makeup

Sleek Makeup is rolling out to select Walgreens doors.

Spoiler
Walgreens Gets Sleek
Sleek Makeup is a pioneer in beauty trends including contouring and matte lipsticks.

One month after Walgreens Boots Alliance introduced Sleek Makeup to the U.S. with a launch at Ulta Beauty, the trendy brand is moving into 150 Walgreens doors and walgreens.com.

For Walgreens, Sleek adds another logo the chain can add to its merchandise mix to distinguish it from other mass contenders.

“Customers want to shop the most sought-after brands. The addition of Sleek Makeup to our cosmetic offering is just another example of how we continue to deliver on our promise to differentiate and elevate the beauty experience at Walgreens,” said Lauren Brindley, group vice president and general merchandise manager, Walgreens. She promised the chain will continue to add new brands and burnish the environment to build beauty sales.

While WBA executives declined to provide a first-year sales projection, industry sources speculate that the limited launch could yield between $5 million to $8 million in retail sales with the potential to achieve 10 times that prediction as it hits larger distribution.

In the past few months, Walgreens has brushed up its beauty presentation, adding more trained consultants and WBA brands such as Soap & Glory, Botanics and the cornerstone of its efforts, No. 7. The success of the upgraded beauty program encouraged Walgreens to extend the footprint to an additional 1,000 U.S. doors by the end of 2017. As of now, more than 2,000 stores have received the facelift. Walgreens executives said the company’s own brands make up 15 percent of beauty sales.

Sleek Makeup, which was acquired by WBA in 2015, has the potential to nudge that total even higher. It has a good track record based on the fact it has quickly become one of the fastest growing brands in the U.K., according to Lyle Tick, managing director at Walgreens Boots Alliance-Boots Retail USA.

Sleek Makeup was created by Dennis Tharratt, a beauty wholesaler operating in East London. He identified a lack of products suited for some of his consumers — especially those of Afro-Caribbean heritage. His response was Sleek Makeup, which was introduced in 1995 and picked up by Boots in 2006 and then purchased by WBA. While Sleek Makeup started as a brand for women of color, it evolved into catering to all skin tones. The brand has become associated with bold color performance at an affordable price. Prices range from $5.99 to $15.99.

The brand’s full line, including best-selling products like the Solstice Highlighting Palette, Cream Contour Kit and Major Matte Lip Cream, will be in the Walgreens assortment.

Sleek was an early pioneer of the contouring trend with the launch of Contour Kit in 2009, and was one of the first beauty brands to introduce the matte lip look with its Major Matte lipstick in 2012, according to Walgreens.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

Whee! Happy dance!

I had gotten a sample of bb don't blow it elsewhere last year and really wanted to buy the full size, and was so dismayed when I realized Ulta didn't carry it. Yay! Now I can coupon it down and pay with points! 😁

Asbestos Found in Makeup Sold by Popular Tween Clothing Store Justice

"They could die an untimely death in their 30s or 40s because of the exposure in this product," an expert says.

Spoiler

What could possibly be worse than finding out the makeup you use contains asbestos? Finding out the makeup your child uses contains asbestos.

The news team at WTVD, an ABC station in Durham, North Carolina, is reporting that its recent investigation into the ingredients of cosmetics aimed at tweens has revealed frightening results about a product sold at Justice, a national retail chain selling girls' apparel. According to the Scientific Analytical Institute in Greensboro, Just Shine Shimmer Powder tested positive for dangerous asbestos.

"In this powder designed for children, they could die an untimely death in their 30s or 40s because of the exposure to asbestos in this product," Sean Fitzgerald, the lab's Director of Research and Analytical Services, told WTVD.

Specifically, the lab found tremolite asbestos fibers, which contaminated the talc used in the Just Shine Shimmer Powder. Fitzgerald says the mineral reserve from which the talc was derived should have been tested for contamination; if it had been tested, it never would have been used by the manufacturer because the FDA prohibits asbestos-contaminated talc in cosmetics.

"Fibers like this get into your breathing zone, and when you inhale, these fibers can get into the lung and go to the very bottom of the lung, and that is exactly where you have the greatest likelihood of asbestos to cause disease," Fitzgerald said. "Children should not be allowed to breathe it. If a 10-year-old inhaled this fiber today, when he's 50 years old, it's still there." According to the National Cancer Institute, it can take at least 20 years for malignant mesothelioma to form after asbestos exposure.

As if the asbestos findings aren't scary enough, the lab also found the heavy metals barium, chromium, selenium and lead in Just Shine Shimmer Powder.

"The more lead you have in your system, the more negative health effects you're going to have," Fitzgerald explained. "Any amount of lead can be absorbed through the skin and go into your blood, and contribute to your overall poisoning of your blood."

When WTVD's Diane Wilson showed Justice the lab results, the company issued a statement: "Justice is committed to the safety and integrity of our products. Upon receiving the inquiry from WTVD, we immediately began an independent investigation. We cannot speculate regarding the matter until we have more information. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution, we have stopped the sale of this product while we investigate."

Birnur Aral, Ph.D., Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute's Health, Beauty and Environmental Sciences Lab, stresses that instances like this are examples of how cosmetics need to be regulated as tightly as pharmaceuticals and food.

"The Personal Care Safety Act, a bipartisan bill, has gained support from both small companies and giants of the industry as well as advocacy groups, and it has the best chance of modernizing our outdated cosmetics laws," Dr. Aral says. "Good Housekeeping has supported the bill for over a year. While it is not a cure-all in my opinion, it is a very good start toward safer cosmetics." (You can voice your own support at a petition here.)

Just Shine Shimmer Powder is no longer available for purchase on the brand's website, but it has not been added to their recalls section yet. Fitzgerald urges those who own the powder to stop using it and to "treat it like a deadly poison, because it is." The news station also notes in their report that other Justice products they tested did not come back positive for asbestos.

GoodHousekeeping.com has reached out to Justice for comment and will update this post when we hear back.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

That's awful! Pretty much all the kiddie jewelry that comes from stores like that and Claire's is contaminated with cadmium and lead too, so I suppose it's not surprising that there isn't sufficient QC on the makeup.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

This freaks me out. I wonder who the supplier of the talc was and whether this will prompt testing on other brands.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

@veronika23 I've never used makeup from Justice but now I'm paranoid about all of the possibly contaminated talc lol

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

@myumewyeah it's scary... I'm more worried about makeup from places like that though than makeup companies who have a rep to keep. Can you imagine a big makeup company having that problem. I don't think they would play that fast and loose though...

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

Wait, when did Rituals come to Ulta? How did I miss this?! And it's non-prestige, too. I can't wait for the next coupon :-)

PS Sorry if this is old news, but I was planning to make a Rituals purchase soon and I'm so excited I can just get it at Ulta.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

@DM91OMG!   I LOVE Rituals!  I also didn't know they came to Ulta - Thanks for sharing!!! <3

Besame - Fall 2017:

Besame is on a roll with these releases! I haven't found any other details yet, just a notification sign up page on their website.

besame agent carter.JPG

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

It's too bad they didn't come out with this while Agent Carter was still on tv. I'm disappointed that it was cancelled. I'm curious to see what a Marvel collection from Besame will look like.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

@KMariel It looks to me like it's supposed to be an Agent Carter collection rather than Marvel. I totally agree - I wish it was still on! But I am curious to see what they will release, although I'm assuming it will involve Red Velvet.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

Yay this thread is back!

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

Yay!!!! Beauty News is back!  Again all jumbled though Smiley Sad  Missing the new updated info on the first pages.

Re: BEAUTY NEWS

OMG there was a crap storm going on in a post Trendmood made about a new product from Zpalette.  Zpalette is being pretty rude and unprofessional. Now I don't depot and what I have that is just pan is in a MUFE palette because I like them and it's a good price.  I will for sure never buy from Zpalette... What company treats people this way... so unprofessional... Here's a few comments:
