We'll call this first update "The Lift - Pt. 1". We're so excited to be releasing this palette. As fans of the movie ourselves we can't think of a better way to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the film then by releasing a makeup palette!

 

Ok, so there are 3 important dates for you to know:

 

Saturday, March 18th - Pre-Order Date

Wednesday, April 12th - Pre-Orders Ship

Saturday, April 22nd - Palette Release Date

 

At 12:00 p.m. PST on March 18th, we will have 1,000 Dirty Dancing palettes available for pre-order at our online store ($36.00). If you're able to purchase it at that time then your palette will be mailed to you on April 12th. If the pre-order sells out before you can buy one then you'll be able to order yours on the official release date of April 22nd.

For the past couple of years, cult-favorite brand Melt Cosmetics has been known for its ultra matte lipsticks and pigmented shadows. Now, Melt Cosmetics Digital Dust Highlights will also be joining their family of bold cosmetics, taking the brand into a new, uncharted category.

While I was scrolling through the IG explorer page for my daily dose of time-lapse makeup tutorials, I came across an absolutely stunning image of a model with a jaw-dropping glow glimmering along her cheek bones. As an assistant beauty editor who's all about that glow I, of course, had to learn more. I found myself on Lora Arellano's profile page (one of the founder's of Melt Cosmetics). Beneath the image, Arellano sneakily announced that Melt Cosmetics is launching its first highlighter ever. "That @meltcosmetics highlight doeeee!! In shade Stargazer," she wrote. Like myself, many fans freaked out at the news. "Did you say @meltcosmetics highlighter??!!!! My prayers have been answered," wrote one user. Many also questioned the exact timing of this glorious highlighter. Arellano responded to fans verifying that the highlighter will be coming out next month. Squeals. But wait, it gets even more exciting. Melt Cosmetics gave us the full lowdown on their glow babies.

Before we jump into it, here is a bit of background on Melt Cosmetics for those who aren't familiar. The company was founded by Arellano and Dana Bomar in 2013. Both founders began their careers as makeup artists. They met while working behind the counter in the beauty department at Nordstrom where a friendship and a partnership bloomed. Mexican-American Arellano has gained a robust social media following for her impressive makeup skills and has even scored gigs working with with huge celebrities like, oh, Rihanna. Both ladies used their own brands on social media to promote Melt Cosmetics, which now has more than 2.3 million followers. The brand started out with a line of supermatte and bold lipsticks (which Allure editors love), and has extended its range with highly pigmented eyeshadows — and now highlighters as well.

Melt Cosmetics plans to launch not one but three Digital Dust Highlights in universally flattering shades: Star Gazer (a soft champagne), Gold Ore (a warm gold), and Nova (a warm bronze). While most highlighters only come in one form, this unique formula combines the qualities of a baked powder, cream, and fluid texture. According to the brand, the highlighters are equipped to last for up to 12 hours and judging by the images below, the formula provides a second-skin finish leaving behind a dewy and healthy (not metallic) finish. Meaning if you're not a glitter fan, these new shades may be right up your alley. Like the rest of the Melt Cosmetics products, the highlighters are 100 percent cruelty-free and vegan. The Melt Cosmetics Digital Dust Highlights will be available in April for $39 each, at meltcosmetics  com. For now, here's a first look at the brand's campaign, showing how the highlighters look on different skin tones.

Influencers don’t only move the sales needle for beauty brands they tout. With consumers’ tuned into their every move; more of the social stars are launching their own cosmetics. The latest to do so is Mariale Marrero, a Venezuela-born YouTube star who is releasing her own lip kit bearing her name.

She joins others such as Jaclyn Hill, who is behind a Morphe eye shadow palette, and Kandee Johnson, who served as an authority for two nail color collections for SinfulColors.

Marrero has multiple English and Spanish-language social platforms commanding more than 10 million followers including three YouTube channels, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Her video announcing the lip kits is approaching 40,000 views in three days.

She teamed with makeup brand IGXO Cosmetics to translate her favorite lip looks into three lip kits — Karma, Bom Bom and Tako. Sold on her own site, MarialeMarrero.com, the kits retail for $14.50.

“The lip kits are very girly…very positive and bubbly,” said the effervescent Marrero in an interview with WWD, adding she was involved in everything from the package design to the color choices. “I’m a biologist, so I’m comfortable working with formulas. It was important for me to develop a line of lip wear that could go with me everywhere, from day to night, for all occasions.”

One issue she wanted to address with her lip products was to make a product that hydrates because she feels most products on the market dry lips out. Marrero hopes to expand into other beauty categories and uses immediate feedback from followers for future ideas.

Marrero started her YouTube channel in 2010 in Venezuela to serve what she saw as a neglected audience. She moved to the U.S. with her husband in hopes of finding better income opportunities, eventually settling in Los Angeles. With her Spanish-speaking YouTube channel growing in popularity, she added an English channel — partially to boost her grasp of the language but to broaden her scope. The English channel, which just hit one million followers — there are 5.8 million across her two Spanish channels — in particular has been fertile for beauty.

“I’m a lover of makeup,” she said, noting she feels the impact of influencers will expand. “Who wants to spend money on cosmetics they aren’t happy with when they get home. You can get authentic reviews from someone who you feel is your best friend,” she said. “They [bloggers and YouTubers] aren’t going away.”

While it might look easy, Marrero said the perfect video or Instagram post takes great effort. “Not everyone can do it and some give up if they aren’t successful right away, they give up,” she said. She also tweaks her content based on the platform.

“My fans know the brands I love because I use them all the time,” she adds. “Smashbox Photo Finish Primer is in every one of my videos,” laughed Marrero, who has collaborated with a long list of beauty companies including Smashbox, L’Oréal, MAC and Pantene.

OPI, which built an empire on nail care, is now betting big on care.

The Coty Inc.-owned professional nail brand this month is introducing ProSpa, a line of hand and foot care formulated with dermatologic ingredients. OPI tapped dermatologist Dr. Zena Gabriel to consult on the line, which was inspired by antiaging facial skin care. Industry sources estimate the line will do about $15 million in salon sales in its first year.

On May 15, the 14-stockkeeping-unit assortment will bow in 1,080 CosmoProf doors, including items such as the Moisture Whip Massage Cream, Intensive Callus Soothing Balm, Protective Hand Serum and Moisture Bonding Ceramide Spray. The products are designed for use as add-on treatments during manicure and pedicure services. Prices range from $31.95 for a manicure starter kit and pedicure starter kit, to $65.95 for a combination manicure/pedicure starter kit and $299.95 for a salon starter kit. Products will be sold individually as well, and a hand and nail cuticle cream and a cuticle oil will be available at Ulta Beauty.

OPI is known at retail for its expansive range of colored lacquers, but as consumers look to break from the damaging effects of gel polish, treatment products have emerged as a potential growth opportunity in the nail category. The line is also tapping into the wellness trend that is permeating every area of the beauty industry.

“We are the color authority, and we’re going to be the skin-care authority in the professional nail industry as well,” said OPI cofounder and brand ambassador Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, who noted that the line is meant to drawn in younger consumers. “The Millennial generation is very conscious of ingredients, they really look at what’s inside.”

Speaking of ingredients, ProSpa harnesses Brazilian cupuaçu butter, white tea extract — the antioxidants are said to reduce free-radical damage — and peptides.

“Millennials are concerned with, ‘What is the active ingredient — what’s working?” added Gabriel, ProSpa adviser and ambassador. “We took a cosmeceutical-based science approach to ingredient mixing.”

According to Gabriel, the Millennial obsession with noninvasive procedures and antiaging treatments — which WWD has previously reported on — is moving toward the hands and feet. “People are requesting laser and cosmetic procedures [on parts] other than the face — they want to look more manicured,” said Gabriel. “A lot of women ask me how they can help their hands — two years ago, we got injectables approved for hand [usage]. There’s a growing demand.”

For Weiss-Fischmann, ProSpa is a way to turn the salon experience around, and get customers away from no-frills, inexpensive mani-pedi joints. “Salons need a menu,” she stressed. “The idea of using several products to achieve that perfect luxury service is important. When you have a facial, there are so many different products. Why isn’t it the same for hands and feet?”

Pointing to the rise of upscale nail salons such as Tenoverten, Jin Soon, Paintbox and Valley Nails, Weiss Fischmann predicted that nail salons could be the next blow-dry bar models, especially as consumers wise up to ingredients and cleanliness standards.

“Salons started upstairs, and they went downstairs very quickly,” said Weiss Fischmann. “Salon chains are moving to be more luxurious and that’s where ProSpa comes in. It’s going to go back upstairs again, with whoever is going to do this kind of chain, branded salon right.”

I had two sales associates give me that date over the past weekend. Time to start studying up on what new brand I want to give a try this time. NOT Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Lashes!
