skincare advice for cystic acne

i've been obsessed with skincare for a while now. it's hard to get into makeup when your face gets oily and is covered in acne. i also get overwhelmed by all the products out there. i'm mostly interested in the drunk elephant line and the eradikate daily cleanser acne treatment. mostly because i have cystic acne on my cheeks and semi on my chin. they're constantly popping up and i just want to find something that'll stop that. ironically it's the t-zone that's oily and my cheeks aren't.

i've tried a lot of things but it feels like my skin doesn't react to anything and i don't want to overdo my skincare because that can also be bad for your skin. i've tried the ordinary retinol and rosehip oil, neutrogena face wash with 10% benzoyl peroxide, a lot of stuff with tea tree oil in it as well as silicic acid.

sephora literally just came out with a scouted by sephora skincare set and it includes drunk elephant so i want to try it. plus i can get a sample of kate somerville's facial wash. but the body shop is currently having a major sale right now and i heard a lot about their tea tree line. what do you think is better?

also, opinion on aquaphor and differin gel? i heard a lot about those as well.

Re: skincare advice for cystic acne

Just replying with a followup - I recently discovered blue clay soap by Herbivore and I am SO SO happy with the results.

A few notes about me: Extremely sensitive to chemicals, age 37, combination skin (dry on the sides of my face, oily T-zone),  cystic acne which began after stopping birth control pills which controlled moderate to severe acne, cruelty-free products are important to me.

My current regime for cystic acne includes:

AM:

Herbivore Blue Clay Soap

Dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery lotion in the AM

Dermalogica Hydrablur primer

PM:

Herbivore Blue Clay Soap

AcneFree sensitive toner (a fruit enzyme toner)

AcneFree sensitive repair lotion (With 3% Benzoyl Peroxide)

Dermalogica Sleep Cocoon Moisturizer

RE: skincare advice for cystic acne

OK SO! I have probably the same skin. I’ve been breaking out since I was 12 maybe (now 30). Skincare obsession too! I get cystic acne along my jaw line and down my neck and then pimples anywhere and oily. First and foremost! CHECK YOUR DIET!!! I will go from a CLEAR face to the worst acne and painful zits - if I have ANY dairy. I’m about to cut out eggs too, due to all their hormones. It sounds horrible to cut yummy stuff out, but it’s 2017 and they make perfectly fine replacements. You’ll need to give the diet check sometime - probably a good month or two. You will need to have a current breakout, stop breaking out, and start healing. But for the fun stuff: - twice a week I use PMD Pro at home microdermabrasion. I saved up for this baby. It’s crucial with oily & acne prone skin to keep those pores clean so there’s no build up. - I follow with Exuviance performance peel (on amazon) - dr. Jart micro milk peel at night helps to prolong the efforts of the microdermabrasion and peel I TRIPLE cleanse. I “wash” my face with water, you will literally feel the days slime wash off. Dry face. - origins modern friction for exfoliating, I don’t have a schedule for this, o see how my skin is doing and use as necessary. Mostly pm. - drunk elephant Pekee bar. It fits in a soap dish. It keeps my skin hydrated and soft and actually helps to maintain clear skin Remember hydration is not the enemy when you have oily / acne prone skin. It very well could clear up a large portion of your break out. Use a light, hydrating moisturizer Drink water!

Re: skincare advice for cystic acne

I tried the Drunk Elephant soap bars and they did nothing for my acne plus after about a week, the white soap bar smells like sour milk 😮

RE: skincare advice for cystic acne

Try a cleanser or cream with salicylic acid. This gets down into the pores and cleans them out. peter Thomas Roth makes one, even though it's labeled for anti aging this cleanser is great for acne.

RE: skincare advice for cystic acne

The pumpkin mask from peter Roth Thomas works amazing for acne. But don't scrub too hard. I feel like getting the dead skin cells and oil build up off my face helps my acne products absorb better into my skin for a clear complexion.

I too would like advice on this 😞 even my acne prescription cream isn’t getting rid of the white heads that always appear on my chin
