Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

My eyelids have always been super oily. Whenever I did my eyeshadow it would be gone within an hour if I didn't wear primer. A few weeks ago I had to redo my makeup multiple times and I applied eye primer each time I redid my eyes. After a while my eyelids started burning and I got red bumps so I figured my skin was irritated. The next day my eyelids were super super dry and itchy which has never happened to me in my life. It's been a week now and I haven't worn any makeup all week. My redness went away but my eyelids are still super dry despite moisturizing them 4 times a day with vaseline. What should I do? Am I allergic to my eyeshadow primer?

Re: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

i’ve had the same problem and i still do? honestly from my perspective u really just need to be washing ur face more and use some skincare products directly made for oily skin even if it’s not ur whole face that’s oily it’s just your eyelids, trust me!! promise it will help girl!!!!!!

RE: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

I have the same issue and I have to wash my lids with natural oatmeal based soap every night as part of my bedtime routine. As long as I don't skip this step my eyelids are perfect the next day. Also, instead of Vaseline I would suggest you use some coconut oil after the soap. Perfect combo. Hope this works!

Re: RE: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

Thank you so much I will definitely try that. I have noticed that my skin doesn't absorb vaseline. Can you by any chance tell me where I can purchase oatmeal soap?

Re: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

I get dry/rough/irritated eyelid sometimes, especially in the fall when it starts to get dry/cold.

Vaseline and other thick stuff won't really help, they are great at protecting the surface of the skin in dry weathers when it's easy to get windchapped skin, but you need something that absorbs deep into the skin to hydrate and help it heal. I recommend a plain gel moisturizer (Clinique Moisture Surge or Peter Thomas Roth Cloud cream etc) or a lightweight oil (Boscia Tsubaki or Tatcha gold).

That should help you heal, but also make sure you are not using a makeup remover or cleanser that is too harsh/drying for your eyelid. Oil-based makeup remover (Shu Uemura or Tatcha cleansing oil, Clinique purple jar balm) are great at removing even waterproof makeup fast without tugging/irritating your eyelid.

Thank you so much, I think that the cold weather is definitely making my eyes worse. For some reason I never considered that my makeup remover could also be a factor. My eyelids always burn after wiping off my makeup, thanks so much for the recommendations!

Re: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

Vaseline is a great when protecting your skin...but it sounds like you need a moisturizer for your eyes that your skin can drink up without being smothered. I would try to find an eye cream that isn't to heavy and doesn't have a lot of things like petroleum or dimethicone so your skin can breath. Also so you can give your eye area attention..without making the oiliness worse. I have really oily eye lids and most eye creams end up giving me milia under my eyes. I have used the Lush Enchanted Eye Cream (not Sephora) for years because its super light...but potent....or just letting your moisturizer do the work...but you can always get a sample of that and see if it works for you!

Eye primer is so sticky...I used to love the Too Faced shadow insurance but it just made my eyes so angry after a while. I really love the Nars eye shadow primer. I also use the MAC paint pot in soft ochre on my eye lids as a primer too.

Just a thought!

Re: Tips on preventing dry eyelids?

I'll check these recommendations out since I definitely need a moisturizing under eye cream. I'm also considered a new primer since my eyeshadow looks cracked because of how dry my eyes are, I find that matte primers make dryness worse. Thanks so much for the tips.
