Regimen for late 40's?

Hi,

I have been a skincare addict for so many years, tried every brand from Dr. Perricone to Olay, and everything in between.   I have very fair skin, sun damage, some creases (11's) and I started to get away from so many different products due to frequent travel.  I began using Argan Oil, Moringa, etc.  Now I'm looking for a stable regimen that will help with firming, tone, texture, and work on the remaining sunspots.  I want to keep it simple, but don't know where to start with all the Korean brands and the essence, and serum, sleeping masks.  I think you get the point.  If anyone can share the best ingredients & solid regimen, I would be grateful.  No matter how expensive the foundation is, if the skin isn't decent, its a waste of money.

Thanks a bunch to anyone who can help 🙂

@mstish Putting together a regimen can be challenging.  I rec reading "The Beauty Bible" by Paula Begoun to demystify skincare.  Also, beautypedia is a great source for reviews.

As for what's "new" with K-Beauty, masks, etc - I feel overwhelmed as well.  But I think a lot of what's "new" is kind of trendy...

Best of luck!  🙂

Re: Regimen for late 40's?

sounds like you have the main over the counter skincare ingredients covered (acid, vit c, retinol). I would suggest looking into other anti-oxidants as well (resveratrol and others).

I think one of the best things to consider at this age is dermatologist treatments and prescription products (like retin-a), particularly if you want to keep your routine simple. I have gotten great results with SCITON BBL (kind of a next generation IPL laser) that really made a difference with pigmentation and texture. Once you get into late 40's, there is really only so much that over the counter skincare can do, even if the products are great. I am nearly 45 and the difference in the last 1-2 years is big vs. early 40's.

you mentioned dermaroller. devices are another area you could consider. I noticed a big difference with regular LED treatments from an aesthetician. There are also at-home devices available. I just ordered this one from DDG but haven't tried it yet.

Re: Regimen for late 40's?

Since you are in your 40s here's what I recommend. You may not necessarily need all these steps but here's a good start.

I'm sure you have heard the cleanse, tone, moisturize method which you still need to apply to your routine, but now there are extra steps.

Cleanser: You didn't say your skin type in your bio but I'd recommend the youth to the people age prevention cleanser. It doesn't strip the skin of moisture and it's very natural. If you wear makeup daily then I'd suggest double cleansing. First I like to rub clinique take the day away cleansing balm gently over my skin then finish it off with my cleanser. There are so many cleansers out there so just choose the one for your skin type.

Toner: A lot of people seem to like the fresh rose toner at sephora but I personally use the thayer's rose toner (it's drugstore and gives the same results imo). Make sure your toner doesn't contain alcohol, as this is drying and prematurely aging.

Since you have sun damage you need to start apply a vitamin c and retinol to your regimen as well as a good SPF in the morning. I use the biossance vitamin c oil after cleansing in the morning. The drunk elephant vitamin C I like as well but you may use any that you like. Vitamin C helps protect you from sun damage. I also apply an SPF each morning. 90% of all aging is due to sun damage (yes even in the winter when we are barely outside).

At night apply a retinol. A good drugstore one is the roc deep wrinkle and my favorite one at sephora is the algenist firming serum. Start off by using a retinol 2-3 nights a week and see how your skin reacts. Retinols are very strong and some people may experience irritation if they start using every day. If you are still sensitive apply after your moisturizer at night. If retinols aren't your thing, I recommend glycolic acid like the drunk elephant. Use one or the other, not both. They are both powerful exfoliators.

Moisturize: It's great that you are using the argan oil, it's a very effective anti ager. I also love maracuja oil as well and like to apply it. I'd recommend a thick moisturizer at night and a gel one in the morning as they are lighter and don't look oily/greasy.

Oil: I apply oil last at night. There are several at sephora and they work well in combination with moisturizer. Herbivore makes lots of great ones.

Weekly Mask: I recommend the drunk elephant baby facial once a week or the herbivore blue tansy mask (do the same thing and are natural). You need a mask to exfoliate the skin. I also use some of the k beauty masks such as the egg masks and the laneige. They are affordable and I recommend you check them out. I also use charcoal masks if my skin feels clogged or my pores are large.

Eye cream: This is probably one of the most important steps you can do right now. The areas that show aging first are around our eyes, mouths, and necks (the skin is thinner there). Apply an eye cream morning at night. Also apply it around your mouth to help prevent lines.

Collagen: There are many liquid collagens out now and I'd definitely recommend one.

I use a derma roller before skinceuticals b e serum on certain nights. I'd also invest in some good supplements for the skin.

Don't neglect your hands either! Invest in a good hand cream too. Drink tons of water!

Hope this helps!

I'm 41. No 11's but a lovely random horizontal crease and some light crosshatching under my eyes. I have faint smile lines, but I don't worry about those, I figure those I've earned them and they seem pretty natural to me. the forehead...bugs me. Every day: AM - wash face with bioderma sensiobio. Vitamin c (ole Henrikson truth serum) and la Roche posay duo+ twice a week. I use a plain Jayne moisturizer and a mineral sunscreen (banana boat naturals spf 50. yes it's thick) PM: wash face with bioderma sensiobio micellar water and la Roche posay Toleraine. Retinol 2x week, glycolic acid 1x week. Same moisturizer. My skin, save for that stupid line, is pretty great. Most people think I'm wearing foundation when I just have sunscreen and powder on. if that was overwhelming, it is really just: gentle fash wash and boring moisturizer 2x a day, vitamin c and sunscreen everyday, and alternating retinol, salicylic acid and glycolic acid. I wouldn't try all those things at once. I've been working that out for a couple of years, because my skin is dry and sensitive so it took forever to find the right products that worked and didn't wreck my face. I just introduced the retinol, but it's for the dreaded forehead line and no results yet but my face is ok. Have you checked out hotandflashy (hotnflashy?) on YouTube? She is a wealth of information for us ladies 😀

Thank you so much for the reply.  I'm using derma roller and Vit C, I have retinol, Glycolic, and alternate glycolic day and retinol night.  I don't know if I need a moisturizer over the retinol.  I also use a Vit C daily over glycolic and a Niacinamide from Amazon that I love.

I want to get more of a program going, that isn't so crazy as mine.  I don't know if these are doing any good for me or could be used better if applied differently.

I'm doing research and seems you did yours.  I'll read it again and try to see how it works for me.

Oh, yes love Hot and Flashy, just don't have a ton of time to search and watch.

Thanks again 🙂
