Itโ€™s May, Hurray! ๐ŸŒธ We are almost 1/2-way through this yearโ€™s challenge๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Thank you @Aaliaa for starting this thread, and giving us a place to share our love for masks๐Ÿ’— Post as frequently or infrequently as you would like, with or without following the challenge. We love hearing about every masking experience, and suggestions are always welcome.

This Weekโ€™s Theme: Masks that Make You Hungry ๐Ÿ˜‹Is it the scent..or the packaging? Which masks make you crave a yummy treat? It is no surprise that this weekโ€™s delicious theme is brought to you by none other than @itsfi! ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿต

Mask of the Week Misc. Info & Previous Year's Links:

To Post:

Each week features a different theme, as well as a letter of the alphabet for coming up with new masking ideas.

Please include the brand and name of the mask you are trying out, as well as a photo if possible. Any other details are greatly appreciated, including scent, if it's an exfoliating mask (include acid info if known), your overall experience, and whether or not you would repurchase. Don't forget to include a grade (thanks to @ShortErica for the idea) to help others along the way.

Most importantly, have fun and merry masking!

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@itsfi  Is this them?  I wasnโ€™t expecting them to be synthetic. I have half a mind to go buy some silk satin and figure out how to line my prรฉ existing  masks with it.

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

Yes @heartsmyface! Those are the ones. I didn't realize they were made of synthetic material either. Grrr. Good catch.

That's so funny you brought up buying your own silk fabric and using it to line your masks. I was toying with the idea of picking up some fabric as well and making my own version of this liner.

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@itsfi   Itโ€™s definitely looking like thereโ€™s a void in the market for silk liners.  Everything Iโ€™m

seeing is โ€˜silkyโ€™ and synthetic or silk but with seams against the face.   I want the satin on the INSIDE of my mask and with none of the seams against my face.  Iโ€™m thinking French seams will hide nicely.  Am I asking a lot?  It appears so.  Iโ€™m going to make some patterns tonight and play with an old silk pillowcase and see what works.  Oh yes!!! Silk on the bias is definitely the answer!  Itโ€™s got the perfect amount of stretch!
D says we can take a trip to fabricland tomorrow and, lol, I donโ€™t have to cut up the linens.  Iโ€™m all wanting to start NOW!   ๐Ÿ˜…

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@heartsmyface, is this something that might work for you? It looks like a Canadian based company.

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@itsfi  Hey theyโ€™re local!  Iโ€™ve got my heart set on arts and crafts now so too late.  I got a little kick out of their washing instructions though!  Do not microwave.  That cannot be good for the elastic or the microwave.

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

The arts and crafts will be fun @heartsmyface! ๐Ÿคฉ Keep us posted!

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@itsfi   wow, youโ€™ve done so well this month!!  not to be a little devil on your shoulder or anything but a device to protect your skin from friction and from getting raw hardly counts as a beauty purchase unless you plan to buy a few other items in the same transaction.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

I imagine going through your empties at the end of the month is going to be VERY satisfying knowing you didnโ€™t bring anything in all month!  ๐Ÿ˜„

Re: ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ˜Œ Mask of the Week Challenge ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’–

@heartsmyface, completely agree! ๐Ÿ˜„ I would pull the trigger on the mask liners but as you said, there are a *few* things that I have in my cart that are not as functional as the mask liner. Heehee!

I'm so happy to have pushed these out the door and happier still that there are some unused items I am able to donate. I've also been setting aside a handful of other new and unused products, with the idea that if I don't reach for them by the end of summer, I'll donate those as well. It'll be very satisfying to know that the only things I've purchased this month is food. lol.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

S = soothing and singular. Last nightโ€™s mask was the Dewytree Cica 100 Mask. My oily zone is angry about an oil cleanser sample I tried 2 days ago: lots of little bumps and lots of redness. Perfect time to test this mask!

I finally know what centella asiatic actually smells like! :DI finally know what centella asiatic actually smells like! ๐Ÿ˜„

Claims: Soothes irritated or inflamed skin; strengthens skin barrier.

Ingredients: 100% centella asiatica extract. Nothing else.

Iโ€™ve talked a lot about cica in this thread, as itโ€™s one of my skinโ€™s favorite ingredients. Besides famously soothing inflammation, cica can boost skinโ€™s production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Thatโ€™s a huge bonus for my 48 year old mostly-dry combo skin.

Performance: This stiff yet fairly soft thin gauze cotton/algae/eucalyptus sheet was tinted brown by very runny serum that felt both watery and oily. The sheet was a great length for my face and needed no hole trimming, though the eyeholes werenโ€™t as large as Iโ€™d like. The sheet has an average width, so it left parts of my jaw bare. Luckily there was a handful of serum left in the sleeve: I applied that to my bare jaw and patted it over the sheet on my forehead, nose area, and cheeks.

The serum has a slight green plant scent, almost pine-like but not quiteโ€ฆ I canโ€™t describe it much further than that. If this is what cica actually smells like, itโ€™s a very mild scent. Once the sheet was on my face, I smelled nothing.

The sheet behaved better than I expected, considering the viscosity and drippiness of the serum. It never slid down at all or came unstuck at the chin. After 30 minutes of wear, I removed the sheet and let the serum sink into my skin on its own for about 10 minutes before pressing it in. I had no pilling, but my skin did feel a bit tacky.

Results: Nicely hydrated skin that looked noticeably less red and felt well moisturizedโ€”though I suspect โ€œmoisturizedโ€ was actually emollient in this case, so: this cica serum left an emollient film on my skin surface, and my face had no issue with it. I applied my usual YTTP Superfood Moisturizer over it to seal in that hydration and emollience, and my oily zone didnโ€™t feel swamped. That zone was still in bumpy reaction mode, but it felt much calmer: no more weirdly angry buzzing beneath the surface.

I bought a box of this mask thinking โ€œitโ€™s nothing but cicaโ€ฆ my skin LOVES cicaโ€ฆ how can this purchase possibly go wrong?โ€ Answer: it canโ€™t. ๐Ÿ‘ Iโ€™m glad to have a tangible example of what cica can do all by itself. This mask is a 94-95 point 100% malbec wine. Malbec is often blended with other grape varietals in French* wines, but Argentina keeps proving how amazing it can be on its own. Thatโ€™s what Dewytreeโ€™s done with centella asiatica. Iโ€™m going to bottle leftover serum from the rest of these masks, and will definitely buy more of them.

*Eh, one region of France does still make 100% malbecs, and they taste quite different from Argentina's. It's a great example of how terroir effects the taste of a varietal. French malbecs have more tannic backbone, while Argentinian malbecs are lusher. Not to encourage more wine drinking but, you know, you could do wine flights of French vs. Argentinian malbecs... that'd be a fun evening! ๐Ÿท

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@WinglessOne  I don't have much experience with wine, but I did go on a wine tour once and I figured out I like dessert wine the most. Haha!

This sounds like a mask I need to get my hands on! Dewytree makes some great masks and this one certainly sounds wonderful! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ The scent you described sounds like the scent of the CosRx Pure Fit Cica cleanser I just bought - pine was what first came to mind. I would really love to sniff a Cica plant!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@Shosh85 I think that cleanser contains pine extract... asking Google... yep, Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract is the last ingredient. That's actually a pretty good anti-inflammatory ingredient and a great source of antioxidants. I'm surprised the cleanser doesn't smell more like eucalyptus, since it contains that oil. How are you liking the cleanser so far?

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@WinglessOne  Just tagged you below ๐Ÿ˜‰ I forgot about the pine extract in it - but I guess that makes since because that's what was the most apparent to me. I wonder if the Cica is making is smell more pine-y, or if it's just the pine extract I'm smelling. ๐Ÿค” The scent takes some getting use to!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

Ooo I think I was looking at that cleanser. How long have you been using it @Shosh85?

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@ShortErica @WinglessOne  I have two cleansers in rotation right now - this CosRx one and the Paula's Choice Hydrating cleanser. Before that I was using the CeraVe hydrating cleanser. I have been using the CosRx cleanser every night for about a week and I use the PC in the AM. Most products that foam/bubble up cause me a lot of dryness, and it does leave my skin feeling drier compared to the PC and CeraVe cleansers, but not so dry that my skin feels stripped. It kinda feels like it's giving me a bit of the deeper clean compared to the other two.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

Do you have a preference of PC vs CeraVe @Shosh85? My latest bottle has a slight plastic scent when applying but doesn't last. Just enough to bug me. My on deck is a La Roche Posay cleanser but if you are impressed with PC, maybe that will be the next I check out. Thanks!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@ShortErica  I do think that the PC hydrates a wee bit better than the CeraVe and I love the lotion-y consistency. I probably should start taking notes on other products I use besides masks, because I don't remember a whole lot about the CeraVe. I honestly don't remember how it smelled, I just remember not loving it or hating it. I'm not so sure you'd like the scent on the PC any better - I don't think I'd describe it as plastic - in mask language I'd describe it as your standard sheet mask kind of scent. ๐Ÿ˜… I don't love it, but I really only smell it for a few seconds. I'm wondering how @WinglessOne would describe the scent on the PC, since I feel like I can't really describe it well. ๐Ÿค”

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

Hmm.. @Shosh85. The thing that bugs me about the CeraVe is I've used bottles and bottles and there was never a scent and now there is. And according to my bottle it is the same exact ingredients as the last bottle I had. So I felt like my trust was violated and it's time to move on. Plain ole sheet masks sounds okay.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@ShortErica  That's so weird. I don't remember the scent too well, but I feel like I would've remembered a plastic scent ๐Ÿค” My first thought, like @WinglessOne already mentioned, is that maybe the actual bottle/plastic is different. I'm almost tempted to buy a bottle and sniff it, ๐Ÿ˜‚ and if it weren't for liking the PC more, I probably would be.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@Shosh85 I mean I was thinking of sniffing bottles at the store but don't think they would appreciate that. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

@ShortErica @Shosh85 To me, the Paula's Choice Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser kinda smells like banana peel. Not banana, just the peel. There's no banana extract or added fragrance in the cleanser, so I have no idea what's responsible for that scent. ๐Ÿ˜„ And honestly, I kinda like it. Something about it is nice in the morning, when I'm waking up in the shower.

It's weird that the CeraVe cleanser suddenly has a scent. If the ingredients are the same and the formulation hasn't been juggled (maybe there's now a higher % of one ingredient, I dunno)... hmm. I wonder if the scent is from the bottle, not the productโ€”if CeraVe now uses a different kind of bottle. Even if it looks the same, it might be made of something different than the old bottles. Whatever's causing it, if the scent bugs you, then it makes sense to switch cleansers. ๐Ÿ™‚ But yeah, the PC cleanser definitely has a scent.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge - PART II

Thanks for the scent analysis @WinglessOne. I'm sad something that was a staple for me needs to be switched but you're right, if it bugs me it's time to do it.
