Hello Lovelies! As we make our resolutions and check them twice, I thought we could start a skincare version of the Weekly Challenge. Many of us wanted to use more masks, shop our stash and focus on our Skin so hopefully this thread will be an inspiration to do just that. Join us with pictures and comments down below.
Masking Spreadsheet Info
Hello every, @eshoe and I are very happy to present the BIC Masking Challenge Spreadsheet. The idea is to have an easily searchable database of masks and reviews as a reference point when we are considering our next purchase. Data integrity was important to us so instead of everyone inputing data directly into the spreadsheet where theoretically information could be deleted or edited we have the questionnaire. It should take no longer then 1-2 minutes with the option for a more detailed review (which you can copy from your post on this thread).
Remember the idea is not to replace this thread. I personally love reading, commenting and interacting with all you amazing women here and that shouldn’t change. This would just be on top of that. Hopefully the more people that partake in this, the larger database of information we’ll have for reference. It will be extra effort in the beginning but then we would only need to input any new mask we’ve tried.
Additional Info:
Since we aren’t allowed to post links, please PM or myself for it. You will also find this information on the original post so you don’t need a database to search for this post!
Incase you need some help to filter/search results, try this :-
Search Specific Word or Phrase —> Edit -> Find and Replace -> Search Word
Filter/Organize by Columns --> Data -> Create a Filter -> Select Options
There are 2 ways to edit a response:
1) Once you have completed a survey, click on the "Edit Your Response" link on that page. Once this page is closed, the only way to make a change is to:
2) PM @Aaliaa or @eshoe to make the change directly in the response spreadsheet
Thanks @eshoe for putting this together!
Rules
Each week there will be a new Masking Challenge posted. It will range from type of mask, brand specific week or fun challenges along the way.
Choose mask, take picture (with mask on or before), place mask on face, relax and dream of the next Sephora purchase you want to make, remove mask for healthier skin.
Have Fun!!
P.S. If you have any suggestions or challenge recommendations feel free to message me and I'll add them to the list.

Merry Masking!
@byme4u @veronika23 @quspork I think that’s how you’re supposed to use it actually! I spoke to a Laneige rep in store once, and she told me the lip and sleeping masks aren’t to replace a moistuizing product, it’s meant to seal it in and prevent it from being evaporated off your face overnight! Note: I very rarely use it that way LOL, especially the face and eye sleeping masks because it just feels like too much, but that’s what she said 🤷🏽♀️
@cianni adding this to mask hacks for the week coming up later this year, great info👍🏼
You're right, @cianni, regular facial sleeping masks are definitely supposed to be used that way. They go on top of whatever moisturizer you're using for the evening. That's great that the salesperson confirmed that the lip mask should be used the same way! I certainly find it more useful when used in conjunction with something else, ha!
@cianni Thanks so much for sharing this! I always felt as though the lip sleeping mask just didn't moisturize as much as I'd like. Maybe I'll try it with an oil under it going forward!
Good info @cianni, thanks for sharing!!! I remembered not liking the sleeping mask much (I'm in the minority, I know!) but I can't remember how I used it. If I come across another I'll have to hang on to it and try it that way.
Ohhhh!!! That's very good to know!!! Thank you @cianni!!! 🙂
I'm right there with you on the lip mask, @byme4u. You could try layering it over a more hydrating balm and use the Laneige to "seal" that product in. I do that from time to time and find that it works pretty well that way!
I sometimes use my HG lip balm and slap on a good amount of that mask over... That way I have something on my lips all night long. 😄 Congrats on getting to rookie III!!!! @byme4u
Congratulations @byme4u!!!👍🏼 Love that Laneige too, it’s one of my favorites 😊
Good morning everyone and hurrah for another weekend! This week’s mini survey poses a question that @cianni wants to know, and something many on this thread have been including in posts: What ingredients do you try to avoid when masking? I will leave it up for the weekend, then tally the votes again on Sunday to post. Until then, happy masking!

...and finally, some masking!
After double cleansing, I applied a 3:1 Concoction of Ceramic Slip blended with Good Genes. I left it on for about 15 minutes and rinsed. I’ve tried this a few times now, and I cannot tell what it is supposed to be doing for my skin. Lots of people love Good Genes, I think I just might be doing something wrong! I have no idea what to grade this yet.
The Cosmic Calm was something I picked up at of all places, Party City. Sometimes I just try not to take myself so seriously, and my curiosity got the best of me. A quick check of the ingredients and I didn’t recognize anything awful. No scent, a watery serum, very tiny mask-might be good for the tween set. However, I happened to use my Caudalie serum that night, and noticed on the bottle was written “No parabens/no phenoxyethanol.” I picked up the sheet mask again and indeed, close to the end of the list was phenoxyethanol. So, with a grain of salt...
That being said, I wouldn’t repurchase as it gets a solid C for poor fit/no visible results.
Followed up with the usual La La and A++ YTTP. I mustered up the strength to brave the blue tansy scent and applied Luna last. It seems like it may have tempered over time, it wasn’t as strong as I remembered. Woke up to soft, hydrated, and very happy skin, so skipped the makeup today, yay!
Info about phenoxyethanol:
Phenoxyethanol is a widely used synthetic preservative that has global approval for use in all cosmetic products in concentrations up to 1%. It’s often used in even lower amounts, such as when combined with other ingredients like ethylhexylglycerin. In this case, lower amounts of phenoxyethanol can be just as effective as the maximum approved amount.
Phenoxyethanol is incredibly versatile: It works in a large range of formulas and pH ranges, has broad spectrum activity against many pathogens you don’t want multiplying in your skincare products, is stable, and is compatible with many other preservatives used in cosmetics.
Phenoxyethanol has become the new skincare ingredient to be demonized by various retail/natural marketing cosmetic companies and websites. The controversy is similar to the absurdity over paraben preservatives. Parabens were made evil in skincare products because of studies showing they are endocrine disruptors, but parabens don’t have that property when they absorb into skin. Much like parabens, phenoxyethanol being a problem in cosmetics is based on research that has nothing to do with skincare. The negative research about phenoxyethanol is not about the cosmetics-grade version. That’s a big difference. Even plant extracts have to be purified when they are removed from the ground and put into skincare products. No one wants worms, fertilizer, heavy metals, and dirt in their products. Phenoxyethanol is the same situation, it is purified before it is used in cosmetic formulations.
As with many cosmetic ingredients, concentration matters. A 100% concentration of phenoxyethanol comes with some scary warnings. For example, the Safety Data Sheet on this preservative describes it as harmful if it contacts skin, is inhaled, or gets in to the eyes. Animal studies have shown it causes reproductive and developmental toxicity—no wonder some panic is occurring! As it turns out, the animal studies were about mice being fed large doses of this preservative, not about it being applied to skin, absorbing, and then causing reproductive or developmental harm. If you fed mice mass amounts of lavender or other essential oils, they would suffer terrible consequences.
The rest of the alarming studies are about using phenoxyethanol in full-strength or atypically high concentrations, not the amounts of 1% or less used in cosmetic products. Think of it as the difference between taking one sip of wine versus chugging several bottles at once!
Back to topical use, research has shown that compared to many other preservatives, the incidence of a sensitized or allergic reaction to phenoxyethanol applied as used in cosmetics is rare. But the truth is all preservatives, even the natural ones, carry some risk of sensitizing skin. That’s because preservatives of any kind are meant to kill fungus, bacteria, and mold and that can negatively impact skin. Ironically, in order for natural preservatives to be effective, they have to be used in much higher amounts than synthetic preservatives, typically up to 10%. This higher amount poses irritation and sensitizing problems for skin, so natural preservatives aren’t a slam-dunk replacement for synthetics, not even close.
An interesting factoid: although the phenoxyethanol used in skincare products is synthetic, this chemical occurs naturally in green tea, just like parabens occur naturally in berries and other natural foods.

Sorry about the Cosmic Mask @eshoe 🙁 ! Thanks for the info about phenoxyethanol ! You can always rely on the LaLa Retro cream to moisturize your skin! LOVE IT ❤️ ! No wonder that it won so many awards!
$1 and 15 minutes of hydration, not terrible @itsfi😉 Kissu to the rescue!
Thanks for all the detail @eshoe - now Boss II - how did I miss this?
I understand being aware and cautious of what ingredients you use but sometimes I just laugh and think of dihydrogen monoxide since anything can be scary
Omg @ShortErica hahaha this has got me laughing at my desk😂😂
😆🤣 You know @ShortErica, I tell my daughter just this: even water can cause the things we try to avoid on a daily basis. Bad stuff is everywhere, we just try to minimize our exposure as much as possible.
Oh gosh @eshoe, you just reminded me that I've tried that combo of the ceramic slip and GG a few times before. I actually quite liked the ceramic slip as a cleanser. I haven't tried the new version but I might need to look at getting it again. Actually no. No, I don't need to look at another cleanser lol... but maybe... oh geez....lol
