Looking for a new skincare routine

Hey there! I'm a mom of 2 boys (2-1/2 year old and a 2-1/2 month old). I’ll be going back to work at the end of the month and looking for some suggestions on a new skincare routine. Have been using Dermalogica but it’s not doing as well as it used to; went in for a facial and the facialist mentioned that it might not be a bad idea to switch up my routine or products every so often. My skin is normal for the most part, notice that it’s getting a little bit drier this winter. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous, are there any products that you are using that you want to keep in your routine or are you looking for a completely new set of products?

That's a good question.  I really do like the couple of vitamin C products from the line that I have - MAP-15 Regenerator and Multivitamin Power Firm.  My skin seems to respond to them pretty well (the regenerator has helped with lessening some dark spots and my eye area feels softer and firmer with the power firm product)  But, I've notice that the moisturizer is not enough - it may be that it's winter, but I feel like my skin is getting more textured and more dry in certain areas before the cold set in.

It sounds like you're covered with your Vitamin C product (Dermalogica Map-15 Regenerator) and your eye cream (Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm). With those 2 items as part of your skincare routine, incorporating a couple of cleansers, an exfoliant, a moisturizer, a sunscreen and a couple of masks should round out your morning and evening skincare routine quite nicely.

In terms of cleansing, I am a fan of the doubling cleanse in the evening; that is, using an oil based cleanser to break up and remove sunblock and makeup followed by a water based cleanser to remove any residue and cleanse skin.  For an oil based cleanser, I recommend Clinique Take the Day Off Balm and for a water based cleanser, Youth to the People Age Prevention Superfood Cleanser.  Clinique TTDOB is a simple, no frills first cleanser – it’s gentle, unscented and does an excellent job at removing sunblock and makeup.  The Youth to the People cleanser is packed with antioxidants, great for everyday and leaves no residue.

You mentioned having some texture to your skin recently.  Do you exfoliate regularly? Oftentimes, exfoliating 1-2 times per week will help to slough off patchy, uneven skin and dryness.  There are two kinds of exfoliants, chemical and physical.  First Aid Beauty Radiance Pads contain lactic acid and glycolic acid – these are very gentle and work well with my sensitive skin; a good entrée into chemical exfoliants.  If you prefer more of a manual exfoliation, Tatcha Rice Powder Enzyme is a good one.   The Tatcha enzyme does not contain any acids so if your skin is sensitive to acids, you may prefer the physical exfoliant.

As for moisturizer, I recommend Belif Moisturizing Bomb. It’s a gel-cream formula, applies smoothly, absorbs well and is hydrating without clogging pores.  If your skin is normal and veers slightly dry in the winter, this moisturizer should work for you.  If you get very dry, you might want to consider either mixing an oil, Tarte Maracuja Oil, with the Belif moisturizer before applying to your face or using Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream as your moisturizer.

Re: Looking for a new skincare routine

OMG!  Thank you for taking the time to put this all together - wow!  I picked up both cleansers, the Radiance pads and the Belif moisturizer.  The woman at Sephora said it was one of their best selling moisturizers.  I tested it at the store and it felt great going on - and was just as you described it.  Used that last night and this morning and so far, it's been great - no pilling, my skin doesn't feel as dry as when I used my other cream.  Thanks again @Anonymous! You're a doll!

Re: Looking for a new skincare routine

You're so welcome @Anonymous; happy to help!  Good to hear the Belif moisturizer is working out for you.  Hope the rest of the items work out as well.

I forgot to mention, but it sounds like you are already on it, that it's best to introduce products one at a time and test them for a period of time before introducing another one, so that you can see how your skin responds to the particular product and how it performs in conjunction with your other products.

Re: Looking for a new skincare routine

For sure. I'm lucky that my skin is not usually sensitive to most things. For whatever reason, it can be finicky and have reactions when it comes to cleansers but moisturizers and other products are usually not a problem. And anything with salicilyc acid in it - my skin goes nuts when I put that on my face.

I'll tread carefully with the cleansers, definitely. Being at home I haven't worn makeup but I will wear it daily once I go back to work so I'm interested in trying out the cleanser, especially the Clinique one. I've read a lot of good things about it so excited to see if it lives up to the hype.  Will give it a test run next weekend. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Looking for a new skincare routine

@Anonymous, so I wanted to just let you know that both the cleansers you recommended worked! I went with my husband to work dinner last night and had a reason to get all glammed up, so I tried the combination of the clinique balm and the Youth to the People cleanser (my husband likes this one too).  You know, I've always just used one cleanser and thought it was fine. I didn't realize how different my skin would feel with using 2 different cleansers right after the other.  I'll "test drive" this combo again this weekend, but don't think I'll have any problems.

Also, I did start on with the FAB radiance pads today and so far, it seems fine. Thank you so much again; you're fabulous!
