How often do you switch up your skincare products?

A few years ago I finally settled on a skincare brand - I liked the philosophy of the line (in terms environmental friendliness, etc), the products were fun to use, smelled great, and they worked well. I didn't have any luck with them re: sunscreen (it broke me out) and an acne spot-treatment, but other than that, I used the same line exclusively.

...but lately it's almost as if I've become bored with these products. I keep wanting to try different things. I feel like a skincare butterfly or something. And it's not really for any specific skincare reason (I haven't had any skin changes or anything). Right now I have products from 4 different companies that I'm trying out (and I'm about to try one more) - two new moisturisers, a new serum, a new eye cream, along with my regular cleanser and toner. I'm not sure if I'll settle on a new line, or play for a while and then go back to my old, tried-and-true brand.

Anyway, I'm wondering how other people think about their skincare routines. Do you stick with one line for almost everything? Mix and match? Switch it all up regularly? Are there products you would never change? (In my case, I love my toner and don't think I'll ever change it).

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Regarding philosophy, IMHO they hit the skids when they were purchased by Coty. None of their changes seem good to me. Used to use a lot of their product and fragrance. Have stocked up on what i loved that is now discontinued.

You could say i switch it up as i do not use one line exclusively. It is more like mix than match. Get samples of what you think would help with your needs and go from there. Many on BT are goldmines of info and they can help you with specific products. Smiley Happy

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Thanks for the welcome! I do like getting samples to try things out (it's one of the reasons I started shopping at Sephora)!

When I mentioned philosophy up there, I didn't mean the brand Philosophy - I meant the philosophy of the regular brand I was using. I'm sorry I was unclear about it! I haven't used Philosophy yet - but I do have a couple of deluxe samples I'm going to try. I'm sorry to hear that the changes in their products haven't been good.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I've experimented with a bunch of skin care and makeup brands in recent years and just settled into a routine this year.  I keep buying the same brands/products to replenish when I run out.

However, when it comes to hair products, I am constantly changing it up.  I have about 4 different shampoos and probably 10 different conditioners in my shower alone.  I think it's a problem, LOL!  I use a different one each day and never get bored.

I think mixing up your skin care and makeup routine is a good thing, but always have your go-to favorites on hand in case it doesn't work out.  I love that Sephora gives samples so you can try without committing.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I like to switch up the hair care too! I have a few criteria for shampoo, but there are lots of options for me.

It's nice to have a fall-back skincare routine, definitely! I love the Sephora samples as well - so many options! And I've already ruled out a few companies based on the samples.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I used to be the same way- then at some point in the last few months it reversed.  Still using up a good amount of hair products, but my stash is less than half of what it was at its worst (I once counted 26(!!) different conditioners in my bathroom, and I live alone).  I've become so comfortable with reading the ingredients and knowing what works for my hair (protein, protein, protein), and what doesn't (heavy butters/oils), that it's very much limited my hair product wish list.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Hi daisydaisies and welcome to Beauty Talk!

I agree with the posts you've already received Smiley Happy Switching can be great! Sometimes my own skin gets "used to" a certain product and then I go on the hunt for a new one (typical with face serums and eye creams!) I switch my skin care every 5-6 months or so and especially like to do so with my face wash and cleansers.

You don't necessarily have to stick with one line but some people do find better results for their particular skin types- Try out samples, visit stores and see what you like! Don't be afraid to ask for advice on here, like spoiledbrat says there are some super helpful and knowledgeable fellow BT'ers who can give great recommendations too! Smiley Wink

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Thank you! I appreciate you mentioning the serum and eye cream change-ups, especially. These are the products I want to play with the most.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Once I find a routine that works, I try not to switch things up. I use almost all of Kate Somerville's Acne products.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Did it take you a while to find the right routine?

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I have the "grass is greener on the other side" symptom where I'm always looking for something better. After trying about a hundred skincare products, I've finally started to have favorites and start forming a regimen. Right now I focus on finishing up my 60+ mini/deluxe skincare products, after which I will stick to what works for me (with minor/very little experimentation instead of hoarding skincare like crazy, which is what I was doing).

Oh, I switch it up every week or at most every month depending on when I finish my mini/deluxe sample skincare.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I think I'm having some of that 'grass is greener' feeling these days! I'm enjoying the experimentation, but I haven't really found anything I love yet.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I mix & match & change product depending on the season & what my skin is doing.

I'm skincare junkie & always looking for the next best thing. Smiley Tongue

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I like that you listen to the seasons and to your skin!

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Every month, as often as every single week. I'm a VIB Rouge, but my boyfriend ALSO spends that much on skincare products every year. We're both beauty addicts! I like to grab new products to try, samples of face creams, lotions, masks, whatever!

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

Sounds like a lot of fun. Do you have favourites?

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I tend to switch things up more often than I want to. I love samples for that reason. I'll buy something I love, and then they go and change the formula or something and then I have to switch. I have high hopes for this next round of samples. Hehe

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

So annoying when formulas change! I've also been frustrated when a product I really like gets discontinued.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I actually used essentially the same routine (Clinique 3-step) for over 20 years.  Only switched recently and after having skin sensitivity issues I see myself pretty much sticking with with what I'm using now for as long as possible- basically until I feel like it's not meeting my needs anymore.  The sensitivity issues also make me a huge coward about mixing and matching product lines, but I'm trying to work on that a little because I'm still looking for a good anti-aging product that's light enough for my combo/oily skin.

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

I don't have sensitive skin except for my lips. I'm a coward about trying out any kind of new lipstick or lip product because the reactions can be so annoying. I used to love Clinique lipsticks, but I can't use them any more after developing a sensitivity. I'm glad you found a new routine you like!

Re: How often do you switch up your skincare products?

All the time, you need to continuously switch up your products so that you know what is best for your skin. Right now I am using the skin care program</a> which I found at GlamThread here  I read some great reviews on it and purchased it and started religiously following it. Nothing ever has improved my skin this much.
