I think you need to expand on your question a little bit when you ask whether it's "important".

I don't think it's important. Even though I'm Asian, and I understand why people want "brighter" skin (whitening comes off as a little inappropriate in the context of skin, it never sat well with me), I never really "got" it.

I prefer my skin to have a little colour to it, so I don't look like a ghost. I don't care if my tanner skin is viewed as less desirable in the Southeastern Asian community because in the past it been associated with hard labour outside (which is ridiculous).

Do what you want. I don't see it as important because I'm personally only concerned that my skin is healthy, smooth and bright. I'd rather spend my money on obtaining and maintain healthy skin vs. products to lighten my skin artificially.
