Correcting skin damaged by smoking?

I'm only 26 but the skin on my jaw seems loose from 6+ years of smoking.  I have quit smoking, but is there anything I can use to firm up my skin and take away the premature wrinkles cigarettes have given me?

First of all Congrats on quitting! You chose to quit while you are still young so you are in a great position to turn back the hands of time!

Now that you've quit smoking I think it's a great opportunity to embrace other better lifestyle choiced especially inyour daily skincare/beauty routine.

First thing. The BEST way to prevent further wrinkling or damage to your skin is to wear an SPF lotion suited to your skin type of at least SPF 15 EVERYDAY on your face and neck. I implore you even if you don't wear make-up that day please put on your SPF. This can be by way of a sunscreen or Tinted moisturizer or even a foundation but you must put it on.


Secondly look for creams that have ingredients like Vitamin A (retinol), Vitamin C,  hylaraunic acid, vitamin E, collagen boosters and other natural ingredients and anti-oxidants that help to firm, plump, tighten the skin.

This first starts with your diet. Smoking restricts the absorbption of vital minerals and vitamins the biggest ones being Vitamin A and Vitamin C. I highly suggest you incorporate more of this into your diet and also suggest you start getting religious about taking a daily vitamin. Vitamin C runs through the body faster than any other so  you have to replenish often as it is a vital anti-oxidant. Try snacking on oranges, grapes but my fave are cherry tomatoes.


Some skincare suggestions: Some are going to be a bit pricey. Feel free to look for cheaper alternatives from brands like Oil of Olay, Neutrogena, Avon Anew and Jamieson.

If you have issues with acne you may want to avoid this but I suggest at night-time you try layering your skin care using very light thin layers.

This is what i do:


First start with your eye cream and pat that gently under your eyes. (Shiseido)

Then go in with a fast-absorbing serum of your choice ( like the Peter Thomas roth resurfacer or retinol fusion) I also like Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum.

when that is absorbed into the skin, apply a light layer of your favorite night cream to seal it all in. (Bliss or any good night cream really, preferably not one too harsh since you'll be using a Retinol serum. Oil of Olay, Almay all make nice ones).

Your most welcome! Thanks for the heart. Just another tip. retinol is one of those rare skin breakthroughs that will actually give results HOWEVER although there are day creams with Retinol I implore you to only use it once a day as part of your night routine. It is one of those ingredients that if worn during the day HAS to be used in conjunction with an SPF of 30 and I say 8 hours at night while you're asleep will more than suffice. Just something I forgot to mention! Good luck!

Islandqt, You are a saint! Thank you so so much for all this information! I have been using an SPF face cream for about a year now, but I did not know how smoking could affect my vitamin intake. I can't thank you enough! This is all great advice and I can't wait to try it all out!
