Mask of the Week Misc. Info & Previous Year's Links:

To Post:
Each week features a different theme, as well as a letter of the alphabet for coming up with new masking ideas.

Please include the brand and name of the mask you are trying out, as well as a photo if possible. Any other details are greatly appreciated, including scent, if it's an exfoliating mask (include acid info if known), your overall experience, and whether or not you would repurchase. Don't forget to include a grade (thanks to @ShortErica for the idea) to help others along the way.

Most importantly, have fun and merry masking!

Mask Hacks - Here are a few to get started thanks to our lovely BIC-ers, a big thank you for these fabulous ideas!

Trim off long chin and add to forehead for sheet masks

Squeeze tube lip balms (like Bite) into pans and place in magnetic palette

Layer lip sleeping mask (such as Laneige) over regular balm

Derma plane prior to a peel-off mask to ease the pain of removal

Warm water helps remove clay masks quicker than cold

Lay sheet masks flat prior to use so the serum is more evenly distributed

Remove clay/difficult masks in the shower to keep towel clean and removal easy

Use an HA serum prior to trying a mask with alcohol high on the ingredients list

Use a Makeup Eraser to remove wash-off masks

With a detox mask, apply a thicker layer where pores are

Use a resurfacing exfoliating spray (such as Kate Somerville’s Liquid ExfoliKate) before a detox mask to better clear out your pores

Re-use a large sample jar for a blank sheet mask pellet and fill it with essence/toner

Use a nail clippers to trip a mask if scissors are not on hand

2018 Mask of the Week Challenge:

NEW!!! Got an idea for next year's challenge? Let me know! Was there a challenge you'd rather not repeat? Share below, so we can start building the 2021 schedule:

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Yesterday's face mask is on-theme!

I've figured out a way to track who gave me the sheet masks. Sharpie/pen on the back- write their Sephora handle and I will always know who to thank!W- whole foodsW- whole foods

This mask was extra moisturizing, yet it soaked it and didn't remain tacky. I have liked every Whole Foods mask so far! Thanks @eshoe

The Laneige Cica Sleeping mask, courtesy of Sephora, has the typical consistency of a Laneige sleeping mask. It is a while cream that leaves a ....greasy feel on the skin, like their original sleeping mask. The occlusive properties in this are wonderful for keeping moisture in, and my skin felt soft this morning. However, the typical greasy-feel was still there. It did calm my skin. That being said, my skin is really not red, or raging, or irritated at the moment. Just my nose area is red from blowing it from my cold (and this did help in calming that red). That said, it did sting on my red raw nose the other night, as all of my products besides my balm cleaner did. i.e.: It will sting if you have raw skin.
*⭐If you love the properties and feel of the regular Laneige sleeping mask, you will enjoy this even more.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@l8totheparty  All the Whole Foods masks seem to be winners! I've liked the ones I've tried too! 👌

Thanks for your thoughts on the Laniege! It would be interesting to know how it'd do with skin that was more irritated/red. It definitely sounds promising!

Happy to hear you enjoyed both of these!

I hope you're feeling better soon! It does seem to be going around!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Thanks, @Shosh85 ! I hope someone with more irritated skin will speak up. My skin gets more red/irritated in the summer, so the Laneige cica sleeping mask will be tested more fully then 😊☀️

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Oh wow @sonnydee mentioned it too, I always keep a Sharpie nearby now @l8totheparty @PrettyPaint! So helpful.

The Laneige sounds good for your skin. The water sleeping mask wasn’t my favorite but a lot of people love it. Your poor red nose! I hope it’s getting better😊

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@l8totheparty  Oh are you the one who gave the tip about writing stuff on the back with a sharpie??? I remember reading that here but couldn't remember who mentioned that, but thank you! I've been doing that and it has made me much more organized. Plus I like an excuse to use a sharpie. I hope you feel better soon. I know that feeling of having the raw nose - it's the worst. Both masks sound really nice, though.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Oh gosh, this is the first time I've mentioned it, and I just thought of it when I was rearranging my masks, so I thought I'd share.  Surely I wasn't the first to think of this wonderful idea!  😊 It really does help though.  @PrettyPaint

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@l8totheparty  Yes, it's great! I think when I first read about it here, someone said that they make notes (if they have used the mask before) about whether they liked it, tips or length of time to leave it on, etc.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@l8totheparty @Thanks for the review! I haven’t tried this yet so I will have to soon although I didn’t love the original so we shall see

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

It has the same consistency and feel and film as the original, fyi @Kim888

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well @l8totheparty!  I hope your cold goes aways super soon!  I don't think I have heard anyone give a bad review to a Whole Foods mask, so those seem like they're pretty good.  Sharpie on the back of the mask is exactly what I do too!  Smiley Happy

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

I'm intrigued to see how the Laneige Cica holds up again redness and irritation (as opposed to rawness- ouch, hope your nose is feeling better soon!) in the future. It'll be interesting to see how it does, @l8totheparty.

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Indeed, @quspork . I hope someone who has more redness can speak up about the effect on a more irritated face. @quspork

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@l8totheparty I totally copied that from you!! I'm writing names now too 🙌

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Last night's masking, emptying some Deluxe sizes:

Julep, Omorivcza, Kiehl's, Clarins, It's Skin & Jeju:enJulep, Omorivcza, Kiehl's, Clarins, It's Skin & Jeju:en

The KIEHL'S SINCE 1851 - Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Maskis my second favorite of the quartet I tried; the Cranberry Turmeric is hard to top for me. This is pleasant and soothing, especially when chilled. Not much of a scent, easy on the skin - and very similar to consistency to the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Hello FAB Ginger & Turmeric Vitamin C Jelly Mask. I could go for either one.

The Julep lip oil is pretty thin and a nice base after using a lip scrub. I am trying to use this up, oil based products tend to go bad rather quickly and I don't want to waste any more products. The Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm is nice and long-lasting, scentless with just a hit of pink that is not visible when wearing. I would likely not repurchase this as mineral oil is the first ingredient followed a few ingredients down by paraffin. If that doesn't bother you, it's a decent lip balm/mask with a consistency similar to the Laneige.

Before applying the Clarins and the sheet mask, I used one of the Jeju:en Hyaluron Hydrogel Lip Patches. I have only used a couple of these so far, for a couple of reasons: 1) I like to drink. Water, tea, sparkling water - I drink a lot during the day. 20 minutes seems like a long time, although when I typed it out just now, I realize it sounds pretty lame. 2) I live in a house full of talkers. Like, they want to engage in conversation 24/7 (if they could). I made a near-perfect adherence with the lip mask and the sheet mask placed over it and my daughter wants to talk about things - anything. She just wants to converse. Which I realize, is also not a terrible thing and hopefully it continues into the teenage years Smiley Very Happy

The lip mask, ok - I kind of think they are all hype. But this one fits nicely and acts like a little hug for my lips. It also leaves them very soft. Not for plumping, but great for a little extra skin love. I need to use them more often!

Finally, the It's Skin Hyaluron Pump Maxydra Mask. This mask had a very faint scent that faded immediately. I removed the single protective layer, and noticed a slight blue to the mask itself, which may be due to the azulene 13th down on the list of ingredients. There are a LOT of great ingredients, including centella and ceramide 3, besides all of the HA/HA derivatives. After researching this a bit I discovered some cool things about them:

 - Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer. A modified form of skin-replenishing hyaluronic acid attached to a polymer structure that keeps it within skin's uppermost layers longer, allowing for enhanced hydration. Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer is not animal-derived (from Paula's Choice site).
 - Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is a low molecular weight, chemically chopped up version of the naturally big molecule and current IT-moisturizer, Hyaluronic Acid(HA) (from incidecoder).
 - Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate. The very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (<500 Da) reduces wrinkles and improves skin elasticity. While in the epidermis wrinkles are related to lack of hydration, deep wrinkles formed in the dermis are mainly due to radiation UVI that produces free radicals via TNF-alpha (from biomercosmetics).

All of this, besides hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate!

Which are different: “This form (sodium hyaluronate) is less susceptible to oxidation, so it's more stable,” Dr. Geria adds. That stability makes sodium hyaluronate attractive to product formulators. In fact, the dermatologist notes that “almost all ‘hyaluronic acid’ serums will actually contain sodium hyaluronate as the key active ingredient."

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid works at the surface-level to smooth and hydrate, and sodium hyaluronate does the same on a deeper level, which helps reduce signs of aging. “Both forms have advantages and can be used together, depending on the desired effects,” Robinson says. (thezoereport, Ron Robinson, cosmetic chemist).

All that to say, this mask turned out much better than the previous night's It's Skin one - @mrsmouse YES this one was great!!! The fit (no snips necessary), the comfort, adherence - everything was pleasant. I removed it after 25 minutes, when it had just barely started to dry in a few places. There was enough serum in the packet to apply but I was pretty tired and ready for some sleep.  I did not feel any remaining tack, and went on with my routine. I applied the OMOROVICZA - Midnight Radiance Masklast, finishing the jar and
head to bed. I think I am growing to not mind the tack so much; this one leaves my skin feeling a bit sticky but it didn't bother me. It has BHA (salicylic acid) and sand lily which is supposed to help tame dark spots. I did gain a little darker spot after my last skin fiasco, but am guessing this requires long-term use to notice any real difference. A decent mask, though not one I would repurchase as it is pretty $$$ and I have sleeping masks like the YTTP that make my heart sing Smiley Happy

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@eshoe  Great job getting through your DS's! It always feels good to empty something, no matter the size. 👍
The sheet mask sounds wonderful! Thanks for the research on the ingredients! It's interesting that sodium hyaluronate is less susceptible to oxidation. I think I always assumed that and HA were the same thing 🤷‍♀️ Glad you enjoyed it! These mask seem to be all turning out great! 😃

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

I always thought they were the same, too @Shosh85. But then so many of the ingredients just looked like variations of the same thing, I wanted to know why🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s a good ingredient family!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

This blue theme is so pleasing to look at, @eshoe!

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Thank you @qusporkSmiley Happy My new phone’s camera shattered internally so the pics only work in selfie mode...makes getting a straightforward angle challenging🙄

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Love your baby blue theme @eshoe

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

Thank you @lmaster, blue is just so pleasing, I need more blue products lol

Re: 2020 Mask of the Week Challenge

@eshoe  That it's skin mask sounds fantastic! I appreciate all of the detail you provided on ingredients. Also, that is always gratifying getting rid of all the deluxe sizes.
