2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Hello lovely masking mavens! Welcome to the second half of the challenge. Many thanks to the wonderful @Aaliaa for beginning this thread and excited you are here.

To Post:

Each week features a different theme, as well as a letter of the alphabet for coming up with new masking ideas. Feel free to post as frequently or infrequently as you would like, with or without following the challenge; they are guidelines and just something we do for fun. We love hearing about every masking experience, and suggestions are always welcomed!

Please include the brand and name of the mask you are trying out, as well as a photo if possible. Any other details are greatly appreciated, including scent, if it's an exfoliating mask (include acid info if known), your overall experience, and whether or not you would repurchase. Don't forget to include a grade (thanks to @ShortErica for the idea) to help others along the way.

Most importantly, have fun and merry masking!

Mask Hacks -
Here are a few to get started thanks to our lovely BIC-ers, a big thank you for these fabulous ideas!

Trim off long chin and add to forehead for sheet masks

Squeeze tube lip balms (like Bite) into pans and place in magnetic palette

Layer lip sleeping mask (such as Laneige) over regular balm

Derma plane prior to a peel-off mask to ease the pain of removal

Warm water helps remove clay masks quicker than cold

Lay sheet masks flat prior to use so the serum is more evenly distributed

Remove clay/difficult masks in the shower to keep towel clean and removal easy

Use an HA serum prior to trying a mask with alcohol high on the ingredients list

Use a Makeup Eraser to remove wash-off masks

With a detox mask, apply a thicker layer where pores are

Use a resurfacing exfoliating spray (such as Kate Somerville’s Liquid ExfoliKate) before a detox mask to better clear out your pores

Re-use a large sample jar for a blank sheet mask pellet and fill it with essence/toner

Use a nail clippers to trip a mask if scissors are not on hand

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

sounds great @missjeanie  - glad it worked out for you even if it's a little yucky

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

The yuck factor is there for sure, but if I keep seeing results, I'm okay with it lol

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

I think I have a box of these Yadah snail masks, too. 🐌  Love finding good sheet masks in bulk at TJ Maxx, etc. - pricing is a great score! 💗 Wow, you and snail masks have made quite a pair this week, @missjeanie! 😃

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfiI've really been enjoying the results from them!  I'm so glad you've introduced me to them, I can see them being in regular rotation in my routine!  I just love TJMaxx pricing lol... one of my goals this year was to only buy things with some kind of a discount.  If I'm going to buy as much as I do I need to save somehow lol!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@missjeanie, one of things I’m hoping to figure out this year is to pick a handful of masks to have on a regular rotation. I’ll come up with a rotation once I figure out what masks (sheet masks and rinse off) are in the mix. 😉 Snail masks are definitely in the rotation.

Yes!! The buy-if-on-sale/discount rule is a good one! It helps you use what you have (because the amount of stuff I do have doesn’t seem to reflect that I only have one face for all of it 🤣), and your wallet likes you more. 😂  I’ve been on a low buy/lower buy for most beauty things and on an almost no-buy for masks - if I see a ridiculous deal on a mask or skincare product I know I’ll use (usually at TJ Maxx type stores), I’ll pick it up. The low-buy / no-buy gets lifted when I’ve made a significant dent in my current stash (with exceptions for certain sales). I’m moving through my skincare at a really good rate, using up the makeup is coming along at a slower clip. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfiYes!! I'm hoping that through these challenges I can find some good solid easy masks to keep on hand as everyday masks and maybe a few that are a little more pricey for special occasions or specific circumstances.

I went on a low buy last year mostly because I saw how much stuff I had in every category versus how much I was using.  I tried to only repurchase a few staples when I really needed them as opposed to getting excited over launches.  I noticed over the year that I really use the same make up products all the time... I don't need new eye shadow palettes, I use the same 5 types of colours endlessly.  And lip products, that I loved to buy, were sitting unused as I just kept reaching for the easy to toss on tinted balms and stains. I doubt I could use up all my eyeshadow and lipsticks in two lifetimes. But skincare is where I started to get picky. I found that I was using up samples and figuring out what I like and don't need. I also slowed down big time on purchasing just to get a promotion code, especially if it was a bigger gift bag type promo where I knew I wouldn't use half the products.  I'm also at the point of cancelling Ipsy, I think I'd rather just spend the 20$ on products that I actually want.   By forcing myself to wait for a sale at Sephora to make purchases there I'm getting over the excitement of new products and seeing what I still want after that initial launch rush.  So far it's been a good strategy for me, though I do tend to do most of my purchasing at the October/November/December sales anyhow.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@missjeanie, you just described me. 😂🤣 I canceled all but one subscription box and it’s a quarterly box so it’s not every month. This year is about curating the products that will be the workhorses in all the different categories - skincare, makeup, hair care, fragrance, bath and body products. It’s coming along, some categories more quickly than others. Last year, I tried to branch out with makeup to pick up colors I don’t have (ie, a green shadow I could wear and that would pair well with any of the hundreds of neutrals, nudes and browns I seem to be drawn to like a magnet - hahaha 😂)! Now I just need to use them. 🤪

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Right! I like the word curating... we're curating collections that are best for us, instead of just wanting to have all the things!  I've been trying to get rid of 'stuff' that I have in alot of different aspects of my life.  Why do I still own T-shirts from highschool?  That was 20 years ago!! and I don't even wear them!!  lol.. time to work more with what I really love and get rid of the clutter!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Yes, yes and yes @missjeanie! The clearing out the clutter is a good first step. I'll be interested to hear about what ends up being part of your curated collection.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfiit's been a slow process for me, so far I'm only really culled my eyeshadow and foundation selections.  I'm down to maybe 4 or 5 foundations (two that I'm trying to pan and wouldn't buy again), and I've got some random singles to pan, but I'm down to pretty much only Viseart and MUFE shadow palettes.  I just wasn't using things the way I should have been, I only really wear mattes, and now my nieces have a nice pile of make up to play with when they come over lol.   Not to say that I won't try any other things... but I'm just getting more selective.  Skin care is where I have a hard time.  I'm down to mostly Drunk Elephant for my full size products, I know they work well for me.  But again, I still want to try new things... always looking for something even better that will give me that perfect 'photo shopped' skin.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

That's fantastic @missjeanie! I don't know about it being a slow process; to me, it sounds like you've gotten a lot done! Paring down eyeshadows and foundations is a lot and that is so great that you're at 4 or 5 foundations. Yeah, there's always the pull of new products; I think that'll always be there in one way or another, but once you have a core group of products you love and know work for you, I think it's easier to be more selective of what new products you sample or test out.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfiPreach!  It's taken about a year to pare down to where I am now... It'll be an ongoing one for me to get down further for sure, but I'm in for the long haul with beauty anyhow so might as well enjoy the ride and the process!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Oooh I will keep this in mind if I come across a box @missjeanie. Did you post it when you first bought it on the TJ Maxx thread? I remember seeing someone post and being so jealous 😄 I ordered one off of Facetory (like @heartsmyface) when I found it browsing the site not long afterwards. Anyhow, if I spy a box, I’ll let you know😊

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@eshoe @I did! @itsfi and I had been talking about snail mucin after I saw her use a mask and I think I ended up seeing this one just a week or two after that. I know my TJs hère had several boxes when I was there on Monday so there might be some left! At that kinda deal who could say no?

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

I just love snail mucin @missjeanie ! The Yadah mask sounds great! I’ll have to find some... 🐌🐌🐌

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@keana1Absolutely!  I'm loving the snail juice so far and these could be very easy to use up!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

I’m a big fan of snail mucin @missjeanie ! I even love having snails as an appetizer ( with garlic butter ) ! Lol 😂! Yummy 😋

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@keana1oh my... lol that's too funny!  I was thinking earlier that the snacks/food talk was down this week on the masking thread with gross week but I guess with the caviar and escargot there's always one or two who are thinking about it !! I can't say as I've ever had escargot, I've been a vegetarian for about 35 ish years now, I always imagine them to be like sauteed mushrooms, kinda slimy, take on the taste of whatever you cook them in, and a bit squishy to eat?

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

They’re not slimy at all @missjeanie ! Just a little bit rubbery, it depends on their size! Even if I wanted to be a vegetarian, I just wouldn’t be able to survive! There are so many things that I can’t eat ( I have IBS ), I hate soy, anything soy related! It would be a death sentence for me! I applaud you for being a vegetarian for 35 years, WOW!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@keana1no applause needed, I'm a horrible vegetarian in that I don't eat healthy... People always think i'm super healthy... really I eat nachos at least twice a week and love deep-fried.  I was a Pastry Chef for years before I went back to school and I probably ate fresh bread with cheese as a meal more often than any one person should. I was just a stubborn kid who thought cows were too cute to kill.  Now it's all habit for me.  IBS would make it really difficult for sure.  With such a limited list already, theres no need to cut it back further if you don't need to.  Are escargot rubbery in the way people say calamari is?

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

They have the same consistency in general, although when calamari are well prepared they aren’t rubbery at all @missjeanie ! You have to remove the very thin membrane that surrounds calamari before you cook them to make them tender. I don’t eat anything that’s deep fried, it’s not part of our regular French Canadian diet except for poutine! LOL 😂! I know that in certain areas they love fried anything! Fried Oreos, Twinkies ( I might have misspelled them ? ) aren’t my thing! But I love cheese, Camembert, Swiss, St-Andre, Brie... I can go on and on about cheese but I don’t eat bread or crackers with them, no wine either! As a Pastry Chef you must have made great desserts, croissants, chocolate mousse etc... My uncle was a Chef also but he was specialized in sauces ( Saucier ). All this makes me hungry! 🥐🧀🌮🍱🍮🍫🥮
