2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Hello lovely masking mavens! Welcome to the second half of the challenge. Many thanks to the wonderful @Aaliaa for beginning this thread and excited you are here.

To Post:

Spoiler
Each week features a different theme, as well as a letter of the alphabet for coming up with new masking ideas. Feel free to post as frequently or infrequently as you would like, with or without following the challenge; they are guidelines and just something we do for fun. We love hearing about every masking experience, and suggestions are always welcomed!

Please include the brand and name of the mask you are trying out, as well as a photo if possible. Any other details are greatly appreciated, including scent, if it's an exfoliating mask (include acid info if known), your overall experience, and whether or not you would repurchase. Don't forget to include a grade (thanks to @ShortErica for the idea) to help others along the way.

Most importantly, have fun and merry masking!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

It’s definitely strange and something I wasn’t expecting to discover, @Kim888! I was just trying to figure out how velvet grew in the first place 😂

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@eshoe The Goo & Tao Beaute masks sounds so interesting. I'd never heard of deer antler velvet before! Thanks for the info on that! Sounds like a pretty decent mask, despite the weirdness 😉

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

I read that quickly as ‘despite the wilderness’ @Shosh85, it’s really time for me to slow down😄 Yeah when I saw Velvet Extract on the list of ingredients I thought ‘whaaaaa????’ Like those black velvet paint by numbers things came to mind. I could have sworn velvet was a fabric, not a plant....little did I know. And so much better off I was before knowing!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@eshoe oh, the things we learn! 😂🦌 This Thread has definitely been educational for me! 😆👍

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Me too, @Shosh85! I just double-checked the little Facetory card that comes with the sub, as they give a little detail about each mask. They touted the HA and licorice root in this one...personally I think velvet extract is way more interesting 😄

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Spoiler
Not within the theme, but I was excited to try one of the sample of Omorovicza I got. This is the Ultramoor Mud Mask. It did have quite the alcohol scent I must say. Overall I thought it was a nice mud mask - it dried down fairly quickly which was nice, but I didn't think it was particularity special. It was also super drying. It's so hard for me not to take cost into consideration when I give grades -- Like probably a B+ without cost but I definitely still prefer the Charlotte Tilbury and Volition mud masks.

Next for H week I have the After Shower Look Intensive  Hydrating Mask - I will say this is probably one of the best fitting sheet masks I've used. It just fit super my face well, especially considering it was a 2 piece mask. It was a gel one which is always super hard to get on, but it's nice once it's on. I did not find it particularly hydrating though. It felt nice and hydrating while it was on, but after I took it off I still felt like I needed more. This would be a great after sun mask. Give it a B+ as well.

Lastly, not a mask but the Good Molecules Hyaluronic acid serum. I just mostly wanted to share because I am very impressed with the brand (got the peptide serum in my lucky bag and traded for the eye serum and I ended up buying this). I love this serum - it's super hydrating and has an awesome consistency. Great for when my skin feels dry. And just when you compare to other brands that are also less then $10, this just feels way higher quality. Totally giving it an A

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Hyaluronic acid serum..ooo..thanks for sharing that even though it isn't a "mask" @Kim888. Now I'm curious about it, especially for $10.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@Kim888I was wondering if I'd hear any reviews for the Good Molecules products.  I saw them in the lucky bag thread and was curious how they'd be.  Good to hear such good reviews!

oooo awesome about the good molecules @Kim888 I received the eye serum, so this is great info

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@Kim888, the After Shower mask sounds like it’d be great in the summer or to pack on vacation. Thanks so much for sharing about Good Molecules hyaluronic acid serum. I do love HA serums and I’ve seen that brand on Beautylish and wondered about it.

yup you are right @Kim888. AD is #7. still wonderful for my skin-oily, acne prone. Kinda surprised it's in there. But isn't there mineral oil or something in la mer?🤔 guess you never know until you look even if you are paying an arm & a leg.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@Kim888 Sounds like a great group of masks! The After Shower Mask seems like it would be a great after-the-sun mask! It's always a plus when a mask fits great too!

I haven't heard of the Good Molecules serum, but it sounds like something I'd like, especially because of the super hydrating part. 😉👍

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Oooh @Kim888 the Good Molecules sounds great, thanks for the review! Something that inexpensive is definitely worth a shot, sounds like you made the right tradeSmiley Wink

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@Kim888 ohhh thanks for the review of the Good Molecules! I remember seeing some debate about it when the lucky bags came out because it was so new. That’s such a great price for a quality product!!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

A little two for one to kick off my masking this week, and to make up for last week! To honour “gross week”, I followed in @itsfi footsteps and tried a placenta mask! This is the Clear Turn White - Placenta. Because my skin is still SO dry from some dermatologist cream that will be in my life for the foreseeable future, I threw in a sample of the KIEHL'S SINCE 1851 - Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Maskbecause I’m definitely in need of something to use overnight (taking suggestions if anyone has something other than the laneige sleeping mask, which I already know I love), plus H is for Hibiscus!

Spoiler
like the other clear turn masks I’ve tried so far, this one is a thick sheet mask, almost a bio-cellulose type of texture, that is saturated with serum but isn’t drippy. This one felt a little drier compared to others I’ve tried (I believe the collagen and vitami C ones so far). The fit was terrible - so much extra space where I didn’t need it, but some pressing and folding made it work. It didn’t adhere super well because it was a little on the dry side, so I laid in bed watching tv to ensure it stayed in place. It had a light pleasant scent that was fresh. No extra serum in the packet. The instructions stated to leave it on for 10 mins but I left it until it felt super dry, around the 35 minute mark. It was a little tacky after removal but my skin felt fresh and bright. Not sure about the firmness, but I definently felt “lustrous”!! I’d give it an B+/A- just because the fit was off for me, and it was a tad dry, but not unbearably.

i has pretty low expectations for the Kiehls because I haven’t heard much about it, and I’m always pretty skeptical about masks that claim to firm overnight. That being said - WOW. At first i didn’t like it. It was definitely ginger scented, and all I could think of was the ginger that comes with sushi. It also was thicker than I thought it would be. It came out in an opaque cream consistency that reminded me of a soft clay mask that doesn’t dry down if that makes sense. It dried down a bit where I couldn’t move my face too much without feeling that tension of a clay mask. I didn’t mind it because I was going to bed although I did switch out pillow cases in case it made a mess (it didnt). This morning it still needed a bit of extra attention to remove but oh my god my face hasn’t felt so soft in a while! I couldn’t stop touching it haha. I know it’s for forming, but I found it more to have a softening and plumping effect overnight. It wouldn’t be my first choice for hydration necessarily, but A for sure because I couldn’t get over how gorgeous my skin felt!!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Brava to you @cianni for giving a placenta mask a try! If not for the 'gross' theme, I'm not sure I would have ever tried that mask, or any of the masks I've been using this week, for that matter.

As for sleeping masks, have you tried the GLOW RECIPE - Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask? They also have a set with a cute sleeping mask - GLOW RECIPE - Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask Set. I've found that one to be very moisturizing. Or, sometimes I will use the GLAMGLOW - THIRSTYMUD™ Hydrating Treatmentas an overnight mask. If it's really cold out or if my skin is super dry, I'll mix in a drop of rosehip oil to the ThirstyMud.

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@itsfi thanks for the sugggestions! I have some samples of the glow recipe watermelon which I have saved for later in the challenge. Have you tried that one? If the consistency is the same (or the results) then I’ll try that sample first before committing to the avocado, which sounds a little more appealing to me compared to the watermelon

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

@cianni, I have tried the watermelon sleeping mask. It has a different consistency than the avocado mask. The watermelon sleeping mask is lighter and thinner in texture and consistency, feels more like a gel. The avocado sleeping mask has a cream consistency.

I could wear both year round but with the avocado, it means using a lighter hand in the summer months, and with the watermelon, it means making sure I have lots of other layers of hydration (essence, serum, moisturizer) before I apply the sleeping mask. If I were to pick one, I would pick the avocado melt. It works better for my skin (dehydrated-dry in winter and part of fall; dehydrated-combo (oily nose/chin) in spring/summer).

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Thank you for all the detail @itsfi ❤️ My skin type sounds more like yours, so the avocado seems like it’ll work better for what I need. Also I can never resist a cute eye mask.. couldn’t tell you why 😂Thank you!!

Re: 2019 Mask of the Week Challenge!

Hahahaha! 😂😂 That eye mask is adorable! If I didn’t have a full size of the avocado mask already I would have picked that set up. I may purchase it as a bday gift for a friend with dry skin - someone needs that adorable eye mask in their life! 😉

love your pink nails!! @cianni 😍 oh my! how long did you...
