Let's keep this thread on topic!
Ulta points refresher (because yes, it is that complicated):
Item #1 - $53.50
Item #3 - $108.50 (and is eligible for a certain item/brand 5x multiplier)
* There is also a 5x all purchase multiplier and you are platinum so you get 1.25x
Total Spent - $162
Base Points Earned - 162
Platinum .25x Earned - 41 (162 * .25 = 40.5, and rounding up)
5x All Purchases Earned - 648 (it ends up being 4x because you don't count the base points)
5x Item/Brand Earned - 434
Total Points Earned - 1285
Links are not allowed. In lieu of links, please read this:
Please add product id numbers and sku numbers so people can find items on ulta.
Just to clarify, there is an item number that Ulta lists on the website, right under the picture of the item.
The product id is the number given to the item in the URL. So Ulta's site follows this formula of having the url and then the very last part of the url is "productId=xlsImpprod" followed by an 8 digit number. If you use that "productId" number you can get to the page of any item on ulta.
It's not a search, but the direct url to the page.
Click on any product, and then view the url in the address bar. It will look like this: ulta's website (not using the actual domain because BT admins don't like that) /prep-prime-fix?productId=xlsImpprod15921204 Replace the 8 digit product id of the item you want to see with the id of the product you're looking for.
My very unofficial Ulta point multiplier to approximate percent discount chart:
(This is a number where I use the multiplier to divide by 2000 to see how many dollars I would have to spend in order to redeem a $125 reward. E.g. 2000 points divided by 1 point multiplier means I have to spend $2000 to get the $125 reward. Adding how much I had to spend ($2000) + the reward ($125), and then using the reward ($125) to divide the total purchase ($2125), I get a discount of approximately 6% based on the total purchase. Note: the total purchase is based on the concept that you are spending just enough to reach the next $125 reward and combines the reward value with how much money you had to spend to get that reward.

Hold onto your Ulta points; Chanel makeup products are coming to Ulta! News via the website seekingalpha and a summary at Musings of a Muse.
There's also an article at racked dot com about it.
Quoting the CEO on the earnings call where this was announced: "Finally, we’re thrilled to announce a prestigious addition for 2018 — Chanel Beauté. Following our long-standing partnership with Chanel offering their iconic fragrances in hundreds of our stores, we are honored to introduce Chanel Beauté in a small number of Ulta Beauty doors this year. This will be an edited assortment featuring a Chanel-branded makeup station with the first Chanel store opening in Westport, Connecticut, in just a few weeks."
Starting off with one store, and with it going into just a "small number" of stores, I'm not sure I'd hold my points for Chanel quite yet. There was no mention of it going online (and Chanel fragrances are not online, so I kinda assume that will be the same for the cosmetics), so it may be a while before we can actually pay for Chanel with points (nope, I'm not traveling to CT to do that lolol). It's an awesome move though, and I hope it does well and expands to more than just a few locations (or goes online)!

@Loretta55 Go for it! It's nowhere near close enough to me to be worth it, but if it is for you, that's an awesome way to spend some points! 😄
@RGbrown Once the weather gets warmer it will be a good road trip. It is only a one hour drive for me.
@Loretta55 16 hours for me (which actually isn't quite as far as I thought it was, but still...a bit much just for Chanel lol)
@RGbrown Westport, Ct. is one of the richest zip codes in the US. I guess I am not too surprised to see that store as their “test market”.
I was wondering if someone could help me. My rewards points for my cart seems off. If I follow the formula in this thread, it definitely is.
Right now my cart = $184.93.
The items all qualify for a 5x brand multiplier.
I also am eligible for the 3x Platinum muliplier.
I also have my birthday 2x multiplier.
Ulta says I should get 1525 points with that purchase, but that seems low.
Thanks in advance.
That's correct
All totaled, those multipliers equal 8.25x
5x means 1 base plus 4 bonus
3x means 1 base plus 2 bonus
2x means 1 base plus 1 bonus
Plus your .25 platinum bonus
But in reality you can only earn base points once, so you add it up like this:
5x + 2 bonus (for the 3x) + 1 bonus (for the 2x bday) + .25x (plat bonus) = 8.25x
8.25 x 184.93 = 1525.6725
@RGbrown Thank you so much lady- I guess I'm being greedy and wanted the order total x 10!
Wouldn't that be sweet?! I hate that Ulta presents it the way they do...makes it a bit more confusing than it needs to be 😐
@RGbrown True, but to get back almost half, or half, of what you spend is pretty good! I'm getting spoiled.
@Ispend2much6 so true...8x is right at 50% back, which is definitely nothing to sneeze at! Can't get that anywhere else, for sure 😄
@RGbrown@Ispend2much6I would look at 8.25x like this:
2000/8.25 = $242.42 (to get $125 back)
$242.42 + $125 = $367.42 (total purchase)
$125 / $367.42 = 34% off total purchase
I would say 8.25 points is like 34% off the total purchase.
To get 50% off with points I think you would need to get 16x<.
2000/16 = $125
It's possible during their point week in August. I saw something last year where it was like 10x points for being alive (or something like that) and then 5x for lipsticks from particular brands. If you also had your birthday month it would be possible to have the 10x + 5x + 2x + 1.25x = 16.25x
The easiest way to think about the multipliers is the first one counts 100%, and then the subsequent ones you have to deduct the base point from.
@itscarinThanks for the info. I'm still not good at finances and numbers. : ) It's such a sweet deal.
You and I come out to the same numbers in different manners. I didn't say 50% off, I said 50% back, which is different.
$200 * 8x = 1600 points
1600 / 2000 = 0.8
0.8 * $125 = $100 worth of points earned with a $200 outlay, or 50% back on what I spent.
I know I still have to include the $125 when I spend the points (well, $100 in my example since that's all I earned in this particular scenario, but of course I'll be spending it $125 at a time) if I want to calculate the total savings, but that puts me at your 34%.
Since I'm typically not earning points in chunks of 2000, I prefer my method to see exactly what I earn from any given transaction. My thought process is simply "hey, $200 of NYX today gets me another $100 of stuff later". For me personally, I don't need to parlay that into overall savings once I spend the the points, as my points have likely all been accumulated at different multipliers.
I also wanted to point out that Ulta does not round upwards. So if an item comes out to 50.75 points you will only get 50 points.
