31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Do you have a box full of perfume vials and/or a vanity covered in perfume bottles? Are you the Goldilocks of perfume, just looking for the perfect signature scent? Do you want an opportunity to post daily about how your perfume of the day smells oaky and smoky with hints of blackberry and currant, like a cigar in a whisky barrel rolling through a Mediterranean orchard on a breezy summer morning?

If you answered yes to any of the above, or you just want to hop on board for the ride, join us for a 31 days of perfume challenge starting January 1st! Some of us from the 25 days of lipstick challenge wanted to continue the fun and exploration, and since many of us have so many perfume samples, we thought this challenge would be perfect. If you don't have 31 perfumes or hate everything that doesn't smell like Meyer lemons and fresh goat cream, that's fine--we're just aiming to use the neglected perfumes we have laying around and incorporate them into our perfume rotations.

And if you want more perfume vials, there's no better time than now to take a peek at Sephora's samples section.

Edit: Anyone can join in at anytime! We're here to support, live vicariously through, and encourage everyone in their olfactory adventures!

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Day 1: Layered Atelier samples in Vanilla Incensee and Orange Sanguine. I smell like a creamsicle in the best possible way!

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Oh that sounds amazing!! I don't have Vanilla Incensee but I love Orange Sanguine.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I am 100% down with this! I have sooo many perfume samples and DS dabbers.

Also 10 points to your house for that description, LOL. I want to smell the perfume that smells like Meyer lemons and fresh goat cream!

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

@JazaChai I love that description too!  I've also read so many funky descriptions for scents that I wouldn't have been totally surprised if it were real. ;-)

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Today I am wearing "Mon Guerlain" so Angelina and I are basically the same person today LOL

Yesterday I tried LUSH Rose Jam solid perfume (not, unfortunately, part of the collection but occasionally made by the LUSH kitchen in the UK which charges exorbitant fees for delivery across the pond and sell out quickly so I've purchased this off E-bay at a significant premium from the original sell price).

My impression of LUSH Rose Jam

I love the fresh, sweet rosy and gourmand smell of the shower gel that smells like rich rose absolute, vanilla, fresh lemon and goji and a sort of candied sugary quality and I was hoping for the same in the solid perfume.  The LUSH solid perfumes are a great deal if you like the scents, they are actually good for your hair, they last forever and they are all under $16CAD.  And when I say they last - they last, I still have some I purchased years ago and have worn pretty often.

Anyhoo - the LUSH rose jam solid perfume is nice and I can tell is it the same scent family but unfortunately in the solid form I am not quite getting the same freshness and rosy-sugar i get in the shower gel.  The lemon is more prominent and there is a slight hint of spice.  Still - I can tell it is the rose jam scent and I still like it but it's just that for some reason - maybe deliberate or maybe a reason that has to do with the different ingredients involved in both formulation that are not perfume related - in any case it is like the same scent with different facets of it highlighted if that makes any sense.

Today, I am trying "Mon Guerlain" I enjoy smelling the heavier Guerlain mainstream scents and I think they are always well-made but I haven't fallen in love with perfumes like "la petite robe noire" etc.  I am VERY impressed with "Mon Guerlain" though - I really like this and I'm surprised that this is something i would definitely buy and wear because it is a little heavier than the kind of scents I am usually drawn to.  It is just so darn well-made and sexy though.

I can really smell the fresh lavender in the opening and it's picked up by what I can tell is a fresh citrus, bergamot the notes say and that sounds about right.  I think the lavender and Iris are dominant in the floral category with the jasmine and another unamed light floral being less distinguishable but nevertheless present.  Iris gives it that powdery quality and  it works well here there is also, I think, a nice radiant floral note in there I can't quite identify though it is nice.  Anyhoo - I quite like this because I always think that a nice lavender that is more floral than herbaceous blends beautifully with sweet tonka/coumarin notes and the Thierry Wasser version of the famous "Guerlinade" perfume-base is one that I really like - tonka, coumarin, almondy marzipan,  sweet rich vanilla and Sandalwood, in "Mon Guerlain" the Guerlinade base works really well with the lavender, bergamot, jasmine and iris in this composition.  Anyhoo, I really like this I think it's quite sexy and it has great lasting power and some considerable though not excessive sillage.  I feel like the dry-down leaves me smelling sweet in a sinful kind of way that I quite like and keep sniffing again and again lol.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Stopped into the new downtown DC Sephora last night and was sniffing the testers in the rollerball section and ended up randomly buying the mini bottle of Derek Lam Drunk on Youth.  I've been on a floral kick lately, just bought Pinrose's L'il Dipper and Tambourine Dreamer last weekend, and this fit in with those nicely.

So far I really like it, it has a very nostalgic feel about it, definitely reminds me of perfumes I wore as a teen in the 90s with its fresh fruitiness, but in a less juvenile and more sophisticated way.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Yesterday I wore Atelier Cologne Blanche Immortelle. The staying power of this one is quite good because I could still smell it on my skin this morning.

This one reminds me of all the good things about Rose Anonyme, but it's less bright and more buttery. There is a bit of that sandalwood that's in Santal Carmin, but it's less strong. There is something smokey I can't explain. Having a hard time describing this scent other than to say that I really love it.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I forgot to post it last night, but I wore Atelier Cologne Gold Leather yesterday and I was *really* impressed.

To me, it smelled like extremely high quality bourbon or whiskey, except without the alcohol flavor. You know: that wooden barrel, a bit of plum. Very warm and comfortable. I would almost call it manly, but because of the plum it was definitely unisex. I love it!

Today I'm wearing Silver Iris, which I had hoped would be similar to Gold Leather, but is not. It smells a lot like Rendezvous: like hippy incense. I'm probably going to try spraying vanilla on top to see if it fixes it, but I suspect it won't.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

More Pinrose layering today. I've been going through the little booklet that came with the rollerball set. I went with Treehouse Royal and Garden Gangster. These two work way better together than separately, and when I looked them up to check out the notes etc., I saw Sephora is no longer carrying them and needed to go to Pinrose direct. I'm not too surprised by this... TR is really, really earthy... almost dirty. It totally reminds me of how you'd smell after a day in the woods! It's probably wayyyyy too much for most. GG is very limey, it is tart and bright. Just like TR, a bit much on it's own.

However, when the two are blended they mellow each other out quite a bit. I wouldn't say it's a feminine blend. What lingers is lime and musk. I think it could be appropriate for a man or a woman. It might remind me a bit of Irish Springs? I do think it's nice, I don't dislike this blend in the slightest, but it may not be for everyone.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Today I wore Commodity Wool.

  • TOP NOTES:  Mandarin, Grapefruit, Apple
  • MID NOTES:  Basil, Fresh Ozone, Cedarwood, Lavandin, Armoise
  • BASE NOTES:  Amber, Haitian Vetiver, Gray Musk, Bourbon Vanilla

I was disappointed with this scent.  As a crocheter, I had secretly hoped it would smell like sheep or wool yarn, but I knew it wouldn't.  The description says it's supposed to remind you of your favorite sweater or wool blanket.  It didn't remind me of either.  It was a rather unpleasant smell, but I can't quite put my finger on what I didn't like about it.  The only "note" that I know I don't really care for is apple.  Oh, well, everyone's nose is different!

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I put on Atelier Cologne Rendezvous this morning and right now I smell like hippy incense. That flowery musky patchouli scent is *overwhelming*. The floral in it reminds me of a car air freshener my parents once had.

This one is a pass for me.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Today I wore Histoires de Parfum 1826.

Notes:  Bergamot, Tangerine, White Flowers, Violet, Cinnamon, Ginger, Patchouli, Amber, Incense, Blond Woods, White Musk, Vanilla

There was something "sharp" smelling when initially sprayed on, but it went away quickly.  After that, it was a subtle warm--not wintry warm, but comfortable warm--scent.  Unfortunately, it didn't last very long.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Today I layered Pinrose Wildchild over Tambourine Dreamer. This is such a lovely blend!! I am always impressed with Pinrose when I wear it, and I haven't found a blend I didn't like. Together, these two are fresh, feminine, and floral, and at the end of the day, what's left is a really nice, subtle musk. It's the sort of scent that's comforting, if a boy let you borrow his sweater and your scent lingered after returning it (yeah right... that sweater is yours now), he wouldn't want to wash it because he'd be reminded of you.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I'm wearing Elizabeth and James Nirvana White today. This one is unique, but familiar. It's quite nice, I need to wear it more often!

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Pinrose Merry maker-I like this but wish it was a bit stronger.I smelled the grapefruit and citrus really strong at first but after a couple hours the citrus faded and I smelled the musk more.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I'd been lazy since my Costa Rica trip (almost 3 months ago)  I need to do this again.  As of the moment, Creed Aventus for Her is top of my wanted list.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I bought three sample sets and a couple of rollerballs plus samples so I'm ready to jump back in!

- Hermes, Terre d'Hermes Eau de Toilette

Notes:  Grapefruit, Woody Notes, Mineral Notes, Green Notes

Ugh!  This stinks!  Need I say more?

- Atelier Cologne, Clementine California Cologne

Notes:  Clementine, Mandarin, Juniper Berries, Star Anise, Sichuan Pepper, Basilica, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cypress

I am disappointed with this scent.  I thought it would smell more citrusy and I thought it would have a stronger scent.  Instead, the scent is barely there and it has no distinctive note(s).  If "nothing" had a scent, this would be it.  If you want a subtle, nondescript scent, this will fill the bill.  I will continue to wear it since it doesn't smell bad.  Maybe I will try layering it with another scent...mmm...

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

Although I'm a high-end perfume lover, CK Euphoria is my all time fave. Nothing can hold a candle to it and I get tons of compliments every time I wear it! and it lasts forever too!!

From Fragrantica:

Exotic floral-fruity fragrance Euphoria was launched in 2005. The fragrance is luminous and luscious like fruits notes of which are captured in it. Euphoria is mysterious and appealing like dark exotic flowers. It invites you to enjoy in joys of life. The main notes are rose hip, Japanese apple, green leaves, Lotus, black orchid, red woods, black violet and amber.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

I lost count on how many perfumes I've tried since starting this challenge, but I think I'm somewhere in the 45-50 range.

I finally tried Miu Miu L'Eau Bleue from my Play box. I think it smells like a cheap candle with a picture of seashells on the jar that you would buy at a dollar store.

Notes: Lily of the Valley, Wild Rose, Akigalawood.

Re: 31 Days of Perfume Challenge

My Box just arrived so I sampled-  MAISON MARGIELA ’REPLICA’ Fantasies: Dancing On the Moon

Aldehyde, Moonflower, Sambac jasmine, Frangipani Tree, Iris, Cashmeran, Accord of Ambergris, Musk.

Ok, Wow!  I don't like!  It reminds of old school Poison but 'louder' because the Frangipani (and, Jasmine)  is very strong.

There is always that 'note' that just reminds me of that 'pink soap' in public restrooms or strongly fruity scented $2 car fresheners.  Almond'ish, Cherry'ish....Candy'ish....Cheap'ish.
