I always have trouble making the shine look nice and getting perfect tips. Any suggestions....

For the tips I'd recommend a special tip brush like this one from Clear Jelly Stamper.

There's a product that you can buy at Sephora that is a latex-peel off liquid that is made specifically for french manicures. You apply it as a barrier for the polish and then paint the tips of your nails, then either use tweezers to peel it off or use your hand. I see alot of professional nail artists use small tweezers, it may help to not smudge the polish. The product is called liquid palissade and it comes is a small box, look for the pictures of a hand painting a perfect french nail.
