Ingrown beard treatments

My boyfriend has trouble with acne and ingrown hairs, and I’m wondering whether anyone has recommendations on effective treatments? I’ve heard exfoliants help, perhaps a mask?

It depends how dense his beard is. Can you see his skin through his beard or no? You would just be treating his beard hair with a mask if you can’t see his skin.

His beard itself is sort of sparse. He keeps it pretty short for work, but most of his issues are at the edges where he neatens it up.
