FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]
What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
I think with everything you've chosen @peculiarzmakeup you are going too have a fantastic week with your capsule. 🏆 Your workhorses are from such stand up brands. I can't wait to hear how it went. 💖
Comfort matters a lot to me as well for the experience wearing and enjoying the makeup I use. I really relate to that sentance.
Thank you so much! It went well! I was pleasantly surprised I like doing things out of my comfort zone I always end up really liking the experience of learning from it. I am so with comfort, it’s so important 🙂 I appreciate it 🙂 @CynthieLu
Ahhh @peculiarzmakeup, your capsule this week has a great mix of products. Merit Stockholm is such a lovely shade and will look so pretty on you. Oh, you like the Kosas foundation? I have that in my stash but haven't (yet) pulled it out to play with. Making a note for a future capsule. 🗒
Thank you so much! @itsfi
merits cream balm blushes are so amazing I’m looking forward to trying the next shade too I just love it I love how full coverage and smooth the Kosas is I hope you enjoy it too!
Interesting approach (r/t foils) @peculiarzmakeup for the week
Thank you so much! I get in my comfort zone and tend to stick to the same products but I think this will be good! I appreciate it 🙂 @danielledanielle
Week 36 - The Workhorses Makeup Capsule
Going with 2 different capsules this week, BIC friends, both in keeping with the "workhorses" theme. One capsule will be made up of my current workhorses - the beauties I rely on. The other capsule will have a throwback element to it, consisting of primarily the beauty treats that were my go-to's around the time I first discovered BIC (then known as BT). It's almost like a throwdown between past and current workhorses, @ather. They're all near and dear to my heart for a host of reasons so it'll be a friendly battle of the beauties. Oh yes, it's going to be fun week ❣️

Primer (Eye): | NARS Pro-Prime™ Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base Original - wondering about this one - I cannot find it in any of my Sephora store - the displays don't even have space holder for it. Wondering if it is being discontinued (?) and a reformulation is in the works. I have spotted them in a few Sephora at Kohl's stores (and, yes, I did, pick up one...okay, maybe two 😉), but is this signaling the end for this GOAT? @danielledanielle |

Eyelash Curler: | Shu Uemura eyelash curler - this is still in my collection and rotation |
Mascara: | Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara - the Lancome waterproof mascaras remain a part of my makeup collection, though different versions have been go to's over the years |
Blush: | Stila convertible color - in Magnolia and Lilium. I used to have all the shades but have either decluttered or donated most of them a few years ago. I have 3(?) I held onto, including these two shades. |

In the early days, the version I used, the original version, had a black rubber end to them; I decluttered the originals since the handles were becoming sticky. |
Amazing capsules, photos, and reflections I really love how you incorporated throwback and current edit. That is such a great way to overview what leads into the current capsules, and such a cool journey to read about. I like how you mentioned how the throwback prompted a thought of what throwback products would be a good fit for now and how current edit shows the continuation of this fantastic journey. Love this! I also love the use of charts for reference in your post. I appreciate you sharing this! ❤️ @itsfi
@itsfi oooooo this is going to be fun! I can’t resist. Good showdown!!! I can’t wait to see which ones stand the test of time! Or use!!
I see so many great items in these lists! I see so many of my own favs. We definitely must be twins on how products work with our skin!!!
@ather, I have a feeling that there will be few, if any, declutters from the current workhorse lineup. It'll be interesting what comes of the products in the throwback edition. 🤔
Oooouuuh, which are favorites of yours as well? I'm curious to know. Yes to twinning!!! 💗
@itsfi Yes twinning! My favs are T28 Sunnydays, Bobbi Brown eyeshadow stick, T28 eye lash curler, Nars concealer and the Ami Cole lip gloss! Basically twinning!
Oh wow you have a fun plan for this week's capsules. Old vs New, this week be an exciting competition! @itsfi
I relate, my skin care has certainly evolved and changed over the years to. If I could tell younger me how to care for her skin, oh the troubles I could have spared myself from. 😅
Your Barneys bag sounds very special and a perfect fit for your capsule. 🩵💙
It was interesting putting together the capsules and listing the various products; very interesting to see how there's quite a few overlap @CynthieLu - if ever there was proof a product is a GOAT 🐐 - it's stood the test of time for so long. Ahhh, Barneys. It had a small beauty section in the city, but it was mighty, for sure. Lots of amazing treasures to be found. It occurred to me that my shopping patterns / habits have changed over the years too. My big beauty hauls centered around the two Barneys bag events, the NM beauty events, the Sephora sales, and the in store preview events, and sometimes, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, though the latter was more about clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories for me. I shop less compared to before. That's not a bad thing, at all. Ha!
I totally used to do something like that too! @itsfi I'd wait for bag deals at the Elisabeth Arden Counter or Shesiedo. They would give you a beautiful bag filled with generous testers. I don't use those products now but they were fantastic just to pricey long-term, I've switched to more affordable mostly 😉
The WorkHorse Capsule
This theme ties in wonderfully with Labour Day ( thank you Unions for the day off 🙏💕) @itsfi I love this theme. 💪
I pulled out some tried and true heavy lifting products to put together for this week's capsule.
💋MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil Extreme Waterproof Lip Liner 606 Wherever Walnut are my favorite lip liners atm. I never tried the previous formula but I'm so impressed with the longevity of this product. The colors I hear are a little different from the originals but not by much.
👁️ Clarins 4D Wonder Brow in shade Brown is my go to everyday eye mascara. It goes on nicely with no clumping ( I use a zig zag method when applying) and I don't get any transferring when it's dry. It's hold's up my entire day like a champ!
🥞Too Faced's Maple Syrup and Pancakes Palette is a surprisingly underrated release imo. The combo of colours and fun browns make this a great for everyday look's or it can be an adventurous palette to play with. I can create so many looks with this one.
🪼Hourglass's Jellyfish Palette truly has it all. A light and deep blush, a bronzer I can sub for contour, two setting powders to lighten the centre of my face and add depth as well and as always a stunning highlighter and an absolutely brilliant one if I want to shine like a star. ⭐
💄Tom Ford's lippies are a staple. I find them to be a No fuss, No muss product. I don't even feel like I need to line my lips when I wear them. They hold up for hours with a beautiful fade. I can rely on these easily in my routine. TOM FORD Lip Color Matte Lipstick Pussy Cat
Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Fiber Eyebrow Pencil 3 # I finally found this early last year and I've been purchasing it ever since. The color and glide and shape of the pencil, they know what they are doing with these.
Amazing capsule. I really love each element and how they tie in together. I saw you post the Maple Syrup pallate before it is so unique, both palates look amazing. It’s amazing to have a go to product I love that the Clarins mascara is a good fit! I am interested in learning more about the “zig zag method” that sounds so neat! I like the term “staple” that you used I find that so helpful when determining or zooming in on what a product does and the components that make it a great fit. This capsule is so yummy! These themes are so well designed and I appreciate you sharing your experiences 🙂 🥞💄🫶 @CynthieLu
Thank you! 😊 @peculiarzmakeup I've seen people post similar ideas about zig zagging and videos on YT but I think it's just whatever works for you personally. For me I start with my top lashes, hold them up and the base gently for a few seconds for lift and then gently zig zag my hand (move it back and forth quickly) as I pull it up and out. It's weird but it really works for me, I figure some mascara days things just seem to clump no matter what you do lol but I like it.
Ooo I love that I might just try that your lashes always look amazing 🤩 @CynthieLu thank you for sharing how to do it
Oh my goodness, those are 2 fun palettes @CynthieLu! Does that Too Faced one smell like pancakes? Or breakfast?
Hourglass puts out some beautiful holiday palettes. The jellyfish one sounds like it has a fabulous mix of cheek and complexion products. It’s great to see the different palette covers that they’ve released in recent years. Do you think you’ll pick up one of this year’s holiday palettes?
I can confirm TF smells Maple-y and sweet @itsfi 🥞
We'll I shouldn't get an HG one this year, I have 2 holiday releases from the last couple of years, and I haven't hit pan anywhere on them. If I'm good I'll wait until next year. Time will tell if I can hold myself to this rationale thinking during thier release. 🙈
Week 35 in Review - I decided to curate a makeup capsule with a throwback theme, going back to Week 19 (that seems so long ago) of this challenge - itsfi's Week 35 Makeup Capsule. Here's what stood out (good and bad) from this past week.
🏆 Top Shelf:
No new product to add to the Top Shelf from this past week's capsules. Lots of likes though.
⭐ Star of the Week:
The standout of the week goes to U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator. My skin held up pretty well this past week; a little redness but no new breakouts <<knocks on wood>>. Shade 03, though sheer enough that it blends in, leans warm and slightly peachy on me. I found that mixing it with First Aid Beauty Bronze + Glow Drops with Niacinamide 1 oz / 30 ml worked wonders - the ratio of one pump U Beauty and 1-1/2 drops of the FAB bronze drops was spot on for my current coloring. Will update the What are your Foundation and Concealer Matches?
🔬 Undecided:
I'm not sure about the Tatcha Mini Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer 0.35 oz/ 10g - it seems like it is better suited for those with oily or combo skin. It was warmer this week but my skin, including my T-zone, remained relatively normal-to-dry for the most part. I'll hold onto this one a little more; summer comes late here (its usually warm right until just before Halloween) so there may just be some oily T-zone days for me ahead for me to put this primer to a true test.
Declutter:
🗑 Wanted the Kulfi Underlined Kajal Clean Waterproof Long-Wear Eyeliner Cheeky Chiku to work for me - it's gotten great reviews from some of the BIC beauties but it and my eyelids / lash line are not meant to be. It could probably do well as an eyeshadow but I'm pretty set with brown eyeshadows for a while, a long while.
August Declutters: It's that time again, wrapping up the month with a look at the declutterd products from this month's capsules.
In addition to the Kulfi gel liner, I also let go of the alleyoop Pen Pal 4-in-1 Touch Up Pen. I found then when I was going through one of my bags. I've had them for too long and they've dried out. I tried using a couple of the sticks and it wasn't comfortable - it dragged and pulled at my skin, which it didn't do the last time I reached for these pens. ☹️
