What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@CynthieLu, the ONE/Size is lovely. It gets less use than my Gucci mist but is nonetheless a solid setting spray in terms of its staying power. Lots of good ones out there to choose from and errr, use up if I have them. lol
Beautiful capsule I admire how you give yourself time to see how a product works for you I have the Tatcha primer and same shade lippie. It’s so neat seeing these capsules I love these themes @itsfi
Thank you @peculiarzmakeup; my skin isn't the same year-round though it seems to be shifting more that way in the last year so a product may wear differently on me in the summer (oily / oilier) than in the winter (much more dry), so I figure it makes sense to try something out during different seasons. Also, I just like to give a product a fair shake unless it irritates my skin or is just not a good fit for me.
Oh, how are you liking the Tatcha primer?
I find my skin to go through changes too throughout the year. I like the tatcha primer a lot I’ve never tried to the powder version but I like the liquid because for me I only have to use a few drops for my face. I’m a big fan of Tatcha 🤩❤️ @itsfi
Throwout? Capsule - All of these are old and didn't get finished. Most of the foundations and concealers shades are not quite right for my skin tone so I will be trying to make them work this week by mixing in bronzing drops or mixing light and dark products together to see if they behave on my skin. Wish me luck 🤞! I am testing some of the other items like the blush, highlighter and lippie. They look beautiful and got forgotten. I wonder if I can make them work 🤔?
***EDIT*** I have a wedding to attend on Saturday and I will not be using these
Review of the Throwout? Capsule
Declutter - Unfortunately I am going to declutter all 3 of these concealers. The Too Faced concealer was a good shade match but I think the formula is way past its prime and was creasing on me. The Sephora concealer was too late so I mixed it with the Kulfi concealer and I experienced more creasing that I would normally with my current go to concealer ( Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer 5.0 EP ). I tried the Kulfi on its own and it is a better shade match for me now than in the cooler months...but I still got an unwanted amount of creasing!
Keep - The MUFE foundation mixed well with my Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi™ Bronzing Drops with Peptides and I really liked the formula of this foundation and lasted all day. This was a reminder why i didn't throw it away in the first place, even though it was a tad too light!
E.l.f Highlighter - this makes for a great eyeshadow topper for a bronzy eyeshadow look or pretty on the inner eyelid. This is too pretty to part with
Undecided - Becca Blush and Clinique Chubby Stick in Mega Melon. I didn't get a chance to try the blush out and the lippie worked well with lipliner for a nice day time lip combo. It is very old but I think I can get more use out of it
Ouch, creasing with concealer is not good, so sorry you had that experience with the Kulfi @Mellmars1185! I love the D-Bronzi drops - those are still my go-to drops, a GOAT product. I used to have a few well loved items from Drunk Elephant but these days, it seems that the D-Bronzi is the standout from the brand for me. That e.l.f. highlighter sounds magnificent. 😍
That is such a neat technique @Mellmars1185 its amazing what you can do with throwouts and how they can still be useful I hope you had fun at the wedding, did you try these with the bronzing drops at a later date? 🙂
@peculiarzmakeup Thank you! I have been mixing the bronzer drops with the MUFE foundation. So far it has been working well. I think the shade I bought is too light, even in the winter months. The foundation and the Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi™ Bronzing Drops with Peptides have been mixing well and wearing well throughout the day!
@Mellmars1185, that's a great way to use / work through your foundation and bronzing serums. If you're not able to do that this week with the wedding, you can always try it another time. Have fun at the wedding. Is it local or will you be heading out of town for it?
P.S. I love that Merit bag.
Thank you, @itsfi ! So far the bronzing drops have been working well. The wedding is local (about half an hour away). Now I just have to pick a dress. I always find picking out an outfit is the hardest part of getting ready. I am looking forward to it! I have not been a guest a wedding since before covid. The Merit bag is great because you can fit a lot in it!
Your really disciplined @Mellmars1185 I hope you can make those not quite right shade matches work out. 🍀 That's really fantastic commitment and less waste. I admire that sooooo much! 🙏
@CynthieLu Thank you! I would have to say when it comes to makeup I am not disciplined 😆. However, I was doing a bit of organizing today and found a lot of older items. I also destashed a ton. It was long overdue but it made me sad that I am being wasteful. I really need to use items before buying new ones. It is easier said than done because I have a few items in my cart that I would love to buy...I need to put them in my loves for later!
That is a real struggle. It takes a lot of discipline to finish what's open, and to not try all the fun new things. 😉 @Mellmars1185 I definitely feel this as a challenge.
Review of Sample Capsule
I really enjoyed the sample of the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Waterproof Foundation 2N1 Cashew . The shade was great and the product was easy to blend and it lasted all day at work. I had a FS that I bought when this went viral in Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Waterproof Foundation 2C2 Soft Sand . I hope the match is as good.
The Westman Atelier cream blush and bronzers were a hit. I knew the formula was lovely on the blush so I have to say I was not surprised about the bronzer. There was quite a lot of product in these samples. I am going to hang on to them a bit longer before they dry out. But I have my own stash of FS cream blushes and bronzers of different brands to use.
The Danessa Myricks Colorfix was a nice formula. However, getting it out of the little tubes was challenging. I have some FS of these I have not opened yet sadly. Now I have some inspiration on how I will use them in the future.
I loved both lip products - Too Cool for School lip balm was nicely pigmented and felt nourishing on the lips. The Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion lipgloss was amazing. I loved it so much I checked to see if I could find it online but no luck yet. Not sure if this is discontinued.
The MAKE UP FOR EVER HD SKIN TWIST & LIGHT 24HR Luminous Finishing Powder came with two shades. One was too light and the other too dark. Unfortunately I can't say how I liked the product.
The Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Full Coverage Concealer was nice. I used the dark shade as a bronzer and the lighter shade under my eyes. I did get some creasing under my eyes after about 5 hours of wear after setting. I do have oily skin, so it is not something I can avoid fully.
I loved the Glossier Glossier You Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz / 50 mL eau de parfum spray so much I ended up buying it. I have to say I am not a big perfume girly so this one surprised me a lot. I like fresh scents and I have a hard time finding loves so I had to get this one.
I realized that I need to use up my samples more often. I threw some skincare into a bag in my washroom since I tend to use it more frequently
Lovely and through review of your sample capsule I think it’s incredibly helpful to know how a product will work in the future sometimes even the sample makes you focus more on its properties I enjoyed reading this I appreciate you sharing! @Mellmars1185
@peculiarzmakeup Thank you very much! Sample week was fun!
@Mellmars1185, that's a bummer that the Urban Decay is discontinued. It stinks when that happens to product we love/like. That's awesome that you found a perfume you enjoy, especially if fragrance isn't something you gravitate towards.
It's easy to get a backlog of samples. I find it happens alot for me with perfumes and foundations. I have a lot of shampoo and conditioner samples but that's usually intentional - I stock pile 'em up for taking with me on trips - they save me space when packing. Perfumes I should be better about using. Foundations, too, but with those, it sometimes takes me awhile because I like to pick up more than just one foil sample - that seems to help with testing how well it wears and not just for a shade match.
@itsfi Yes to all of the hair samples! You are right, they are so handy for travel. Whenever I see they are available, I tend to pick them over everything else!
In Review: The Samples Makeup Capsule (Week 34)
Overall, I had a lot of fun going through my samples last week - it was great to put some to use and I discovered some beauties by including them in a makeup capsule. ruh-roh, can't let my wallet hear that. 😅
I posted more detailed thoughts on each of the foundation samples to the Foil Challenge Thread but here's a general summary of the standouts (good and bad) from all the products that were part of The Samples Makeup Capsule last week.
Top Shelf:
No new products to add to the Top Shelf but there are a couple of beauties I can see making their way there once I pick up a full size and put that to use. Looking at you, Cle de Peau Radiant Creamy Foundation - of course, that would be a top shelf candidate 💸💸💸 and Lawless Lip Plumping Gloss, but I need to do a comparison of other similar products in my stash. A future battle 🥊 in the works ...
New Discoveries:
🌴 The 7 Virtues Coconut Sun Eau de Parfum Travel Spray 0.34 oz / 10 ml eau de parfum spray - this is, as @Buootiful said, a grownup coconut fragrance. And, a lovely one at that. I've been enjoying it on its own as well as paired with other fragrances.
💄I have no idea why this is the first time I'm trying out Armani Beauty Lip Power Long Lasting Lipstick - we all know I don't need another lipstick but I may just pick one up after going through one or more of the shades in this sample packet.
Declutter:
It's less of a declutter (as I did finish the foil sample) but the MILK MAKEUP Jumbo Hydro Grip Primer 5.28 oz/ 150 mL didn't work for me - the tack may be great for really grabbing onto and keeping foundation in place, but on me, it lingered even after I applied my base, far longer than I prefer.
@itsfi I am glad you had fun going through your samples! The Dior lipsticks are wonderful 💄. I wouldn't blame you for picking one up 🥰. Not to be an enabler or anything 😆. I'm sorry to hear about the primer. At least you gave it a fair try.
