What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
That's awesome about the CT powder @Titian06! Did you apply it with the sponge / puff that comes with the powder or a brush? Or a beauty blender?
I have broken capillaries, too. So much fun <<she says with dryness>> Have you tried Dr. Jart+ Mini Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 15 mL/ .50 fl oz I've found that can help with the capillaries and redness.
@itsfi - I used a dense Cover FX powder brush and tapped it all over rather than swiping. I've used the Dr. Jart+ Mini Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 15 mL/ .50 fl oz on and off ever since it was released. It's a love/hate relationship because the dry down is too dark.
@Titian06 Great capsule! I agree with you I have such a hard time finding a great cream eyeshadow!
This all is so encouraging! @Titian06. I'm thrilled for you! 🥳
Whatever happened to bring your CT from last year to mind, that is just so lucky.
(And I totally agree, that gloss right? It's sooooo nice on the lips and pretty to look at too. 😄)
Thanks, @CynthieLu ! Threads like these with all this creativity are so helpful to someone like me! I'm creative to a degree, but it usually needs a kickstart to get going. 🤣 I reorganized my makeup over my Christmas vacation, so I have to stop and stare at my containers to think what's where. 🙄 I'm sure that's why I thought of that powder. I can't wait to work on this look some more!
Soo true, @Titian06 Collectively together BIC has so much that can inspire us and all the things we share with eachother. It's so great to see what everyone is doing, or how thier using something. I definitely pick up alot of inspo from this space. 💕
And you make another good point, it is good too clean and reorganize the makeup every so often, we find forgotten treasures. 😁
This weeks capsule felt pretty easy to bring together! I keep a make up bag in my truck with touch up/essential items, including a shampoo/conditioner and basic skincare in case I'm stuck somewhere overnight. I also keep a make up bag in my purse that generally has the essentials in it. I pretty much pulled all of these from my purse make up bag. I aim for items that I can apply with my fingers for the most part though I will have a beauty blender and one shadow blender brush, and one powder brush on hand this week. Hoping to see if I can also minimize the tools I use this week.
I'll also have my project pan make up items to pull from as well which include...
@missjeanie Great capsule picks! I would like to try out the Dior Concealer. I like how you use this all over instead of a foundation. I am going to try it out. Do you find it works better in the colder months vs the warmer months? Your YSL palette looks beautiful. The shades are so pretty.
@Mellmars1185 I actually think the DIOR Backstage Concealer 0N looks better on my dry skin in the summer when it holds more moisture. At this point its just sooooo close to being finished that I'm trying to layer moisturizers and facial oils to finish it off. I used it today as foundation and I figure I may be done it before the week is out. I do like using concealers like this though... makes life a little quicker on days I'm on the run! Let me know if you try it out, I'd love to hear what you think!
This is a really good mix! Your purse make up bag it's just straight #goals. 🏆 @missjeanie.
I have SPF, lip balms galore, some hand care and usually a travel perfume. I'm learning something here about what I could have and keep on me for touch ups. You are definitely inspiring me to shake it up and create something with more fun and more options for this week's challenge. The neutrals palette is a great pick, it can go with anything. And if it's a formula you can just swipe on, that's even better. 😉
@CynthieLu Oh there's also a travel size fragrance and SPF in there too!! I keep everything in a tiny IPSY make up bag and luckily my purse is normally big enough. Never know when you'll need to freshen up for a fun time on the go!
Gotta love the purses than can fit everything @missjeanie 😉
@missjeanie - The YSL palette is sooo pretty! A "plain" palette is the best to keep handy--it will go with anything! 🙂
@Titian06 Thanks! I put this on today with my fingers and it really is so forgiving and easy, and yes, it just goes with anything!
Yes to including your pan it! challenge items to your capsule @missjeanie!!! Your last pic missjeanie! My eyes got big and a huuuuge smile broke across my lips - look at all those beauties! 😍😍😍 That YSL palette is gorgeous 💗 and I see pan on that MUFE powder!!! 🙌
@itsfi I think I tend to forget about this YSL Palette since its so.... plain? But it really can be a workhorse for me and always delivers. Some of the taupes are really nice and easy to use. YSL does a great taupe in a number of palettes....
@missjeanie, plain eyeshadow palettes to the world are my heart’s prized palettes. 😝 Browns, nudes, neutrals … looooove them. They all look different to me. Uh-huh, yep, all different and unique. 😉 When I first started getting into makeup, I had quite a handful of mauve palettes and 1-2 brown/neutral or taupe palettes. The mauves were all anyone would match me with and the neutrals / taupes I’d match myself to. Lol. It’s so hard for me to find a mauve palette I like now; I’m so picky about it, often comparing it to the ones from decades ago.
@itsfi I also love a good mauve... I feel like I'm forever on the hunt for the next great mauve and the next great taupe. I love to look at all the colours... but they really rarely make it on to my face lol
@missjeanie It sounds like you’ve always had this capsule at the ready! Smart think about keeping it with you when you’re on the road. At least you have the essentials to freshen up. And I love that you have a shenanigans lippie too! 😃
@JoSometimes MAC Rebel has been a lipstick that's been in my collection for at least a decade... maybe closer to two (different tubes lol) But it's always been a go to that I know I can use. Now it's officially been renamed a shenanigan lipstick in your honour!
