What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Week 7 - The Lunar New Year - Year of the Dragon Makeup Capsule and/or The "Things I Love" Makeup Capsule
I don't have enough LNY makeup to do a full face so this week's capsule will combine both themes and include some products from last week's prompt that I would like to use more, together with a couple of items I'm working on as part of the Pan It! - 2024 Challenge.
Primer (Face): | From last week's capsule, Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Glow Serum with Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide Main Squeeze |
Foundation: | Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation, a Top Shelf product and a 🐐 (This is a GOAT, Greatest Of All Time product for me) |
Concealer: | Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer (not pictured) |
Concealer (under eye): | Fenty Beauty by Rihanna We're Even Hydrating Longwear Waterproof Concealer (from last week's capsule) |
Primer (Eye): | PAT McGRATH LABS IntensifEYES™ Longwear Eyeshadow Primer IntensifEYES™ Longwear Primary (from last week's capsule) |
Blush: | Tower 28 Beauty x Kung Fu Panda BeachPlease Cream Blush in shade Dumpling Hour (Limited Edition (LE)) - I can't tag this as it's not available anymore (will use for cheeks & lips, but mostly cheeks) |
Eyeshadow: | Natasha Denona Biba All Neutral Eyeshadow Palette Full Size Biba Neutral Eyeshadow Palette (part of the Pan It! Challenge) |
Mascara: | Rotate between Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara 01 Waterproof Big is The New Black (a Top Shelf and 🐐 product for me) and Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara (gratis) |
Lips: | Westman Atelier Lip Suede Lipstick Palette Les Nudes (part of the Pan It! Challenge) Tower 28 Beauty x Kung Fu Panda ShineOn Lip Jelly in shade Magic (LE) |
Setting Spray: | Gucci Brume de Beauté Beauty Mist 2.7 oz / 80 mL (not pictured), another Top Shelf product |
Bag: | Jewelry pouch converted into a mini makeup bag. It won't hold all the products I use for a full face, but it should fit all the go-to's for my everyday look this week. |
These items together would make a full face of makeup for me, which I'll probably do about twice, maybe three times, this week. I'll pare this down to about half a dozen products for my everyday look, which will include the two limited edition Tower 28 x Kung Fu Panda products that are part of The Lunar New Year Year of the Dragon Theme.
What beauties are in your makeup capsule for this week?
@itsfi The Tower 28 lip and cheek and the sunny days are both hero products for me as well. I did the same this week... combo of products from both theme options... or at least my interpretation of the themes. I love the products you chose. Concise, multi use, and still a full face!
@missjeanie, believe it or not, this Tower 28 LNY cheek/lip product is the first one I have used from the brand? I have most of their lip products (surprised?) and have gone through and repurchased SunnyDays at least twice! But no cheek product until now. And of course the first one is a bold red shade! 😂
A combo of products from the themes this week and some pan products made for a well rounded group of makeup products. I don’t know how to explain it - I prefer a more streamlined number of products for my daily looks but I like having a lot of options for products. Hahaha! It’s like I need / want the best of both worlds. lol
I get that @itsfi ... I want to have a few options... but not too many. I feel like my capsules so far have been good for that... they look like a lot, but it's much more curated than just having the run of my entire collection. Too many is too overwhelming, and too few makes me feel like I'm stuck with just one thing.
@itsfi Your makeup bag/capsule is absolutely gorgeous. The Tower 28 Foundation is something I need to try one day. Next time I cross the border, this is going to be something I pick up. Great picks for this week. I like your chart breakdown of everything.
@Mellmars1185, I wish the Tower 28 tinted SPF foundation was available in Canada. Seems like anything with sunscreen (or that’s regulated like actives) has a harder time passing muster up there. Between this challenge and a couple other ones on BIC, like this the masking one and tracking empties and foils, I’m realizing how much I like charts to break things down. 😂 I don’t know what it is?!! Maybe having all the info in one place at a glance?!!
@itsfi The charts are very organized and neat. They just make sense. I have to invest in a new laptop because mine in an antique at this point. Once I have one I might be doing the same thing. I tend to go on my phone to post.
@itsfi Absolutley love these products I would love to try the eye primer amazing selection
@peculiarzmakeup, thank you! It’s been great to identify which products are must haves for my collection and even better to let go of some that I’ve been hanging on to.
I agree I’m learning to try new things it’s really amazing to keep faves and explore news! So important 💕 @itsfi
I had to look into some of your loves @itsfi ahhh I already knew Tower 28's SPF tint wasn't available here but forgot, lol. I hope we see it on our side someday.
This is a beautiful grouping with some very lovely loves in your capsule this week! I think your going too have lots of fun with it. 💘👌
I think my capsule may lead more towards the "things I love" side, bit I haven't reached in yet to explore my collection for any suitable LNY items. 😉
@CynthieLu, it’ll be fun to put together (and to see) your “things I love” capsule! ♥️ Fitting with Galentine’s and Valentine’s Day this week. The LNY theme can be challenging; I completely get that. I try to make the weekly prompts ones that can work for a lot of folks - it doesn’t have to be all products, one will do. And anything red or gold, or red and gold, would be fitting for LNY as well. 😉
RECAP: Week 6 - Black Founded / Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule
Week 6 Summary:
Looking forward to hearing how Week 6's makeup capsule worked out for everyone!
@itsfi The Beauty Bakerie brushes are too cute!! I am glad you were able to rediscover the Uoma foundation. I think that is another amazing aspect of this challenge. We are rediscovering and discovered new favourites. It sounds like a very successful week.
@Mellmars1185, so much thought and creativity in the branding and marketing for Beauty Bakerie. Keeping my fingers crossed that the set finds its way back into stock at your local Shoppers!
Shopping your stash has taken on a whole other level with this challenge. Yes, it does help with a no / low buy, but it's also just made me more conscious of what I have and what treats are waiting to be discovered or rediscovered. One of the aspects to these weekly capsules is hearing about how product(s) perform in the longer haul - not just first impressions, which themselves are great to hear about, but how something performs over time. And, it's so interesting and educational to learn why someone likes a certain product, and being able to ask questions. So helpful!!
@itsfi Those top two shades of the Juvias Place Palette... I LOVE them!! Looks like I need to take a look at the Ami Cole multisticks too.... This challenge has me adding to my list constantly lol
@missjeanie, I've been really happy with Juvia's Place The Taupes. 😍 Really surprised by the Ami Cole multisticks. I have my eye on the plum shade but will want to swatch it first. Yeah, this challenge has helped me to not want to pick up products right away and stick to my low / no buy - I actually look forward to curating a capsule with the prompts - shopping my stash has been a lot of fun. That said, my list for the sale is longer than it should be for this time of the year. 😅 I'm toying with putting myself on a personal challenge of decluttering at least 1 product per week, or aim for that average every month. It'll help to clear up my collection faster and really move me to think about what I'm keeping and why; or, alternatively, what I'm letting go of and why. In theory, it seems doable, but who knows if it'll actually happen.
@itsfi Not being able to swatch the Ami Cole may be the only reason I don't pick them up... And I suspect the JP taupes may join me this year... I wore the Nudes today and it's peachier than it looked in store, nothing wrong with that... but I'm more into the cooler taupes I think.
I actually have a few declutters already in my empties for this month, slightly cheater products (Older SPF's) but it's products none the less. I'm going to try and and pick out a few things every month that need to go. Try.... being the key word! lol. You're influencing me both to add to my stash and remove from it at the same time.
@missjeanie, I think you will like The Taupes - it's got that moody, cool tone that I like in neutrals.
All you have to do is try! And, yes, declutters are declutters.
"You're influencing me both to add to my stash and remove from it at the same time." Ohhh, me??!!! I dunno. Maybe it's my superheroine power? Hahahaha! Add and subtract - that somehow evens it all out and makes it good, right? 😆
@itsfi lol... you're a superheroine in my books!! And yes, I can officially tell you you've got balanced debits and credits which makes me smile! Though if we're talking over the years here... I'll have to do a LOT more decluttering lol
Lol, I feel like there are many of us who have a lot more decluttering to do @missjeanie! Easy to accumulate all this stuff but so hard to let it go!! I’ve gotten to the point where once I’ve decided to declutter it, I need to take a pic quickly and then drop it in the trash or send it way to its new home post-haste. Before I have time to change my mind and bring it back into the fold. 😝
