CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:
Week 38 - (September 16 - 22) - The LatinX Founded / Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule - LatinX Heritage Month is celebrated annually in the US from September 15 to October 15. As one way to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic and Latin Americans in the beauty industry, let's put together a capsule that includes one or more products from a LatinX owned or founded beauty brand. See spoiler below for a non-exhaustive list.
Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 9.16.2024] Take a sneak peek at the weekly themes to come.
Multiple themes this week. You know the drill with the first prompt - curate a capsule with one or more beauty products that you want to compare against each other in a battle to see which reigns supreme; or that is a throw back to a different era (80's makeup, anyone? 90s? 2000s?, etc. ). OR, throw back to a past makeup capsule theme in a Do Over / Take 2. OR, put some products on the chopping block to see if they're keepers in your stash or if it's time to throw them out.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]
What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@itsfi @makeitup305 Both might now be on my loves list.... I do wish I could see the concealer in person. The findation shade finder says I should be a shade that looks like it would be too dark in the swatches.... I just need to move closer to a full store.
@missjeanie I have the shade Ice Ice Berry in the Kulfi (bottom). On the top is Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer 5.0 EP middle is Natasha Denona Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Medium to Full Coverage Crease Proof Serum Concealer ... and on the side is PAT McGRATH LABS Sublime Perfection Concealer L4 (I usually wear L5 but I just ran out). Out of all of these my favorite shade wise is the Tower 28 because the peach tone helps color correct my undereye circles but I can make all of them work, even if the shade isn't perfect. Idk if these are helpful but figured it couldn't hurt!
@makeitup305 It's super helpful! I think I'm running a little more neutral but this is giving me comparisons of where I should be looking! I swear ordering complexion products online is so hard! I take all the swatches I can get! Kulfi is on my list for spring sale!!
What a great personal challenge - to use all your products once before purchasing something new, @makeitup305.
Thanks @itsfi. Idk if it's going to happen for every single product, but to at least give my overall collection love and appreciation is they main takeaway. I have enough products that I've only used a handful of times that the experience with them still feels new.
Week 6: The Black Owned / Founded Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule
I sometimes underestimate the amount of beauty products I have. I didn’t think I’d have enough to do a full face with Black founded / owned beauty brands but here we are. 😂
I’m going to switch things up a bit from my general MO when it comes to previewing my capsule products for the week. I’ll still list them, but I’ll talk more in detail about the products in detail by category throughout the week, and will include some info about the brand and founder. I’ll start off with the base products today and will be back to post and talk about the other brands and cheek, eye and lip products later in the week. Let’s get to it then, shall we?
All the beauties:
Looking forward to putting these products to use. The hardest part is deciding which of the primer to use tomorrow morning.
@itsfi Wonderful capsule. I have learned so much through your posts this past week. I also realized I can buy Beauty Bakerie at Shopper's Drug Mart in Canada! Unfortunately the brush set is sold out. The waffle Lipsticks are beautiful. I don't know if I can resist picking up a few.
@Mellmars1185, thank you! Yaaaay, that’s great that Beauty Bakerie is accessible to you. Fingers crossed the brush set comes back. She also sometimes redesigns the set - same cute concept but the color of the brush handles are different. Before this one, there was a set with pink handles - same fun baking tools on top of the brush handles just different color handle.
@itsfi this is quite the collection! I love how you included information about the brand itself - I’m not familiar with the backstories/founders of some of the brands you’re using for this capsule, but i always like to learn and educate myself 🙂 thank you for that, and for putting the list of some black owned/founded brands in the OP spoiler! It was super helpful when raiding my stash for this week!
Thank you, thank you @cianni! 🤗 I started including info about brands and founders / owners on the mask thread a few years ago, usually when the theme involved masks from woman founded / owned beauty brands. I researched the mask and ingredients, and found I also enjoyed learning about the brands themselves and the founders - learning about the beauties behind the beauty! 😊
I love that there are many black founded / owned beauty brands out there. At the same time, I know that it can be a lot to know which ones are out in the market so it was fun to put the list together. I did get distracted, quite a few times actually, and found myself late in the evening going down a path that kept me from the task at hand with listing brands that carried makeup. lol. There are quite a few really good looking, fabulous sounding black founded / owned brands that focus primarily or solely on skincare and well ... I just got caught up reading about these founders and their passions and how they come up with their brand philosophies, formulations, etc. One thing lead to another and I now have several carts along several websites for several black owned / founded skincare brands, filled with several skincare products. I'm still on my no buy so I didn't buy anything but I am ready when the time comes. Maybe too ready. Hahaha!
@itsfi that’s so funny you mention that - ive gone down the same rabbit hole while looking for products that hit the challenge! While i found that I didn’t have as much makeup brand variety, i did learn that i have quite a few hair and skincare products!
That's awesome @cianni! Love these types of rabbit holes. If you have just one or two products that fit the theme, definitely jump on in and supplement with other products. And, if there's not a product in your stash that fits the theme, jump in anyways with a capsule of your own or redo one you've done before (with the same or different products) - that will be another future capsule theme!
@itsfi that's really cool. I don't think I can do a full face either but I need to look through my collection and see what I have. PMG is definitely the winner in that category. I know I have foundation, concealer, powder, blush, highlighter, lipstick, lip gloss, and eyeshadow. I just finished my sample of the Danessa Myricks primer, which I did enjoy. No brows or bronzer, I think.
@makeitup305, it was eye opening and slightly convicting to see how many products I haven’t even opened. 😔 I’m looking forward to using this week’s products - there are so many good ones in this capsule.
Final thoughts from January Week 5!
Not much to say here other than I loved like 95% of these products and was happy to wear them through the week. I had a variety of looks with the shadows and lip products here and could have used this particular capsule without any issue for much longer.
-Both the Tower 28 and the Benefit mascaras have been moved to empties. The Tower 28 was used last on the last day of January and then hit my January empties. The Benefit was used until the end of the week and then went in with February's. Both were lovely, but I'm not sure if they're 'oh my gawd, I love them and I won't ever buy anything else' kind of loves. They were both to the point where they were very very dry and had to be worked to get product on my lashes so I'm happy to have used them up.
- The Stila lip liner is the only other product that I really have anything to note on. It's okay, and I like the formula, I've used several of this formula in the past and enjoyed them, but this shade is a bit lighter than my preference. I'll happily use it up and move on to others.
What a fabulous week you had with these products @missjeanie. Wow, loving. 95% of the products in your capsule? That’s phenomenal ♥️ What would you say was your most favorite product to use?
@itsfi Never ask a mother who her favourite child is and never ask a BICer to choose just one favourite lip product!!
Hey there BIC beauties! We've gone through a month of capsules. I'll get to my recap shortly (and I'll try to keep it short and sweet). Before then, wanted to check in with folks - whether you participated for a week or all 5 this first month, whether you followed along on the boards or on your own at home, or whether you just stopped by for a peek, thank you for stopping by. I hope there was something here that you found helpful. Speaking of things you may have found helpful, wondering if folks might share their thoughts on the following:
And, now, here it is:
RECAP: Week 5 - Best of January Makeup Capsule
Base - All 3 are becoming regulars in my weekly capsules. I can see that being an issue to getting to other base products so my plan going forward is to move each of these into what I'm currently referring to as my "Top Shelf" products. If these fit squarely into a weekly prompt and there's nothing else in my stash that would work, I'll bring these back into the fold as a leading player but for the time being, they'll play a supporting role during the week. I may still reach for them but priority in terms of use will go to other items so that I can truly be working through my collection and giving a fair shake to other makeup products.
Cheeks - this challenge has helped me to wear my cheek products more, a lot more. I don't have many cheek products so these will go back into my stash to be incorporated into different capsules as the year goes by. I'm thinking the Saie highlighter may receive a "Top Shelf" designation at some point.
Eyes - Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof gets "Top Shelf" designation; everything else goes back into the stash. Nudestix Hey, Honey and Glossier Boy Brow my be involved in a duel with another similar product sometime in the future.
Lips - For the most part, these lippies were all good and will be going back into the collection for use another week. I'm undecided on the Tower 28 Work of Art liner; I don't have many liners but I have a feeling there may be a couple of liners in the same shade (e.g., Make Up For Ever and Victoria Beckham Beauty) that I like more - enough to maybe put the Tower 28 on the chopping block at a later date.
Other - These are all keepers and, except for the Gucci mist which gets Top Shelf designation, will go back into the rotation.
January Declutters
That's all I have for my January recap. I'll be back later tonight or early tomorrow morning to post my Black Founded / Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule. I had fun sorting through my collection and am excited to use the beauties in this coming week's capsule. 💖
@itsfi I thought of something I would like to share ☺️. Just an idea for a weekly theme. I have seen some videos of influencers that do a full face of a certain brand? Maybe one week we can do that with a brand of choice?
Yep @Mellmars1185! That’s in the works. I love the idea! There’s a week for “one brand or all the brands” - I’ll see about moving it up the schedule too and will tag you. I was inspired by @sister13 who did something along those lines last year (or the year before last?) for the makeup challenge thread - https://community.sephora.com/t5/Makeup-Is-Life/Makeup-Challenge-of-the-Week-2021-2022-2023/m-p/5992...
Having done these capsules for over a month, it’s been interesting to see that I can do a full face (or nearly a full face) with certain brands. That may be a theme that gets repeated during the year!
Edited to add - mellmars1185, it’ll be part of either March or April’s capsule prompts. March themes will be posted by the end of this week.
@itsfi Wow! A month done! Looks like you made good use of the capsule challenge!!’ And it’s nice to see some declutters!
1. I feel like the challenge is well rounded. I like the different themes thus far they are really pushing me out of my regular rotation! I don’t know if there is anything I think could be improved! I think it’s perfect!
2. Weekly is perfect for me. The ones I did participate in was nice to get everything ready Sunday night for Monday! I’m not sure if changing it to more or less frequently would be beneficial at this point. I need a week to really gauge how something works for me!
3. I am loving this so far! I’ve loved the challenge this far and I can’t wait to see what’s next!!!
