What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Ah, thank you @PrettyPaint for those kind words. I really like the DM liner; it’s one of the easier liquid liners to use. 👍🏼 I still need to prop my arm against the wall to help steady it but I have tried to free hand my line with the Danessa Myricks and it has worked pretty well, better than I expected. Do you have a liquid eyeliner you are currently using and loving?
I need to put it to use vis-a-vis other liquid eyeliners, to see how they all perform. Maybe it’s something I should do in August or September. 🤔 Those are traditionally warmer months here so it would make for some good testing conditions. 🔬🧫🧪
@itsfi That's great to hear that it's an easy one to use. I put it in my sephora cart so I can keep it in mind for the next purchase. I haven't been using liquid liner, unfortunately, though I love it. I may try to reintroduce it in the fall. My eyes are watery enough (maybe allergies?) that I haven't really been able to use liquid liner lately. It winds up looking runny once I go outside, so I've given up on it for now, sadly.
Nah, it's good your hitting pause on the eyeliners @PrettyPaint. If your eyes aren't up for, there's no sense in using the eyeliner. Plenty of other beauty products to play with, or none at all - a bare face (with SPF in the daytime - had to get that plug in, lol) is beautiful. Sorry about the watery eyes, that's no fun, not just when it comes to eyeliner. Ugh, allergies. I hope they get better.
@itsfi I think I recall you were dealing with allergies earlier this year, so I hope that's resolved for you!
Yes @PrettyPaint, good memory. In the spring and early summer - allergy season was not kind to me. That passed and then I overdid it with the acids - had a few products with acids in them and while the concentration on each was pretty mild, the combination of them was too much and I spent part of May and most of June working to repair a compromised skin barrier. Thankfully, I have some go to products for that. A simple skincare routine with some tried-and-true products hit the spot!
The Ultimate a.k.a *my faves* Makeup Capsule
Everything in this capsule is easy to reach for, something I always enjoy wearing and the top choice in it's category.
Blush: Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed - Matte Color for Cheek & Lip Bellini
This color specifically is my favorite of the line, and the formula works easily with my dry skin and has wonderful staying power. This was an easy pick. 👌
Eyeshadow: Yeeesh. This was harder than I thought it would be to narrow down. I ended up going through my entire eyeshadow collection trying to settle on just one. I picked Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette because it was one of my first all time favorite palette's. I still enjoy wearing it and, it still smells like 🍑. Sentimentally this just palette has a special place on my heart.
Base Layer Products:
Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides 4
Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 Weightless Mineral Sunscreen 1.7 oz / 50 mL
Hour Glass Jellyfish Palette
DM's tint is my perfect skin tint. I can't feel it when I wear it, I need a few drops to cover my entire face, and it's dry skin friendly. It's the best I've enjoyed too date. 🙂
HG's Ltd Edition Jellyfish face palette has everything I need in one place. The powders blend so effortlessly. The bronzer, highlight, blush and setting powder are all great, I love using this every time. 🪼
Tatcha's SPF plays well with my makeup. I try to wear SPF everyday, so having one that I can wear without feeling it and that behaves with most of my makeup. (plus it's 50+ 🤩) is very important to me.
Brows and Lashes:
We all know I'm loving Benefit Brow products and the gel and pencil in shade 3 do it all for me. 😉
I picked Clarins 4D mascara in brown because this is my everyday, anywhere mascara. It's not smudgy or gloopy and it's a little softer than wearing black. I reach for this often.
Lips:
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Poutsicle Hydrating Lip Stain Berry Banger
TOM FORD Lip Color Lipstick 01 Insatiable
I found the lip stain from Fenty last summer and it's still the best stain out of any I've tried. If you've used it you know what I'm talking about it. 💓 The color and staying power are everything I'm looking for.
Tom Ford's lip sticks are a pleasure to wear. They glide on smooth and last pretty well. I find the fade away when I wear them is graceful. I think they are the most comfortable lippies in my collection. ✨
Special touches ( The New favourites )
MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil Extreme Waterproof Lip Liner 606 Wherever Walnut
Westman Atelier Lip Suede Hydrating Matte Lipstick with Hyaluronic Acid Minx
Armani Beauty Prisma Glass Hydrating Lip Gloss with Squalane 01 Clear Shine
DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster 2N
These are all new to me from very recent to last few months. They are products I'm feeling *very* good about so far. 🤓 I think maybe they could end up being all time faves in the future.
The Fits 👇
Close but not quite
I tried hard to get Sweet Peach in but it was really risking maybe breaking something 😮 so respectfully I have it on side this round.
(That is a Milk Makeup Holiday Launch bag from a few years ago. It's excellently huge and usually holds my lipsticks that aren't in rotation. I brought it out for this capsule because it's a favorite amung my branded bag collection. It's got this fun mesh too 😜)
Amazing capsule! I love how you said “easy to reach for” my take on that is that they go with the flow of your routine and that is so special to find. I would do the same thing in an area of makeup that I collect. I can relate to something having sentimental value, beautiful photos, it’s great to see your selections, I love everyone’s personal faves and the idea of a beauty capsule! 🫶 @CynthieLu
Thank you @peculiarzmakeup 💓
I agree fully, seeing everyone's different ideas come together is a huge part of the fun. 😊
I think that's how I feel about, 'easy to reach for
' is a no fuss product, that is simple to use and feels good to wear. And yes, goes seamlessly with the flow of the routine. 👌 You get me. 😜 Lol
I love that! I totally get it! It’s definatley fun to find those products that work like that 💕 @CynthieLu
@CynthieLu Awww, I don't have that peach palette anymore, but I can totally understand it having sentimental value! ❤️
Thank you for understanding 😊 @PrettyPaint It's a funny thing, what can earn a little place in our hearts. Do you have any sentimental pieces in your makeup collection?
@CynthieLu A couple of years ago, I forced myself to throw away most of the makeup that was probably too old to safely use. I still have a lancome blush with silk petals that was too pretty not to keep, and I also have a rouge bunny rouge palette that I haven't thrown out. I kind of regret throwing some items out, though.
Great choices ! I also love so much the Danessa Myricks skin tint. In my opinion, it's one of the best on the market and I use it daily !
Yes the fenty lip stain is really great. I used it a lot last summer, maybe I should use it again this time. It has a stain power which was indeed, phenomenal 😍
Great minds @frenchycyrine I think Fenty's Stain is perfect for summer. Long lasting is my favorite quality a lippie can have, right up there with non drying. 😜
Do you have a favorite shade in the Fenty?
Everytime I see the Fenty lip stains in store, my first thought is "@CynthieLu loves that stain!!" Awww, I adore that you went with the sentimental choice for your eyeshadow palette - and that it still smells like peaches?! Fantastic! Their go-to product for me back in the day was their Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer 1.35 oz/ 40 mL
Thank you @itsfi ahhh see, I think Too Faced is a great brand and maybe a good introductory brand. It was for me, for sure. 😊
@CynthieLu ooh, what a great capsule full of excellent picks! I love that you shared a little about what you love about each of them too. Some of these products I already knew that you love, and some I haven't really seen before, so it's interesting! It's so fun to see everyone's favorite products!
Thank you kind lady. 💕🙏 I love that part of the capsule challenge to @caitbird I'm all ears to hear about everyone's faves. I definitely appreciate community inspiration 😉 thou my wallet begs to differ.
Week 28 - The "If I Were To Curate My Ultimate Makeup Capsule Today" Makeup Capsule
Okay, so I've been both excited for and dreading this week's capsule. 😂 I like the idea of having a capsule makeup collection but I'm less comfortable with having a very pared down collection of products. Throughout the last 27 weeks, I've arrived at the mindset that my ultimate capsule will be more moderate in size than minimalist, and that's what I'll be aiming to come up with by the end of the year, or, at least, be working towards that.
Here's a general breakdown of what my "ultimate makeup capsule" would look like today. The chart in the spoiler references more products than I have in the photo. I'll come back during the week to tag products. By the look of the list, there are some categories where I may need to set up a showdown later this year (e.g., waterproof mascaras 😮 and maybe that medium coverage foundation group though I am not feeling inclined to let any of those foundations go)

For this week, I'll curate 3 subcapsules from the products in this larger group - (1) a work week makeup capsule; (2) a date night makeup capsule; and (3) a weekend makeup capsule - and will check back in with photos of the products in each subcapsule throughout the week.
Here's The Ultimate Makeup Capsule: The Work Week Edit -
I took the Rhode blush (the newbie of this group) on a test drive earlier today and it performed very well - glided onto the skin, blended easily, nicely pigmented, and long-wearing (stayed all day even without a setting spray / powder).
And it all fits, too! 🙌
@itsfi seeing your organized list/chart of your favorite makeup products makes my list/chart-loving little heart go pitter-pat! 🤣 I may have to make one of those for my faves too...Looking forward to seeing your different sub-capsules!
Glad to see you are liking the Rhode blush - I have definitely been eyeing them lately, and will probably pick up a couple at some point (maybe not right away though - still trying to remember I'm supposed to be on a low buy rn 😅).
Awwww, a fellow chart / list devotee! Loooove that @caitbird. I like lists. A lot. 😍 Oh my goodness, you definitely should make a list or chart with your favorites. Cataloging it has been great fun. It's also interesting to see it all on my screen too - you can see what categories or products are ones you like a lot or have a lot of. I didn't think I'd have that many medium coverage foundations I'd like so much, but seeing it, well, it made me wonder about them. I think a lot of it is that with a medium coverage foundation, I can adjust for less or more coverage depending on amount of layers as well as how I'm applying the product.
Excellent call on holding off on the Rhode blush if you're on a low buy. I am really liking the blush but there will be time for you to get them - they're not limited edition and since they're selling well, she'll likely be constantly restocking her inventory.
