What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@Mellmars1185 Great picks!!! I bet these will work beautifully!
@ather Thank you! I am excited to try and make a look with these items.
@Mellmars1185 I love that you found so many wins in last weeks capsule! And finding declutters to streamline your collection too!!
I love the Givenchy powder you have this week as well and I've got dry skin. It does such a lovely job bluring without being cakey.
@missjeanie Thank you! I used to use the Givenchy powder with a triangle puff. I recently started using a brush to apply it and I feel like it makes such a difference!
@Mellmars1185 I use a brush as well. I could use the puff in a pinch, but a brush is more my preference as well. Such a lovely finish.
@Mellmars1185, sorry to hear you were not / have not been feeling well. I wasn't looking so good even with makeup earlier in the week but on the mend. Sounds like you have some good results with your e.l.f. items last week - love the recap! And good on you for destashing things that don't work for you.
Your on the go beauties for this week look lovely - we're going to be twinning it of sorts with the BB eyeshadow stick. I have a different shade but I love the BB sticks. 😍 Hope you are feeling better!
@itsfi Thank you. I hope you feel better too! I may introduce a second BB stick in my rotation...I just have to find it 😅. Do you find they crease at all? I am way overdue for a reorganization of my makeup.
I'm sorry to hear you've been sick @Mellmars1185 💙 I hope you are on the mend. 🙏
I like the sounds of Givenchy Prisme Libre Illuminating & Color Correcting Loose Powder. Is it really that good? 🤩 I need to know, lol.
@CynthieLu Thank you. I really enjoy it for setting Concealer and my tzone (for reference I have very oily skin). It is finely milled so I think it would be good for all skin types. I feel like it brings my whole look together. I have tried other setting powders but this is one I always go back to.
I feel the same way about the Hourglass setting powders @Mellmars1185 They pull every look togeather so nicely.
I'd love to try the one your using or the GUERLAIN Meteorites Setting & Finishing Pearls of Powder don't they look neat?
@CynthieLu They are pretty pearls. I bet they last a long time too. I don't think I have tried anything like that. They would definitely be a nice treat! I ended up getting a Laura Gellar palette that I am hoping is a dupe for the Hourglass. The Leopard palette is sold out so I thought I wpuld try this option out.
These are great picks @Mellmars1185! I like that you even thought about how easy they are to apply. Very smart!
@JoSometimes Thank you! My coworker has a makeup bag in her locker. I think I want to create a capsule to keep at work now 🤔
@Mellmars1185, I have found it helpful to have a handful of makeup pieces at work. It makes it easy to refresh my makeup or to do my makeup at work, whether because I was running late that morning and only put on the bare minimum or I have a last minute after work event to attend.
@itsfi That is such a smart idea. I can't believe I have waited so long to consider it. Better late than never I guess?
@Mellmars1185, in my past positions, I had a fair amount of after work events or lunch events and because my lids were / are so oily, my eye makeup wouldn't look as fresh as the day wore on but I also didn't always have the time to start all over, so I'd leave a makeup bag in my office desk drawer with products that I could either freshen up with or do a full face with. Some months, I even have a bag with a washcloth and face cleanser in case I want to take off the days makeup and start over.
One thing I've been working on is remembering to swap out products from my work desk just so that everything is getting used and also to freshen up the look - I've been swapping things out seasonally, or trying to - monthly was too much for me to keep up with, but maybe it'll be easier with this challenge. Hmmm.... 🤔 Now you have me thinking aloud here ... maybe I'll swap out what's in my current drawer at work with my best of January capsule after we finish up with that week's theme. Gonna noodle on that for a bit.
@itsfi I could definitely use a refresh at work with my oily eyelids and skin. I never considered it. I think I was hoping my makeup should last all day!?! I am so happy to be able to put some more products to good use at work. I had an event after work one day and I brought a makeup bag to work but I ended up bringing it back home. A washcloth is a great idea too! Maybe some makeup removal wipes would work for me.💡
@Mellmars1185, if you find makeup wipes that work well for you, let me know. I have a packet of the SEPHORA COLLECTION Cleansing + Exfoliating Wipes Coconut but I end up using it on my hands if I mix product / colors more than on my face. My skin can be finicky and sensitive so I'm a little nervous about using wipes to remove my makeup, though I have been eyeing #Josie Maran Mini Bear Naked Wipes 30 Wipes 🤔
I have in the past included Bioderma micellar water and some cotton rounds in my work drawer for cleansing.
@itsfi I will. I have been using wipes that my sister gifted me. They are ok on me except around my eye area. Anothet smart idea! I am going to try the micellar water. I am excited to make my makeup kit for work ! If you try the JM wipes, I hope they work for you.
@Mellmars1185 That sounds like a great idea! What do you think you’d keep in it?
@JoSometimes I am not quite sure about the exact products yet. I would definitely have a lip liner, a YSL lippie , a setting powder, a powder puff, a blush bronzer, Concealer, concealer brush, hair brush, hair Scrunchie and nail file.
