What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@cianni We need a petition to get Ami Cole in the Canadian stores/online. The lip oils I've tried are good enough for me to have faith in the entire brand!
@missjeanie Id sign that in a heartbeat!!
All the items you put together will be fun and easy to use, because they are sooo good! @cianni
@CynthieLu Your capsule looks like it’ll be just as fun to play with this week!!
@cianni a guaranteed good time with each product 😉
@itsfiand @sister13 will co-sign this - for fragrance - Chris Collins! @cianni
World of Chris Collins Long Kiss Goodnight Eau de Parfum Travel Spray 0.3 oz/ 7.5 mL
World of Chris Collins Harlem Nights Eau de Parfum Travel Spray 0.3 oz/ 7.5 mL
Also, for anyone wanting to expand their BoB, itsfi has put together a pretty good list. Uoma Beauty is a great one to explore, since it's available at Ulta and Beautylish. They also have another line, Uoma by Sharon C, it's on the direct site and I think at Target. The eye quads from that line are fantastic, with Big Spender being my fave. Mented Cosmetics is another great line.
The Ipsy shop is still open and they have a lot of Ace Beaute up.
Definitely (and wholeheartedly) second Chris Collins fragrances @cianni @danielledanielle! He has a World of Chris Collins Chris Collins Eau de Parfum Discovery Set that is fantastic for trying out his range of fragrances - the set offers a variety of notes. His have some impressive lasting power, to put it mildly. 👍🏼
@itsfi @danielledanielle Ooooo thank you for the suggestions!! I’ll have to see where Chris Collins is available in Canada! Unfortunately, so many of these brands aren’t sold through Sephora Canada (including Ami Cole, which I’ve been dying to try after seeing all the rave reviews). Perhaps a trip south of the border at some point is necessary 😅
@cianni your so right, I can't find them available on the site here. I'm so curious about the perfumes now,😍 so many of you are saying how good they are.
@CynthieLu ugh I know! I looked up some of the fragrances and so many are catching my eye… Danse Sauvage, Harlem Nights, Sweet Taboo and Lost in Paradise look so good 😩
Yes yes yes to Chris Collins!! A lovely person (from what I can tell) with amazing fragrances that are bold and last. Pic from SEPHORiA. There is a n amazing sampler set World of Chris Collins Chris Collins Eau de Parfum Discovery Set if it’s available for you in Canada.
@cianni @itsfi @danielledanielle
@sister13 what a great pic!! I love your necklace too 😍😍
Thank you! It’s a big necklace but helps jazz up an outfit! @cianni
Awww, this brings back the memories @sister13 ❣️
I know, so amazing and I hope we get to do it again this year! PS, I will try to join in the fun of the capsule thread but haven’t had time to keep up with anything in my life these days, lol! 💗💗💗 @itsfi
I hope we can all do it again this year @sister13, with others joining in as well. 💗
I get it sister13 - I dunno what happened but keeping up takes a lot more effort these days and I can't even say I'm caught up. 😆 I'm in the same boat - I have a lot of catching up to do on threads here and a list of ones I've been meaning to post to.
I’m super behind, so before i add in my products for this week, I’ll do a quick recap of my week 5 (favourites week. I gave a few products used this month a second chance to see if they were really worth keeping. I mainly focused on:
I cycled in some favourites from other capsules to fill in the blanks, like the Rimmel lip liner in 90s nude, NYX Shine Loud Lipstick in Cali, Touch in Sol No Pore-blem Primer, LAWLESS Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line Smoothing Gloss and Buxom Power Line™ Plumping Lip Liner Hush Hush Henna
Hits - I knew i liked the BIte gloss, it’s just getting a little older and i want to prioritize using it. I also really ended up liking the PF butter bronzer - however, i used it more this week mixed into moisturizer for a subtle tint/glow. It’s a little light for a bronzer for me, it just gives a subtle wash of color and glow. Speaking of moisturizer, i really did end up liking the magic water cream (as much as i was hoping I wouldn’t….). I still can’t justify the price, but would happily use it again.
Misses - The MACStack mascara was getting old, and I didn’t like it from when i first started using it. This was the last week i was using it before decluttering and moving onto something else. I ended up rotating in the Urban Decay Wild Lash (i think this has been discontinued?), because i realized i had already opened it and used it a few times, so I should finish it up before moving on. The Pacifica brow gel was something i initially enjoyed, but now I’m thinking the shade is a little dark, and the wand is hard to get precise with, especially now that its starting to dry out. It was fine, but I’m ready to part ways with it. The CoverGirl highlighter honestly is really nice, and it’s the only drugstore highlight in my collection. Highlight is just a category i tend to stay mid to high end on, and I’m really happy with my current collection. It s a nice product, but I just wont reach for it versus other things, so ive passed this on to someone who will use it and love it more.
@cianni This is a strong reminder that I need to put some of my Bite lip products into heavy use or risk losing them. I don't really follow a set 'toss it' schedule, but... It's been like 2 years since they've closed??
@missjeanie hahaha I’m the same way - I definitely could be better at working with expiration dates, but realistically a product either falls into two camps for me when it comes to that: “this smells off/burns/doesn’t perform” or “I think I bought/wore this for x event…. Oh wait, that was 4 years ago, not last year….”
