What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Ahhh, the colors of fall! 😍 We don't really get traditional seasons here; it makes me love seeing photos like this even more. They're such beautiful colors - great inspiration for a makeup look.
"I can't picture eating another morsel 😂"
That sounds like you did Thanksgiving right, @CynthieLu! 👊
@CynthieLu Happy Thanksgiving weekend! You have created a lovely capsule this week. I am not sure if I will make a capsule in time for Thanksgiving but I will join you in thanking @itsfi for creating this thread and putting in the time to create thoughtful, fun themes for everyone to participate in!
@Mellmars1185, you can join in any time. Any. Time. The prompts are guidelines and if there's something that piques your interest after when it's been scheduled, we'll jump right on in with a throwback to it. That said, it's perfect timing for a Makeup I'm Grateful For capsule. @CynthieLu started us off with an execellent capule - so many beauties. I have no doubt she created a stunning look with them! Happy Thanksgiving weekend to you both. Hope you have been getting time to rest and to play!
Thank you kindly @Mellmars1185. The theme is for this upcoming week, I just came in a touch early. It's been an busy weekend and I'm going to be in food comma now indefinitely. 😉
I was excited I had some fun new things to try this capsule and it fit right on the theme of things I'm thankful for. A certain someone shared a little Sephoria with me and I was so happy to include a few of those to explore. 🙏🩷
@CynthieLu Ohhh exciting! I thought I was late. That means I will have some time today to put something together! I need this challenge more than ever with my collection. It is getting a bit out of control 😅.
I am glad you got to enjoy a little bit of Sephoria 💖. Your comparison of the ND Nude full palette and mini is really neat. Good to know there are separate shades from the FS.
I was 💯 % early 😅😅 @Mellmars1185
I love capsules the most for the tiny peak into other people's collections. I look forward to yours!
Week 41 - The "Dynamic Duos (or Trios)" Makeup Capsule and/or The "Products with Interesting / Attention-Grabbing Names" Makeup Capsule
During the Makeup by Mario Masterclass at SEPHORiA, he mentioned (more than once!) that he loves to blend, mix colors to get a customized shade. I've done that primarily with my foundation or lip products but have decided to try it with other makeup products this month - even better that it goes with the one of the prompts for this week! 😊
How does it all fit? Just fine, with even a little room to spare in this see-through makeup bag, which may have been part of a gwp a couple of years ago. This bag usually holds my liquids if I'm on a short 1-2 day trip and I don't feel the need for options (that does happen ... occasionally, ha!)
Right now, I don't foresee any declutters from this set of beauties, but it's still early in the week, so we shall see. The other shade of the Rare Beauty lipstick leans too warm for me on its own but seeing as how pairing the LYS liner and tarte balm has worked with the Gifted shade, I may try it with the other RB shade. Stay tuned.
Amazing capsule! Love the reflections of your product picks, I especially love when you mentioned you’re unsure of one of them but are gonna try with different products! I love this concept I feel like makeup has so much room to explore what works and testing out through trial and error sometimes can be so rewarding or surprising. So cool to see everything fit and to have more room!! Added bonus! Amazing job 🙂 @itsfi
Yes, yes @peculiarzmakeup, it’s great that there can be multiple uses for a product! Thank you! There are some products that I know won’t work out for me and I just declutter but there are several types items that I’ve learned, a lot of which is from BIC, can be repurposed or that can be made to work with certain adjustments. It’s nice to have the options.
@itsfi Great capsule! I bet layering the burgundy mascara with the Tower 28 will look beautiful. Have fun blending and mixing these products together! I love your clear bag!
Thank you @Mellmars1185! Ever since we learned at the YSL booth at Sephoria NYC about applying color mascara to the tips of the lashes, I've been trying it every so often - that's been very helpful for going through product on my stash. And yes, it's been influential in a couple of color mascara purchases. 😂 Had to get the YSL blue. 😉
I love to layer and experiment with different mascaras @itsfi ! For natural, good coverage, more dramatic too!
“Blonde-lights” is brilliant, great idea!😃 I love to mix highlighter and blush. Now I need to try and add bronzer in with it! The appeal of the clear bag is real! Love it! 💞
@Sunnysmom, do you have a methodology to your mascara layering? Lengthening before volumizing? Or, drier formula before more wet formulations? Or vice versa?
@itsfi definitely lighter, drier first and any that seem to have growth formulas. (Jury is still out on that but maybe a bit!) The first layer tends to be Ilia, By Terry or lately Lisa Eldridge which is a super nice fluffy formula not wet at all and so good. Did you try it? I was so happily surprised as I found VBB a bit too wet for me. The serious layers following have been using Iris & Romeo, Tarte, Nars red tube or Chanel but mainly Iris & Romeo. I just love it so much. What are your favs these days?
Iris&Romeo Mini Lash Up Peptide Volumizing, Curling & Lengthening Mascara Friesian Black
Ahhh, that makes sense with what to use as the first layer; thank you @Sunnysmom. I feel like more and more mascara formulations contain lash growing ingredients - I'm convinced I have one that is keeping my lashes on the "more" side - I need to do a little test to see which one it might be. Come to think of it, I need to do better about using my lash growth serums.
I prefer waterproof mascara - they've been the only formula that wear well against my oily lids and undereye area. That's my first layer and when I've layered mascara, it's usually been a color mascara on top - usually just on the tips, something I learned at the YSL booth at Sephoria NYC. I'll test out some non-waterproof formulations together in advance of the holidays and probably top those off with a waterproof'ing product. I have a very healthy stash of mascara to go through and have been trying not to pick up any more - I received but haven't worked through the VBB mascaras and have hit pause on any more Lisa Eldridge items until I have a chance to make a dent in what I already have.
That’s a good way to describe it @itsfi ! The “more “ side of growth. That would describe mine I think! I always want to use waterproof and I still have the worst time removing them or thinking the formulas are a bit different. Operator error always. That’s a fun tip for the colored tips thank you! I forget about that! was also going to mention that both brushes on the Lisa and IR wands work so well for layering now that I’ve maybe finally mastered them! 😆The back side really is good for the first layer and pushing up. Then I use the inside to build them up on both sides. I seriously have had a challenging time using these kind of brushes! 🤦🏻♀️🤣
This is another beautiful capsule @itsfi I like the way it all looks in your clear bag, I don't know why but I just find something so appealing about these type of clear bundles, they look so clean and fresh presented like this. 😃 Your photography and stills are always so well crafted.
Geurlain's primer instantly sounds interesting. A long time ago I tried thier watery youth oil and enjoyed it tremendously but the price tag.. ..I haven't gone back. Is the primer really nice? 😍
"...and enjoyed it tremendously but the price tag..."
Hahaha, isn't that always the way, @CynthieLu? I don't know if it's on the Canadian site, but that oil is available as promo gwp - $40 minimum spend.
I know I have probably half a dozen foils of the serum and, unless I included them in my recent donation bag, I *think* I have a couple foils of the oils as well. That is such a beautiful line. ho
Noooo its not on our side but I do grab it in foil/GWP whenever I see it pop up. I just haven't brought myself to purchase a full bottle again. It is such a lovely line. I've had a couple of the moisturizer's etc. in foil form, they are very enjoyable.
Thank you so much for sharing that @itsfi 🙏 A little GWP like that can last longer than you think.😉 I'm going to keep my eyes peeled thou. Sometimes after you guys get a GWP it ends up here sooner or later.
Bronzlight. I love it. @itsfi , do the thing!
I love the combos you mentioned, and @faeriegirl had mentioned that Mario mixes a lot of things. We kind of wondered if this is to sell more products, but it's also kind of cool to have bespoke combos.
I also need to get my hands on that Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Mini Blush and Luminize Trio for that peachy pink highlighter. That would be excellent for bronzlighting!
I'm totally doing bronzlight more often @danielledanielle - I imagine it's the same amount of time and effort, but it seems so much more efficient for me. 😆
Awwww, that mini RB trio looks amazing! 😍 Yeah, it could be - mixing products as a vehicle for selling more products. At the same time, I feel like it's something makeup artists do instinctively. I have plenty of products to mix with one another as it is 🙄 and I'll have even more after picking up the things I will pick up with the upcoming holiday sales 😜 My goal is to not completely undo what I've done on my low/no buy this year. But we shall see, it's historically been the fall/winter and holiday releases that make up the largest portion of my annual beauty spend. Ruh-roh.
