What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Well @Mellmars1185 I gotta say I tried the eyeshadow library's today and it went a lot better than I would have thought, especially with how I remember these behaving. More testing required but it was such as good start. I'm going to keep on using these this week, I'm curious to see how they do. 😀
Week 40 - The Musician Founded / Owned Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule (with a Pop of Colour)
Apologies for the delays with my regularly scheduled capsule postings. Heat advisories and a self-imposed "time out" means I'm a little slow getting back to the swing of things post-SEPHORiA. I ended up scrapping my original plan for this week's capsule because it would have been too warm for all that makeup, though I may get the band of products back together again later in the year - perhaps for a 'take 2' or 'throwback' theme. 😉 I pivoted and put this capsule together as a Plan B! ⬆️ Product detail in spoiler; name of musician founder / owner in parens if it's not already in the brand name.
Primer (Face): | Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30 Refillable Moisturizer (Rihanna) |
Base: | Mix of about-face The Performer Skin-Focused Foundation (Halsey) + Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi™ Bronzing Drops with Peptides (not a musician founded or owned brand that I'm aware of, but Drunk Elephant sounds like a good name for a band). Shout out to @missjeanie for intro'ing me to the foundation. |
Blush: | Mix a drop of the Fenty moisturizer and Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil Stain Delight for a wash of color on the cheeks |
Brontour: | Victoria Beckham Beauty Matte Bronzing Brick - Shade 2 |
Primer (Eyes): | about-face Shadow Fix Eye Primer |
Shadow: | Using the lighter shade from the VBB Bronzing Brick for a wash of color, then if I'm feeling adventurous or experimental (for science!!), I'll apply and blend GXVE BY GWEN STEFANI Line It Up Clean 24-Hr Gel Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner Bathwater (gratis) and both shades from the VBB Bronzing Brick in the outer V |
Lashes: | Curl lashes with Tower 28 lash curler (not shown) |
Eyeliner (lower waterline): | Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light I |
Eyeliner (upper lash line): | For a pop of colour, GXVE Bathwater - on the outer half of my lash line - applied lightly and then I go over it with an angled brush that I mist with ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Mini On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray 1 oz/ 46 mL (not pictured) before going over the liner - it's hard, if not impossible, for non-liquid liners to last on my eyes and this has been something I've been trying out lately with some moderate success Otherwise, HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Clear Cut Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Black Onyx because this stuff does not budge |
Lips: | Rotate between Rare Beauty Lip Oil - Delight (I love the stain it leaves) and Keys Soulcare Comforting Tinted Lip Balm - Devotion - ummmm, I actually purchased this for this week's capsule (doh!!) after @danielledanielle mentioned they have lippies - in their early days, they had a lip balm in a pot and I really wanted it, but waited too long to pick one up - I hit pause on shopping my lippie stash just long enough to purchase this one. Ha! 🙊 |
Setting Spray: | ONE/SZE by Patrick Starrr (not pictured): Not musician founded / owned, but this is going to work beautifully during this warm spell - which is lasting far longer and is far warmer than anything I've been used to since moving to the city. Do I need the ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Jumbo On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray??!! That's a lot of product but it is really good. |
I'm experimenting with my makeup over the weekend and going to try my hand at Boyfriend Blush today and tomorrow a la Cheek Challenge Fall 2024: Fall Flushing Forward.

Doubling up on posts here, with a recap of my September capsule declutters:
The Ere Perez mascara will count towards my empties and not declutters; it seems more appropos there.
I ended up passing along the declutters from my Week 36 capsule shortly after the week ended (I normally toss or hand off my declutters at the end of the month but those took place earlier) so those 3 items (2 Real Technique brushes and the IT Cosmetics CC Cream) were not around for the photo shoot 😅. I also added the two Maybelline Super Stay Powders - new, unopen. I would be a mix of the two shades but after doing some inventory of my powders / setting products, I really have plenty to work through as it is, so these will be donated to a not-for-profit.
Same with the Aether (Athr) Beauty Quad Eyeshadow Palette - Ametrine - the company went through a rebranding (Aether to Ahtr - or maybe it was the other way around?) and then shortly thereafter made the deciion to close up its business. 😔 I do like the color story with this quad but currently have a couple - aaaack! a few quads in the same or similar color family (Besame, Chanel, YSL and I wouldn't doubt if I had one or two others, le sigh) - that I see myself reaching for with more frequency. I'd like to see this one get some good use and some love.
Declutter Dashboard:
September Declutters - 9
Year-To-Date Declutters - 89
@itsfi Continually impressed with your declutters!!
@missjeanie, thank you! The weekly capsules have been good for me in that regard, even if not every week results in a declutter. It also, for better or worse, spurs moments where I'll just carve out some time to go through random boxes / bags of beauty products and sort them into categories - toss, donate, re-home, and "ohhh, what's this?! Hold onto for another day." I *try* not to have too many items fall into that last camp. 🙄
@itsfi Drunk Elephant would be a good name! I always forget about Besame.
Okay, I had to look @Samtian, and there apparently is an actual band named Drunk Elephant!
@itsfi That must suck for them lol. People trying to look them up and only finding skin care.
Hahahaha!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 They just want tickets for the band’s concert and are left scratching their heads why they are bombarded with info about the benefits of marula oil. lol @Samtian
@itsfi I'm loving your capsule(s) for this past week, and great job with the decluttering! 9 this month and 89 so far this year, that's awesome!
I keep meaning to check out about-face and for some reason I haven't really yet. I did recently pick up one of their lip gloss sticks/lip butters/whatever they're called, so I'll have to give that a try soon! How do you like their eye primer? I don't think I've ever tried any eye primers other than Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Original which I've been happy with, but it needs replacing soon so I'm curious about others as well.
@caitbird, right now, my top 3 eyeshadow primers are (in no particular order),
For reference, I have hooded eyes, oily eyelids. My main reason for eyeshadow primer is to keep shadow from creasing and to provide for extra longevity for the shadow.
Awww, thank you @caitbird. I didn't expect to be at 89 declutters at this time of the year; actually, I was just hoping I'd be able to let go of things, including things I like but that might not necessarily be loves or something I'd reach for very often, so I'm pleased that I've been able to do that, and clear out as many as I have. I still have a ways to go and I feel that for many of those things, I'm just going to have to move them out of my collection based on the sole criteria that I just have too many of X and it needs to be loved / used by someone who will enoy it and have the time to put it to use. The hoarder in me has a hard time with that. 😂 But, every now and then, a wave of motivation washes over me and I think ... time to let go. Let's see if that wave hits before the end of the year. Ha!
I've heard good things about the about-face lip products and will be very interested to hear what you think of them. I've swatched a few things from her collection and her color products are really pigmented so a little goes a long way. I've heard they are long-wearing, too, so there's bang for your buck there.
Her eyeshadow primer is good. It's silicone based, lightweight, goes on smoothly; grips color well without being tacky or sticky. I'll post a swatch later today and tag you.
@itsfi You picked out some great products! I have heard great things about the about-face brand. I actually saw it at Ulta for the first time. How are you liking the eyeshadow primer?
@Mellmars1185, I’ve been enjoying the about-face eye primer … whizh is a problem in that I have more well-liked/loved eyeshadow primers than I anticipated. 😂 Not the worst problem to have but it may make for a more sizeable “ultimate makeup capsule” than I anticipated. Hahaha!
I’ll post photos of the primer more detailed thoughts later tonight or tomorrow morning.
@itsfi @That is good to know! My friend and I may do some shopping in Buffalo next month. I will keep this in mind! Although, I should probably use what I have. My excuse will be is I need to spend my American cash leftover from Atlanta!😆
I think that is an excellent excuse reason @Mellmars1185! Have fun on your trip! Will it be a quick trip or a long vacation?
Here are some pics of the about-face eyeshadow primer -
it’s silicone based, glides on easily and smoothly. It grips onto shadows without being tacky or sticky, which I find to be very nice.
@itsfi thanks for the tag & swatch! I might have to pick one up at some point, for...science. yes, let's go with that! 😅
There you go! That’s the spirit, @caitbird! We’re all such dedicated scientists around here! 😆 #BICScienceTeam
@itsfi Thanks for the photos! Does it try down for a powdery finish? Do you think it would work well for oily eyelids?
It will probably be just a day trip. I have never done a day trip for shopping before 🛍. I think it takes just over an hour to get there!
@Mellmars1185, I have very oily lids and the about-face primer performed very well for me. So well, in fact, that I will give it a try as a primer for my nose when it is in its oily mode. It dries down. I'm not sure if I'd say it was a powder finish but it's a satiny finish with a smooth feel - thanks to the silicone in it. I am pretty sure that it'll take me a long time to work my way through this tube, but if I do finish it, I would repurchase.
@itsfi Ohh that sounds wonderful. I will keep this in mind. Do you have a preference between the about-face eye primer or the NARS Pro-Prime™ Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ?
@Mellmars1185, my preference is for the NARS, but it seems like that is being phased out, or, perhaps completely phased out by now. I have a couple of backups so I'm good, but I don't know if NARS is reformulating it, and if it is, whether it will perform a well as the original. The about-face one is more than an adequate replacement / substitute in my mind. 👍
