Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 44 (October 28 - November 3) - The "Sleeper Hits" Makeup Capsule and/or The October 2024 Throw Down, Throwback, and/or Throw Out? Makeup Capsule - In honor of clocks "falling back" for Daylight Savings Time in the wee hours of the morning (2am) on Sunday, November 3 (except for those States and US territories that do not observe Daylight Savings Time), let's celebrate getting an extra hour of sleep by curating a capsule of the beauty products that were/are sleeping hits for you.

"Sleeper hitscan mean -
  • A product in your makeup collection that has become a surprise hit for you
  • Something that wasn't a success on initial release (or on your first try) but became a well loved product for you over timer
  • The underrated beauties in your collection - could be a product or brand, or both
  • A makeup trend that you didn't think would work for you, but now you can't imagine being without

OR, create a capsule with one or more products that you want to go head-to-head with one another (throw down) or that waxes nostalgic over the look from another decade or a previous capsule (throwback) or that you think may be time to toss or declutter from your stash (throw out).

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 10.28.2024] Take a sneak peek at the weekly themes to come.

Show off one or more of your awesome and affordable finds, as well as your one or more of the lavishly luxe splurges in your makeup capsule this week.

OR, curate a look with one or more beauty products that have stood the test of time; the beauties you would place in a time capsule - to share with future you, or to preserve for future generations. Thank you so much @peculiarzmakeup for this super fun and creative theme. Love it!

Week 47 (November 18 - 24) - The "Please, Don't Go!" / Discontinued Products Makeup Capsule and/or The Newness Makeup Capsule - Curate a capsule consisting of one or more products that has/have been discontinued or are headed in that direction - can't wait to see what products folks pick for this prompt - which comes courtesy of our very own @CynthieLu - thank you! It'll be so fun to see everyone's selection(s).

OR, in addition to (or in lieu of) the Discontinued Products capsule, go for a set of makeup products containing one or more new-to-you beauties - it could be an item in your stash that you just haven't had time to get to; or, a new brand for my you; and/or a treat you picked up during the Holiday Savings Event.

Week 48 (November 25 - December 1) - The Things I'm Thankful For Makeup Capsule and/or The “BIC Inspired” Fall Makeup Capsule - With  Thanksgiving (November 28) in the US taking place this week, let's curate a capsule made up of one or more products you are thankful for, be it:

  • because it was gifted to you by a friend, family or brand
  • because it's a HG or a tried-and-true product you just can't be without
  • because it holds sentimental or nostalgic value to you
  • or, just because

Alternatively, put together a capsule with this season's makeup picks inspired by our phenomenal Beauty Insider Community.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @CynthieLu

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ooouh, the 90s? Good times, @danielledanielle! What a bevy of beauties for the eyes to behold this week! That PML palette is a stunner, that blue - got me when it was first released and gets me now just looking at it. Have you had much time to play with the Fenty powder blush? It's on my wish list but there are quite a few things on that list. How's talc free performing on the NARS Dolce Vita?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

The new Nars Blushes aren't as pigmented as the old ones, but it's easier to not over do it.  @itsfi , I have mixed feelings about that, because the pigment made it so good for deeper shades, but it's much easier to build up.  Also, the shade range needs to expand.

The Fenty powder blush also gave me feelings.  I have a lot of feelings.  It's got this white base to it that makes layering/building it up a problem for me.  I had posted some pics of Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Fenty Cheeks Suede Waterproof Powder Blush Drama Cla$$ and it wouldn't give me a nice berry flush like the cream does.  It gave me flat pink.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Fenty Cheeks Suede Waterproof Powder Blush Bakin' Cakezwas a problem too.  It would emphasize every pore, and look flat.  At first, I tried DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster 6N to warm it up, but that didn't work.

Thankfully, I figured out what it needs to work, ironically another blush I found problematicLaura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Cream Blush Southbound .  Together, they give me that pinky flush I was after.

I would def swatch the Fenty.  Between the two of them, I'd pick the Nars.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you for this @danielledanielle; appreciate the detail! 🥰 I swatched the Fenty blushes when they first came out and some were better than others on application; I thought it might just be me. Feel like I can hold off on the Fenty and the NARS then; all good, I’m sure I’ll find something in my stash to play with. 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Amazing capsule! Total 90’s vibes from those pallets! I can’t get over the cuteness over those makeup bags 😍 @danielledanielle

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ipsy makes some cute bags @peculiarzmakeup , thx

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I think with everything you've chosen @peculiarzmakeup you are going too have a fantastic week with your capsule. 🏆  Your workhorses are from such stand up brands. I can't wait to hear how it went. 💖

Comfort matters a lot to me as well for the experience wearing and enjoying the makeup I use. I really relate to that sentance.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you so much! It went well! I was pleasantly surprised I like doing things out of my comfort zone I always end up really liking the experience of learning from it. I am so with comfort, it’s so important 🙂 I appreciate it 🙂 @CynthieLu

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhh @peculiarzmakeup, your capsule this week has a great mix of products. Merit Stockholm is such a lovely shade and will look so pretty on you. Oh, you like the Kosas foundation? I have that in my stash but haven't (yet) pulled it out to play with. Making a note for a future capsule. 🗒

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 36 - The Workhorses Makeup Capsule

Going with 2 different capsules this week, BIC friends, both in keeping with the "workhorses" theme. One capsule will be made up of my current workhorses - the beauties I rely on. The other capsule will have a throwback element to it, consisting of primarily the beauty treats that were my go-to's around the time I first discovered BIC (then known as BT). It's almost like a throwdown between past and current workhorses, @ather. They're all near and dear to my heart for a host of reasons so it'll be a friendly battle of the beauties. Oh yes, it's going to be fun week ❣️

The Workhorses Makeup Capsule - The Current Edit
36 - workhorses (current).jpg
You'll recognize some many of these beauties - some are GOATs that have been with me years, decades possibly (ummm, not the actual product used this week) and others are newer-to-me products that have really been standing out in the best way! Products that appear in both the current workhorses and throwback workhorses capsules are marked in bold in the spoiler below. ⤵️

Wondering if it is being discontinued (?) and a reformulation is in the works. I have spotted them in a few Sephora at Kohl's stores (and, yes, I did, pick up one...okay, maybe two 😉), but is this signaling the end for this GOAT? @danielledanielle

The Workhorses Makeup Capsule - The Throwback Edit
36 - Workhorses (Throwback).jpg
Early 2010s. My skin was going through a phase, one that has only recently (in the last 12-18 months) come to a close with a new phase on the horizon. Back then, I was trying to manage oily skin on the surface on my T-zone, chin and jawline, dryness on my forehead and cheeks that would rival the Sahara desert, with dehydration all over under the surface. Breakouts galore - they'd burst onto the scene and would only start to heal when another cycle of breakouts would pop up again. I had also just embarked on my Korean beauty skincare journey, my skincare journey in general, actually.  That would ultimately jumpstart good changes to my skin, but in the early days, I wore heavier base makeup.

I wore makeup every day, not so much because I enjoyed it, but to (try to) cover up my skin issues. In hindsight, I would have done things differently knowing what I do now. I'll make adjustments accordingly this week to my makeup application with these throwback beauties, some of which are still current beauties! Products that appear in both the current workhorses and throwback workhorses capsules are marked in bold in the spoiler below. ⤵️
36 - workhorses (throwback) Fits 1.jpg
The bag too is a throwback - it was part of a seasonal bag event through Barneys New York (oh, Barneys, how I miss you!)

Spoiler
Primer (Face):
Too Faced Hangover Primer - I don't use this primer anymore and will be using my SPF as primer this week
Foundation:
IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Full Coverage Color Correcting Foundation with SPF 50+ (Light)
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Concealer:
NARS Radiant Cream Concealer
Setting Product:
Laura Mercier Setting Powder - I don't have this powder anymore - I decluttered my last (and unopen) mini jar earlier this year as part of this challenge
Primer (Eye):
NARS Pro Prime Eyeshadow Base
Too Faced 24-Hour Insurance Primer
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
Eyeshadow:
Bobbi Brown eyeshadow sticks
NARS and MAC eyeshadows (both NARS and MAC in a variety of neutral shades, singles, duos, quads, larger palettes) - I'm going with MAC Woodwinked this week
Eyeliner:
Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eyeliner - the version I used has since been discontinued, but I still have a few compacts that have not dried up 🙌 The brand has a "tightline" eye liner but it's in pencil form.
Eyelash Curler:
Shu Uemura eyelash curler - this is still in my collection and rotation
Mascara:
Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara - the Lancome waterproof mascaras remain a part of my makeup collection, though different versions have been go to's over the years
Blush:
Stila convertible color - in Magnolia and Lilium. I used to have all the shades but have either decluttered or donated most of them a few years ago. I have 3(?) I held onto, including these two shades.
Bronzer:
Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzing Powder - an OG
Highlighter:
N/A
Lip Liner:
Chanel Longwear Lip Liner Pencil - 162 Nude Brun
Lip Product:
Buxom Full-On™ Plumping Lip Polish Gloss Dolly is a tried-and-true. This is still part of my collection, along with the Dolly shades in the other lip lines from the brand.
Other:
Beautyblender ORIGINAL Beautyblender Makeup Sponge Original
Real Techniques brushes - These are newer versions of the Real Techniques brushes. In the early days, the version I used, the original version, had a black rubber end to them; I decluttered the originals since the handles were becoming sticky.

There we have it! Many of the products I used in the early days are still around and available, though I imagine most have gone through a reformulation or update at some point. There are some I would probably consider picking up again, but for the fact that I have plenty of beauties in my collection as it is, and I'm trying to be more deliberate in working through my stash.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Amazing capsules, photos, and reflections I really love how you incorporated throwback and current edit. That is such a great way to overview what leads into the current capsules, and such a cool journey to read about. I like how you mentioned how the throwback prompted a thought of what throwback products would be a good fit for now and how current edit shows the continuation of this fantastic journey. Love this! I also love the use of charts for reference in your post. I appreciate you sharing this! ❤️ @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  oooooo this is going to be fun! I can’t resist. Good showdown!!! I can’t wait to see which ones stand the test of time! Or use!!

I see so many great items in these lists! I see so many of my own favs. We definitely must be twins on how products work with our skin!!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, I have a feeling that there will be few, if any, declutters from the current workhorse lineup. It'll be interesting what comes of the products in the throwback edition. 🤔

Oooouuuh, which are favorites of yours as well? I'm curious to know. Yes to twinning!!! 💗

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Yes twinning! My favs are T28 Sunnydays, Bobbi Brown eyeshadow stick, T28 eye lash curler, Nars concealer and the Ami Cole lip gloss! Basically twinning!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh wow you have a fun plan for this week's capsules. Old vs New, this week be an exciting competition! @itsfi

I relate, my skin care has certainly evolved and changed over the years to. If I could tell younger me how to care for her skin, oh the troubles I could have spared myself from. 😅

Your Barneys bag sounds very special and a perfect fit for your capsule. 🩵💙

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

It was interesting putting together the capsules and listing the various products; very interesting to see how there's quite a few overlap @CynthieLu - if ever there was proof a product is a GOAT 🐐 - it's stood the test of time for so long. Ahhh, Barneys. It had a small beauty section in the city, but it was mighty, for sure. Lots of amazing treasures to be found. It occurred to me that my shopping patterns / habits have changed over the years too. My big beauty hauls centered around the two Barneys bag events, the NM beauty events, the Sephora sales, and the in store preview events, and sometimes, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, though the latter was more about clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories for me. I shop less compared to before. That's not a bad thing, at all. Ha!
