What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@ather, I remember you mentioning how severe the tingling was with the DDG and I took it off my list of things to try. I had 2 mini lip sleeping masks to finish and then I can pick up another one - perhaps I should not as I have full sizes but I will at least allow myself to do so. 😆 My lips were chapped a good part of this month so I’ve made much progress on the lip masks. lol
@itsfi Do you find your lips get chapped with weather changes and increase in AC in the office and at home?
Yes 100% @ather! I was wondering last night why my lips were chapped for so long. Usually, I can take care of it completely after slathering my lips in lip balm for a couple of days. So funny how well timed your post was - literally an half hour before, I had an ah-ha!! 😲 moment. I was fine when I was on vacation - hydrated, moisturized lips. I would apply lip balm in the morning and at night and during the day, I'd have it with me in my backpack or shorts as I was walking around, here, there and everywhere. I was also drinking a lot of water throughout the day. But I didn't drink enough water on flights back and since being back I know I haven't been drinking enough water while I'm at work (better when I've been working from home) and have had the A/C on at work and blasting it in the car during my commute because it's been really warm. It should have dawned on me when I went to lunch with coworkers and before our food arrived, I had already gone through 3 -12-oz glasses of water. 😅 My coworkers made comments about how much water I drink and that they need to drink more but I thought it was more because they really should be drinking more water (I know, that was pretty judgmental but we all agree they need to drink more water!) but 3, yeah, that's a lot even for me before the food arrives - I'm usually 2 glasses max before that happens. Hahaha!
Anyhow, back to your question, yes! Weather change definitely affects how dry and dehydrated my lips get - A/C in summer and heating in winter adds to that. I haven't been carrying lip balm with me and I finished the one in my drawer at work (and haven't replaced it, eek!) so I think all of those factors contributed to my lips being dry / chapped far longer than they normally would be.
@itsfi Oh no!!! 😬 I find when I am in a more humid area I get less dry too. Especially on vacation! I’m a 2 glass of water before the food too! I actually carry a 1/2 gallon jug around with me and I drink like 3 a day! I might drink too much water. 🤣 We went to Cuba years back and I generally only drink coffee and water and I remember I was running out in my mini fridge and I left some money and a note in Spanish to have more water and literally came back and my room was full of water. I don’t think I even made it through all the water they left! It was so sweet of them!
I hope your lips get less dry! And back to normal! We have entered fall here so I’m sure mine will get more dry again. I’ll have to make sure I have balm in every room and place I go!
Ahhhh, you're so good with your 1/2 gallon of water jug @ather! And you refill it 3 times?!! 👏 That's amazing. You're amazing!!! #watergoals A few years ago I read an article that recommended drinking some mineral water, or water with electrolytes in it, every so often if you drink a lot lof water, to help replenish the minerals that may be flushed out of your body with heavy water consumption. As I'm writing that, I'm making a mental note to have a glass of sparkling mineral water later this morning - I just had a large glass of water so I don't need any more liquids 😆
@itsfi awww you are so thoughtful to think of my health!! I have been drinking the new Blume Super Belly it has some electrolytes in it. And it helps with hydration and bloating! And they a taste yummy. 😋 I always think am I drinking too much water but I actually crave it. And feel parched when I am not drinking it. I think it’s also because I have been doing Invisalign for the past 2 years and I can’t eat or drink anything but water with them in so maybe it’s that??? I also have to be honest and say I drink soooo much coffee every day!!
OooooOoooh I love that bag @itsfi 😍👀
Also, I have had the rebranded sample moment a few times, like I'll end up loving something and then can't find the product since it technically doesn't exist 😆🤦🏽♀️. Other samples are making me think like.. didn't I have that somewhere?
R/T Dior: I use brush & fingers for cheeks and fingers for eyes. The brush is usually in stippling motions and the fingers to add color back if I've blended it out too much
I really like this bag too @danielledanielle. I need to work on whittling down my bags too, but it’s so hard! This one will stay though.
lol, I feel that - as much as I try to keep organized, things find their way into the strangest places. Like when I find it again, I always wonder “how did you get here?” Right now, I’m looking for one of my lip liners. I am sure I saw it everyday last week when I was not wanting to use it and as I’m thinking about including it for an upcoming trip, I can’t find it anywhere! 🤪
Ahhh, that’s helpful. I’ll try that technique. Note to self … 📝
@itsfi Such a cool category and capsule this week. What a fun way to use up some foils. I have some time right now to put something together. I was just feeling overwhelmed by the amount of foils I have piling up! For the sample eye and cheek makeup, I would probably dig out the product with a small spatula or qtip (or even an end of an eye makeup brush) and apply it to the back of my hand or a palette. Then I would go in with the tool of choice to apply. Sometimes fingers can be the best tool!
Oh my goodness, it’s amazing how fast the foils can pile up, isn’t it @Mellmars1185? 😮 Good tips on the eyeshadow samples; thank you. Hoping they’re not dried out; I don’t remember when I placed the order the samples arrived with - it’s been a while since I’ve purchased from the brand so it’s making me a smidge nervous. 😬 We shall find out soon enough. I skipped eyeshadow this morning but will give it a go tomorrow.
Capsule Catch-up
This week's fit, which I must say was earned
Nevertheless, she persisted 🤣

I learned from this week that my day makeup is my night makeup. I go hard and try to keep it from needing too much touching up from the get go. Interestingly enough, I still do what I learned from a Sephora class. Use of a hydrating setting spray to break down makeup, and then adding a small layer of concealer where I need it + powder foundation. Then hit with spray again. My base usually holds most of the time, but let's say if I'm wearing a mask or if it's very hot, this is a good way to save my color complexion products and just touch up a little. You can also use blotting papers prior to all of this, when I was much more oilier, this also helped.
I also realized I don't go anywhere after the office that needs a different face 🤣🥲, so this didn't go exactly as planned in my head. I thought I'd be more glossy lips AM, matte lips PM, but I'm quite the opposite. Did enjoy using highlighters to touch up eyeshadow.
Week 32 Sleeping Beauties Take 2
The fit for this was a three bag sitch, I pulled out PAT McGRATH LABS Mothership VII Eyeshadow Palette - Divine Rose Collection 10 x 0.047 oz./ 1.32 g and III for this week and I'm always trying to get something new from each of these palettes because I tend to create the same eye look with them, meaning I gravitate to the same shades and same placement. Not a bad thing, but trying to figure out other ways to use each without using other palettes.
Week 31 New meets not so new
I don't remember the outcome of this week aside from the first use of the Ipsy bag. I think I was heavy into the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Stix High-Shine Gloss Stick in general more so then anything else
Beautiful capsules! I like how much thought goes into each capsule, and how unique they are to each person. It’s cool to see day to night and how it’s similar and how it shifts. So neat! ❤️ @danielledanielle
Me too, I like everyone's interpretations @peculiarzmakeup
Wow, you really did put that first bag to the test @danielledanielle; it seemed to hold a lot. Oh, that's an ipsy bag? The "fits" part of this capsule makeup challenge is like Tetris: The Beauty Edition.
Somewhat random question, have you tried the cream version of the NARS bronzer? Wondering how it compares with the Armani. I ask this as if I am actually in need of a cream bronzer 😂 and doing research. We'll just blame it on my thirst for beauty knowledge and not on thinking about adding to a collection that needs anything but adding onto. 🤣
@itsfi, yes that's an ipsy bag. It's called " In the Clouds Travel Case." It can hold a full size palette and then some. Just wish it had a sleeve of something, because I need to Tetris stuff 😂 and that makes opening things quite a challenge in itself.
No, I haven't tried NARS Laguna Bronzing Cream Laguna 03 , because I usually go for a powder and I couldn't figure out what was the Casino equivalent because Nars, again, ditched their own naming system. (ETA...i just saw the slide with the equivalents 🤦🏽♀️😂, I tagged three at random, lo and behold, it's the equivalent). Cream bronzers I currently have Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Melting Bronzing & Sculpting Stick Chocolate Souffle (orangey), Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Warm Wishes Effortless Cream Bronzer Stick Good Energy (contour like), Danessa Myricks Beauty Power Bronzer Cream Bronzer Deep (wish there was another shade because this stuff has a hold) and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Bronzer 05 Teddy (good but I had to toss it because it went bad, but panned it before that happened. I have an unopened one)
ETAA: forgot about DIOR Forever 24H Skin Contour Stick Sculpting and Bronzing Face Stick , need to play with this next before I revert back to my true shade
Fingers crossed that Danessa Myricks adds more shades to that bronzer collection @danielledanielle. 🤞🏼 I have a couple of her products on my “more research needed” list 😅 but think I’ll wait until late fall / early winter when my “tan” has faded (and maybe, just maybe, I’ll have worked my way through more products so it makes sense to pick up another bronzer. Somehow that doesn’t seem likely.
ipsy had some good bags. It was one of the few subscriptions boxes I didn’t have 😆 but I saw the boxes that friends and coworkers received and their bags were fun.
Oh that fit in your first photos! @danielledanielle I was surprised to see how much you could get in there 👏 I'm impressed!
And I relate to you, my day and night makeup really isn't to much different I just might apply the exactly same makeup a bit more dramatically. 😜
@CynthieLu, I remember sending a friend a meme that we were left to believe that we would need day to night makeup so much more than we actually did 😂 I remember really trying to think of office ready -> nighttime looks and how I would transition.. In reality, I never had the issue of last minute party. It's more, "pack everything I need because today's a long one" kind of mentality.
September Makeup Capsule Themes
Veering off the usual path when it comes to listing capsule themes for September - there are a few weeks where lists of brands are included and it made for a rather long original post (OP). I'll include a link to this schedule in the original post for the challenge and will update the "current" theme in the OP as appropriate.
@itsfi thanks for the tag! This is a fun slate of themes - I'm definitely looking forward to participating in as many of these as I can! 😊
Thank you @caitbird. Trying to keep the prompts fun and interesting, and also throw in a few well loved themes into the mix!
