Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

Week 41 (October 7 - 13) - The "Dynamic Duos (or Trios)" Makeup Capsule and/or The "Products with Interesting / Attention-Grabbing Names" Makeup Capsule -  Are there certain combinations of products that are just so exceptionally well suited for you, be it a go-to lip liner and lipstick pairing, or a smokey eye and red lip combination that slays, or a blush and highlighter mix that makes your cheeks pop? Curate a capsule with two or more products that fit better together, or if you have a set of products that just work seamlessly, please share your all-star beauty combinations.

OR,

Put together a capsule with one or more products bearing interesting or attention-grabbing names. I'll leave it to you to define what falls within the definition of "interesting" 🤤 or "attention-grabbing". 😮

  • because it's a HG or a tried-and-true product you can't be without
  • because it holds sentimental or nostalgic value to you
  • or, just because

OR, use the week to repeat or "do over" a past makeup capsule or capsule theme. Consider posting your "Do over" / "Take 2" 🎬 look on the Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024 thread. 😍

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

Spoiler

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oooouh, so pretty @danielledanielle. And I picked up that Sonia G set too! 😊 Gonna have to find and wash them soon so I can put them to use!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 33 - The Day-to-Night (or Date Night): Summer Edition Makeup Capsule and/or The "Outside My Comfort Zone" Makeup Capsule

I combined both of this week's theme for my makeup look, and in keeping with doubling up on things, I'm going to do my Week 33 preview and review here. All are keepers though some will require more work and use for me to become more familiar and comfortable with them.

33 - Day to Night (Basic Day).jpg

My summer day-to-night look was based on these beauties, all ones that we've seen many times on this thread. A light hand for day of the bronzer and I touched up with concealer and foundation for an evening or date night look and added some or all of the items pictured below.

Spoiler
- Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Perfect Glow Flawless Oil-Free Foundation is a GOAT 🐐 product all the way. Since I've been using skin tints more I do notice the thicker consistency (it's not thick, just thicker than skin tints, of course). I like that the LSF can be sheered out or built up, depending on need. The luminosity I get from the LSF is less of a blinding, strobe light glow and more of a soft, natural, radiance coming through - there's a time and place for all levels of glow though for me, the latter is what I love 99% of the time, which is why this has been a repeated repurchase in my collection.

- HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica has been my most reached for concealer this year (so far). I love the formula, consistency and coverage I get with this one. @Mellmars1185, there's a lot of product in this tube so I'm not sure when I'll get through it, but she's a beauty and absent another concealer beating it out or sharing space with it for a favorite concealer status, I would repurchase this when I finish.

- MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer®  for a beautiful all-over warmth and glow, with bonus use in the evening as bronzer, topped with TOM FORD Soleil Glow Bronzer 02 Terra

- I will be very sad when I use up the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light 1 (discontinued) as the consistency and color (and tone) is perfect for my lower waterline - this, along with Shiseido Eyelash Curler do a beautiful job of opening up my eye area and making me look fresh-faced, alert and awake.

Most of these fall in the out of my comfort zone camp, though I'm slowly getting more comfortable with a couple of these beauties. These were included in a night / date night look this week.

33 - Outside My Comfort Zone + Night.jpg

Spoiler
- D-UP Eyelashes Lashever 102 - me and lashes are a work in progress.
- NEST New York Vanilla Bourbon Eau de Parfum Travel Spray 0.27 oz / 10 ml eau de parfum spray
- Thanks to the marvelous @danielledanielle and the fun challenges and insightful information on the Cheek Challenge Summer 2024: Choose Your Own Adventure thread, I've been using blush more this summer. The "blushlights" approach / method is the one I'm finding myself doing, in part, because it's efficient - it also causes me to use my highlighters more - win, win. For this week, it was a Rare Beauty duo of Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Soft Pinch Liquid Blush Virtue (gratis) and Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight Enchant (generously gifted to me by a very thoughtful friend).
- Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml - thanks for the rec, danielledanielle!
- Glossier Boy Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel-Pomade - not really outside of my comfort zone, but outside of the makeup I reach for on a regular basis. I know, I know, I need to give more attention to my brows. Note to self...

Red lips are definitely outside my comfort zone ...

33 - Day to Night Lips.jpg

Spoiler
- LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask Intense Hydration with Vitamin C for daytime wear and also to prep and prime my lips for the red lippies.
- Victoria Beckham Beauty Bitten Lip Tint Hydrating Lip Gelee Je T'aime is a layerable red gelee tint that leaves a lovely stain on the lips. Not many are fans of this formula, but I like it, especially for bolder shades as a single layer of this product and the stain it leaves behind is one I'm a fan of. I can build it up if I want more color but in full disclosure, the intensity even when built up will probably not be for those who are looking for full coverage, saturated, vibrant hues.
- Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Heat Universal Lip Luminizer + Plumper Hot Cherry - I picked up a promo gwp of this after learning it's a go to for the wonderful @Guessgal - this tingles a bit but not so much that I needed to remove it. It makes my lips plush and pillowy and adds a pretty, red hue; feels moisturizing on the lips too!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Awww I love how attentive you are that you remembered the Fenty Gloss Bomb Heat is a fav of mine 😘 and I’m so glad you’re enjoying it too!! Nowadays, I mostly go for this type of red lip oil / plumper / tint because I find it makes me look more fresh, alive, and dare I say, youthful 🙈😜

I might do a little swatch comparison with some of my thoughts on the diff ones I have!

It’s interesting that you mention the Makeup by Mario brightening pencil for your lower lash line. I haven’t lined my lower waterline in ages, but I might go back to it after reading your post (thank you!). It might be a good combination with the new eye patches I bought yesterday so I won’t have to rely on under-eye concealer so much.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I'm going to need to really check that cheeks thread out. Great capsules!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

💯 recommend it @Samtian! 👍🏼👍🏼 @danielledanielle has tailored the challenge with the season but the techniques and methods would be  great year-round. I’ve bookmarked the thread so I can easily refer back to it. Cheek Challenge Summer 2024: Choose Your Own Adventure

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi& @Samtian , and I'm (going to ? 🤞🏽) update it for the fall

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@danielledanielle Do you post pictures, like showing what they look like?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Somewhat @Samtian . I try to include references, like sites, and if I have a way of doing it, photos

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi This looks like such a great capsule to turn from day to night! I am predicting that the Haus concealer may turn into G.O.A.T status for you?! That is too bad the MUBM liner is discontinued. Sometimes that happens with the best products. Have you tried SEPHORA COLLECTION 12 Hour Contour Pencil Eyeliner 54 Coconut ? I am not sure how the formula compares. I have it and it glides on very creamy and is long lasting. How are you liking the Rare highlighter ? Mixing it with the blush makes for a great combo (thanks to @danielledanielle !) Ohh I also got the mini Fenty Heat Gloss. I think that promo may have enabled a purchase!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @Mellmars1185! I have a feeling the Haus concealer is definitely going to end up being a favorite product, if not a GOAT. The issue I have is that I think there may be multiple products in that category. I'm sure I can find a way to distinguish them so that they can all be GOATs. Much like I have multiple foundations / base products in that camp - Tower 28 for tinted foundation / tinted moisturizer category, Armani LSF for medium coverage, natural to radiant finish, etc.

Lol, I'm telling you, it's the promo gwp's that are most likely to enable a purchase! I've been fairly good on my no-buys and low-buys, and have even been pretty good about not spending when I don't even have a no/low buy going on but my goodness, a promo gwp of a product I've been eying shows up or even of a product I know I like (and want a travel size version of), next thing I know I'm trying to figure out what to get to meet the minimum spend requirement to get the promo gwp. 😂🤣😂

Ahhh, thank you for the rec for a substitute for the eyeliner - I added it to my wishlist so I can remember it. I have been trying to find something that will work as a substitute for the Makeup by Mario, and so far, the ones I've tried haven't been, in the words of Goldilocks, 'just right' - I've tried ones from Sweed Beauty and Dior - the Dior one might grow on me yet; the undertone on the Sweed version is just too pink for me though. The Sephora Collection one looks like it might work - creamy but not too creamy and the shade looks like a good fit.

So much product in this Rare Beauty highlighter!!! I'm liking it - I don't have many highlighters in general (or that's what I'm recalling) but it ranks pretty high. Do you have a go-to liquid highlighter?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Ahh I understand about the GOAT 🐐 category vs Favorites. There is so much out there too!

I was inspired after our conversation about GWPs so I created I DID IT FOR THE GWP! 🛍 ! Lol I am sure many of us can relate to this! I think I should go back to my purchase history to find a few examples.

I am glad you are enjoying the Rare liquid highlighter. Yes there is so much in the bottle! I have two and I wonder if I will be able to finish them. I have a gold shade and a more bronzy shade. These are the only ones I have tried so I can't really compare it to other yet. I was more of a powder highlighter gal. But I am open to learning and trying new things. Tbh, I have the Saie Glowy Super Gel Lightweight Dewy Multipurpose Illuminator and I have not given it enough love. Would you say this counts as a liquid highlighter?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, I would say the Saie Illuminator most certainly counts as a liquid highlighter. In the early days of this challenge, it was my go to liquid highlighter. I still like it a lot, but I've been digging more into my stash (and also picking up some of the new releases - oop! 😲). I need to add it to the list to use for a future Sleeping Beauties capsule. These days, I probably put the Saie Illuminator into the gel highlighter category, but that's only so that it won't look like I have so many liquid highlighters. 😂

"I was more of a powder highlighter gal. But I am open to learning and trying new things." SAME, mellmars, same. I've gotten more into cheek products this year with this challenge and with some enabling encouragement along the way from other BIC beauties and threads like Cheek Challenge Summer 2024: Choose Your Own Adventure and seeing the lovely looks folks here, like yourself, create and post to Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024 and What are you wearing today Pt2

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I am curious to know what new releases of liquid highlighter(s) you picked up! Maybe 2024 is a big year for cheek product new releases? I have picked up many this year too. Off topic but the new Hourglass Liquid Blushes have caught my eye.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, oooouh, the new Hourglass blushes! I smile every time I see the new Hourglass blushes on display - they're all so cute lined up together. They look like they would make the perfect set - hmmm ... maybe a set of mini's for the holidays??? 😍

Oh yes, I feel like cheeks and tinted lip balms have been having some major moments this year. I'm very behind on getting to the products I picked up earlier in the year; hoping to find some more time soon. The good news is that I have been good, okay, fairly good, about not picking up too many more things in the meantime. 😅 I picked up a few more liquid highlighters this year, or, they're probably more new-to-me than new as in trending new - a couple of the Dior ones, a Rare Beauty mini (even that has a lot of product in it), Pai, Vieve.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Oh yes they would make a nice holiday set. Plus if they do I am sure many of us would love to try it. So it is like a win win situation lol.

I think I am in the same category as you in shopping....maybe fair I would say. I tried but it is so hard for me to resist certain sales or new releases. One might think from the outside that I am doing well for my no/low buy. But the truth is I am just not posting them on the haul threads 🫠

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hahahaha @Mellmars1185! I am LOVING the “but the truth is I am just not posting them on the hauls thread.” 😂🤣😂 If I didn’t have a pile of unopened boxes in one corner of the living room, I’d think my subconscious was doing the same thing. I’m so behind on unboxing. But, to be fair, I’m also not buying as often or as much as I did before. Not that I don’t get distracted by all the pretty releases, but I’m less inclined to buy the next releases as soon as it comes out just to have it. Is there a product category or brand that you find harder to resist?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Hehe I am behind on unboxing too. Maybe that is another reason to slow down on the spending. I watch a YouTuber that enables me to make lots of purchases. Lip oils/lipsticks, lipliner, new Foundations/concealers are hard for me to resist. I don't lean towards a particular brand. I like buying things that others recommend. I like everything lol

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh, it sounds like the YT’er is doing his/her job very well then @Mellmars1185. I’m hoping to get all my unboxings done in the next couple of weeks but that’s a pretty aggressive schedule. We shall see. Much of it is not beauty related; not sure if it’ll make the process go more quickly though.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Ohh happy unboxing! It sounds like you have quite a bit to open! I hope you are happy with everything you get 🎁

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185, thank you. I had some things I ordered for the house and they arrived in different shipments over a period of months. 📦 Clearly I did not time things very well. 😆 I also have a package in the pile that I think will be very fitting for the I DID IT FOR THE GWP! 🛍 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Oooo a whole package?!?! Now I am curious about what it is! 🤔
