Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 1.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 2.jpg
0 - 8.18 edit capsule post 4.jpg
To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:

.

Week 49 (December 2 -8) - The Beautifully Bold or Delightfully Demure Makeup Capsule and/or The "Savvy Shopper" Makeup Capsule
🌺  The "Beautifully Bold or Delightfully Demure" Makeup Capsule prompt was inspired by a comment by the mom of our marvelous @caitbird. Mama caitbird is a gem - bringing broken mugs back to life, making delicious meals and treat. She's a superwoman and it just made me laugh heartily when caitbird shared about an occasion when her mom gave her major side-eye over one of caitbird's stunningly vibrant and beautiful makeup looks of the day

Curate a capsule with the one or more products you use for a beautifully bold or delightfully demure look. Or, a capsule with a mix of these two looks. Also, for this theme, you may want to consider a tie-in with Cheek Challenge Winter 2024/25, The Frost, The Glitz and The Wardrobe for a princess / prince - like flush of color.

🛍  Discover a loved product from the Sephora sales event? Or, did a holiday savings event item just find its way to your front door? Were there beauties too good to pass up during the Black Friday, Green Friday, Small Business Saturday,  Cyber Monday, or general holiday sales? Share a makeup capsule consisting of one or more beauties you picked up during the holiday sale season.

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 12.2.2024] Take a sneak peek at the weekly themes to come.

Week 51 (December 16 - 22) -  The Winter Wonderland Makeup Capsule and/or The "Take 2" / "Do Over" Makeup Capsule - With the winter solstice coming December 21, let's put together a capsule of one or more product that celebrates the season!

and/or

Curate a bag with your go-to, GOAT, ride-or-die products that would make up your ultimate makeup capsule collection (for 2024). If it's too much to put together a creme de la creme capsule or if you're at your best with options, consider putting together a makeup capsules of one or more favorites you discovered (or re-discovered) in 2024.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

Spoiler

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh my goodness, the fits!! Yes, @danielledanielle. I actually started thinking about where my box of larger makeup bags was moved to. 🤔 I had a sizeable one from Sephora Collection back in the day and also some good sized ones from Sephora x Brother Vellies collab a few years back. As a backup, I do have a few rather cavernous makeup bags from Target. It's probably too much to have one makeup bag for each category of product, huh? 🤣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Okay... so I had most of this ready for Monday and just needed to tweak it a bit tonight.  I found this one to be an interesting prompt.  I'm super curious to see how others make use of products in non-traditional ways.  I'm finding that I want to use up all my products even if they don't work for me in the usual sense, so I'm hoping to find inspiration!

Base Products
-The Too Face Dew You foundation is pulling double duty as a capsule product as well as project pan item.  This isn't a faovourite foundation, but since January when I put it in my project pan... I like it a whole lot more than I used to!
-The Clarins UV 50 Sunscreen Multi-Protection 1.7 oz/ 50 mL is a product I like to use as both an SPF and as a foundation.  I haven't been using it as much lately, but only because I have so many things open.  I'd like to start to use it a bit more so that the SPF stays in date.
-The Peach Blur powder is one that never worked great for me as a powder, but I have used it as something to set my eye primer.  I suspect it'll be mostly used this way this week, but I'm also going to try to use it a bit as a powder and see if I've changed my mind.
- Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Jumbo 8.11 oz / 240 mL  I have two of these unopened.  Time to get one on the go and getting used.  I used to use this setting spray regularly, but drifted off and found others I prefer lately.  I'm intending to use this as both a setting spray and as a primer spray.
-Becca Under Eye Brightener.  This is also now the Smashbox Smashbox X Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector Fair/Light so it's living a double life already.
- ND concealer was just one I grabbed when looking for something with good coverage to help out the Clarins SPF in some spots.

Cheeks!
-The Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix - Multi-Use Eye, Cheek & Lip Waterproof Liquid Pigment Valentine was a lovely gift from @TeamBIC and I loved how it looked as a blush!  I'll likely only use it as a blush this week... but theres a chance it could pop up as a lip product as well.
-The Gucci Transfer-Proof Matte Liquid Lipstick 607 Vanessa Violet is a liquid lip that I actually don't mind, and I'm not a lover of liquid lips.  That said, I've used liquid lips as blush a few times this year with success and I think this might be a fab shade if it works!
-The MAC Bronzer is one I was trying to fully pan last year.  I finally hit pan but needed a break.  I used it as both a bronzer and a shadow and that's what I'm going to use it for this week.

Eyes
- Nars Pro Prime -- no double duty here... it's good enough on it's own.
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Mini Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Brow Pencil is a project pan item for me, so it'll get used in both a capsule and a project pan thread.
- Patrick Ta She's Passionate Blush is a nice peachy blush that will be used as a shadow, and possibly to set a liquid blush depending on how those go.
-  Nars Impassioned blush is a lovely VERY light blush, that I'm thinking will work nicely as a shadow along side the Mac Bronzer and the PT blush.
- Melt Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick Circuit is a liquid lip that I enjoy when I wear it, but I just don't feel the urge to wear a blue lip that often.  I'm going to try it out as a liquid liner this week.
- Chanel sample mascara will be used as mascara.  And may be smudged into the lash line to act as a liner as well.

Lips.
Not a lot of double duty or side hustle's going on here.
-Lawless gloss, just isn't used much.
-Mac Liner in Cedar is one that I can easily wear with a lot of different lip glosses and have it work out well.
-Glossier Berry Balm dot com.  Curious to see if this is something I may toss into my panning box at some point.
- Kaja Heart Melter Lip Gloss Stick in Be Mine is one of those glossy balm situations that hasn't had love in a long time.

Lol... the fit as @danielledanielle would say.  I didn't have a make up bag handy when I was choosing this, but grabbed a bag from my neices room.  I think at one point it housed a bath time tea party. It's now doing double duty as a make up bag... and honestly... Love this for some travel situations coming up!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That's a cute bag you put everything in @missjeanie 💝 I love that it fits the theme, it's been repurposed and will continue to be. 😀

I haven't tried much from Clairns but I have a body sunscreen spray from them I really like, how do you like the one your using this week?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu I've repurchased this SPF probably 5 or 6 times now.  I find it works for me great as a foundation/skin tint in the summer.  The light shade is a touch too dark to pull off if I haven't been self tanning my body. I still wear an SPF under this so that I'm using enough product to protect myself, but this one plays well with everything else I use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I see a few products in your capsule that I really enjoy, and some on my list to try. 😍 I like DM Valentine as a lip product - I thought the color would be too vibrant for me but it works well on both lips and cheeks. 👍 Oh, the Too Faced Peach Blur, forgot about that one. Hmmm... gives me the idea of possibly doing a blurring powder duel or battle - probably battle, I have a feeling that I have more than 2 of these blurring powder types.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I'm trying to make sure to include some of the items in my stash that have been in there for waaaaayyyyy too long! Peach Blur this week!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I get that. There's just a lot of stuff I have, lol. I've started using a separate makeup bag to hold/collect products that have been in my stash for a long time that I haven't reached for in a while. My plan, beginning July, is to pick one or two products from that bag to include in the makeup capsule for the last week of the month - it'll fall under the "old" or the "is it time for this to go" part(s) of the theme. Chances are that I'll either come to find that I like the product or that it ends up being decluttered. A win either way.

Interested to see what multi-taskers or which repurposed products will be used by everyone in their capsules.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

This was so interesting to read @itsfi I'm kinda boring tbh, I don't use anything unconventionally or beyond thier intended use that I can think off.  A couple might be multi-taskers thou. Your capsules are inspiring and I love all 3 bags you chose to use this week.

I found a Sephora Bag folded up with my recyclables and I think I'll keep it for possible future uses now. 😀

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, there's nothing boring about using your makeup for how they were intended to be used. If it works for you to use a product how it was meant to be use, that's awesome! If something doesn't work for me in that regard, I try to find an alternate use for it. It started with my skincare products and has just found its way into other things. I repurpose the Sephora bag for all sorts of things and wear it down until it can no longer hold anything, lol. Bags are fun, and functional!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Lol I just don't think I'm creative but this has me thinking @itsfi I like this out side the box thinking I'm seeing, and especially helping using something that isn't the match we hoped it would be, to find other ways to use the product, that's genius imo. 🤓

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

There are all sorts of ways to repurpose. @danielledanielle and @missjeanie approach that powder products can be eyeshadow products is a sound one. You'll find alternative ways to use things @CynthieLu, on your own and from others' experiences here on BIC. I've gotten great ideas from folks here.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi That Dior palette is GORGEOUS!  I often look at these types of multi-product palettes and wish they were customizable.  It's rare I find one that has all the shades I'd love together.  How pretty is this one though... it's got a soft glam/classic romance feel to it!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, the colors in this set are ones I would go for if the items were sold individually so I'm excited to break this one in. It should not have taken so long, but lesson learned. So many lessons being learned. 😆 Customizable palettes would be so fun (and dangerous for my wallet as well). Off the top of my head, I feel like Trish McEvoy or Kjaer Weiss comes close to having or offering something like that. I'd love to see Makeup For Ever have something like that - they have empty palettes that can be filled for certain products and they have their MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Skin Cream Contour and Highlight Sculpting Palette that hits on a few products, but yes, something with the option for a base product, cheek products, lips, etc. would be great - as well as a good selection of items / shades that can fit into such a palette.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I've held off on getting any of the MUFE palettes simply because I'm sure they must release it for customization soon.  It feels only natural to that line!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Good lord...how are you this organized?? 😮

I like that you're leaving us in the dark about the multitasking.  As far as multitasking, I live in the neighborhood of everything that's a powder is an eyeshadow and anything with SPF is a multitasker.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

hahaha, @danielledanielle, being organized helps me to stay sane and, let's just say, some days are better than others. 😅 Having my litte charts of what to wear and where to wear them and having these makeup bags already assembled and just waiting to be put to use definitely helps make the getting ready part of the morning go so much more smoothly and a good start to the day I will not object to! 😍

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@danielledanielle I'm with you on all powders being shadows!!

Week-In-Review: Week 23 - The "Love Is Love" Makeup Capsule

Extra Capsules:

The "Love Is Love" Makeup Capsule: The Makeup by Mario Edit
23 - Love Is Love - Makeup by Mario.jpg
Combined a couple of other previous themes with this particular capsule - in addition to the week's theme in honor of Pride month, this one has a one brand focus with some multi-tasking / repurposed vibes (I was getting a jump start on the coming week's theme). While the foundation didn't ultimately work out color-wise, I liked this capsule - the products and this photo. 📸
Spoiler
🌻  MAKEUP BY MARIO SurrealSkin™ Luminous Hydrating Foundation - formula is lovely; leaves a glowy finish that normal, dry, very-dry skin folks will enjoy. Unfortunately, not the best shade match for me. ☹️

✏️  Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Brightening Pencil - Light 1- this works beautifully on my lower waterline to open up my eyes and make me look more awake and alert. I discovered too this week that this is fabulous for overlining the lips and for accentuating the Cupid's bow. This liner has been discontinued but there are other similar liners out there - off the top of my head, Smashbox and MUFE make good ones. The Sweed lip pencil could work nicely for those with very pink undertones.

🌸  MAKEUP BY MARIO SurrealSkin™ Awakening Concealer served as concealer and as concealer-as-foundation during the weekend. 👍

💄  MAKEUP BY MARIO SuperSatin® Lipstick Bronx Baby lipstick and blush for my weekend wear.

😎  MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer®   - this is the Light Medium shade, which I picked up after receiving the Medium shade in a gratis package a couple of summers ago. Medium will come out to play in a couple of months.
My attempt at another Sephora Six: Fast & Furious edit. More details to be posted later this evening to the Sephora Six - Fast & Furious Edition thread.

Week 23 Declutters:
Some products were easier to part ways with than others this week.
23 - Love is Love Declutters.jpg
Spoiler
🗑  ILIA Mini Fullest Volumizing Mascara Classic Black # - great for a natural look, which is the look I generally go for, but I'm someone who doesn't have a lot of lashes to begin with and I feel like with mascara, I need it to give me some oomph. This is a nice mascara, but it didn't give me the oomph I'm looking for, that I need. It falls in the "it's not you, it's me" camp.

🗑  Kevyn Aucoin Indecent Mascara - this came as a gwp and is a new addition to the brand. I like the original volume mascara from the line - the one in the red tube - and was hoping this new addition would be good as well. This one smudged pretty badly and far too easily on me (not necessarily unusual but not something I care for). The brush is interesting and I plan to keep the wand, but this one is being decluttered.

💝  This one hurts to let go. I like the formulation of the MAKEUP BY MARIO SurrealSkin™ Luminous Hydrating Foundation #; sadly, the color is just off for me. A part of me wants to keep it through the end of the year to see if it might work in the winter, but at the same time, I'm feeling convicted to be whittle down my foundation stash. Foundations are one of the beauty product categories where I know I will have a hard time letting go, so it seems that if I'm of the mindset that things should go and I'm prepared to do so, I need to capitalize on this (rare) moment and let it go. Will try to see if this might be something I can donate. If not, I will try to find a new home for it. Either way, time to say good-bye.

💝  Also saying good-bye to the TOM FORD Traceless Soft Matte Foundation - this shade is too light and too yellow for me. I have this foundation in at least one other color (possibly two, eek!!! 😬) so it seems less troublesome to let this one go. More troublesome is that I may have this in 2 other shades. What in the world, Fi?!

🏡  Sunnie's Face Lip Glow (Girl Crush) - it's a pretty, soft terracotta shade. I don't looks so great in those types of lip shades and this one leans more rusty orange (which really isn't something I can pull off), so this is going to be sanitized and re-homed.

🏡  about face Shadowstick (Actual Ambrosia) - I wanted to like this one. The color is described as a cool-leaning deep taupe-brown with a slightly metallic finish. That's a color I tend to like, but on my lids, this shade is a bit too cool and stone-y for my liking. It also applies patchy on my lids for some reason (though it swatched beautifully on my hand), even with a primer. Will try to find a new home for this beauty. Have you tried these eyeshadow sticks @missjeanie?

Month-To-Date (and Year-To-Date) = 6
I'm most proud of moving along 2 foundations and 1 lip product. Those are being decluttered at a snail's pace, but this snail is okay with that - I can get pretty attached to foundations and lippies.

Declutter Emoji Key:

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I haven't tried the About Face shadow sticks.  I was looking forward to hearing what you'd thought about them to see if I need to be looking at them or not.  Truthfully... While I love the idea of shadow sticks, they sit unused in my stash.  So if it's not a stellar formula I can and should pass on them.  I might need to to do a stick themed week to try and force myself to use them.

I think you made the right declutter decisions as well.  If the shade is off... you won't ever reach for it, you'll grab the ones that you know work, run with the declutter feelings while they're here!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Yeah @missjeanie, I feel like I’m more inclined to be choosy now with what I keep in my stash; well, maybe not for lip products which I’ve been admittedly slow to move through. That’s by choice. In my head, I have a plan to make my way through them and to pick what stays and what goes. But I’m not super motivated to put that plan into effect just yet. 😂

Ooouh, a stick capsule would be great. I do like the convenience of eyeshadow sticks. Right now, I’d say my favorites are from Bobbi Brown and Thrive. Interested in how the NARS fares but I wouldn’t plan on picking one up until the fall, maybe. Trying to be good. 😉
