FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]
What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Oh my goodness, the fits!! Yes, @danielledanielle. I actually started thinking about where my box of larger makeup bags was moved to. 🤔 I had a sizeable one from Sephora Collection back in the day and also some good sized ones from Sephora x Brother Vellies collab a few years back. As a backup, I do have a few rather cavernous makeup bags from Target. It's probably too much to have one makeup bag for each category of product, huh? 🤣
Okay... so I had most of this ready for Monday and just needed to tweak it a bit tonight. I found this one to be an interesting prompt. I'm super curious to see how others make use of products in non-traditional ways. I'm finding that I want to use up all my products even if they don't work for me in the usual sense, so I'm hoping to find inspiration!
That's a cute bag you put everything in @missjeanie 💝 I love that it fits the theme, it's been repurposed and will continue to be. 😀
I haven't tried much from Clairns but I have a body sunscreen spray from them I really like, how do you like the one your using this week?
@CynthieLu I've repurchased this SPF probably 5 or 6 times now. I find it works for me great as a foundation/skin tint in the summer. The light shade is a touch too dark to pull off if I haven't been self tanning my body. I still wear an SPF under this so that I'm using enough product to protect myself, but this one plays well with everything else I use.
@missjeanie, I see a few products in your capsule that I really enjoy, and some on my list to try. 😍 I like DM Valentine as a lip product - I thought the color would be too vibrant for me but it works well on both lips and cheeks. 👍 Oh, the Too Faced Peach Blur, forgot about that one. Hmmm... gives me the idea of possibly doing a blurring powder duel or battle - probably battle, I have a feeling that I have more than 2 of these blurring powder types.
@itsfi I'm trying to make sure to include some of the items in my stash that have been in there for waaaaayyyyy too long! Peach Blur this week!
@missjeanie, I get that. There's just a lot of stuff I have, lol. I've started using a separate makeup bag to hold/collect products that have been in my stash for a long time that I haven't reached for in a while. My plan, beginning July, is to pick one or two products from that bag to include in the makeup capsule for the last week of the month - it'll fall under the "old" or the "is it time for this to go" part(s) of the theme. Chances are that I'll either come to find that I like the product or that it ends up being decluttered. A win either way.

This was so interesting to read @itsfi I'm kinda boring tbh, I don't use anything unconventionally or beyond thier intended use that I can think off. A couple might be multi-taskers thou. Your capsules are inspiring and I love all 3 bags you chose to use this week.
I found a Sephora Bag folded up with my recyclables and I think I'll keep it for possible future uses now. 😀
@CynthieLu, there's nothing boring about using your makeup for how they were intended to be used. If it works for you to use a product how it was meant to be use, that's awesome! If something doesn't work for me in that regard, I try to find an alternate use for it. It started with my skincare products and has just found its way into other things. I repurpose the Sephora bag for all sorts of things and wear it down until it can no longer hold anything, lol. Bags are fun, and functional!
Lol I just don't think I'm creative but this has me thinking @itsfi I like this out side the box thinking I'm seeing, and especially helping using something that isn't the match we hoped it would be, to find other ways to use the product, that's genius imo. 🤓
There are all sorts of ways to repurpose. @danielledanielle and @missjeanie approach that powder products can be eyeshadow products is a sound one. You'll find alternative ways to use things @CynthieLu, on your own and from others' experiences here on BIC. I've gotten great ideas from folks here.
@itsfi That Dior palette is GORGEOUS! I often look at these types of multi-product palettes and wish they were customizable. It's rare I find one that has all the shades I'd love together. How pretty is this one though... it's got a soft glam/classic romance feel to it!
@missjeanie, the colors in this set are ones I would go for if the items were sold individually so I'm excited to break this one in. It should not have taken so long, but lesson learned. So many lessons being learned. 😆 Customizable palettes would be so fun (and dangerous for my wallet as well). Off the top of my head, I feel like Trish McEvoy or Kjaer Weiss comes close to having or offering something like that. I'd love to see Makeup For Ever have something like that - they have empty palettes that can be filled for certain products and they have their MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Skin Cream Contour and Highlight Sculpting Palette that hits on a few products, but yes, something with the option for a base product, cheek products, lips, etc. would be great - as well as a good selection of items / shades that can fit into such a palette.
@itsfi I've held off on getting any of the MUFE palettes simply because I'm sure they must release it for customization soon. It feels only natural to that line!
@itsfi Good lord...how are you this organized?? 😮
I like that you're leaving us in the dark about the multitasking. As far as multitasking, I live in the neighborhood of everything that's a powder is an eyeshadow and anything with SPF is a multitasker.
hahaha, @danielledanielle, being organized helps me to stay sane and, let's just say, some days are better than others. 😅 Having my litte charts of what to wear and where to wear them and having these makeup bags already assembled and just waiting to be put to use definitely helps make the getting ready part of the morning go so much more smoothly and a good start to the day I will not object to! 😍
@danielledanielle I'm with you on all powders being shadows!!
@itsfi I haven't tried the About Face shadow sticks. I was looking forward to hearing what you'd thought about them to see if I need to be looking at them or not. Truthfully... While I love the idea of shadow sticks, they sit unused in my stash. So if it's not a stellar formula I can and should pass on them. I might need to to do a stick themed week to try and force myself to use them.
I think you made the right declutter decisions as well. If the shade is off... you won't ever reach for it, you'll grab the ones that you know work, run with the declutter feelings while they're here!!
Yeah @missjeanie, I feel like I’m more inclined to be choosy now with what I keep in my stash; well, maybe not for lip products which I’ve been admittedly slow to move through. That’s by choice. In my head, I have a plan to make my way through them and to pick what stays and what goes. But I’m not super motivated to put that plan into effect just yet. 😂
Ooouh, a stick capsule would be great. I do like the convenience of eyeshadow sticks. Right now, I’d say my favorites are from Bobbi Brown and Thrive. Interested in how the NARS fares but I wouldn’t plan on picking one up until the fall, maybe. Trying to be good. 😉
