What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@itsfi, so what you're saying is I need the bronzer brush because my beloved Sonia G Jumbo Bronzer takes forever to dry, so this is a good stand in... That's what I read, right ?? 🤣🤣
That is IG ZAKT LEE what I'm saying @danielledanielle!! 😂 Excellent job at reading between the lines and understanding itsfi - speak. 😝
@itsfi … you’re talking me into the Tom Ford Bronzer….
hahaha, I don't know if I'm supposed to respond with "You're welcome!" or "I'm sorry." @missjeanie 🤣 I don't think Emily Post covered this in her rules on etiquette. 🤔 I somehow think my audience will be a factor to be considered, so ...
to you, missjeanie, "you're welcome!! Happy to help!" 🛍
to your wallet, "Oooopsy. I'm sorry; will *try* not to let it happen again? 😬"
@itsfi lol you've got it right! I know most people these days are all about pigment pigment pigment, but I like a subtleness in my bronzers. Not that I need another bronzer... sale season... once sale season starts up!
@missjeanie, pigments are pretty, but 9.875 out of 10 times (with a +/- 0.125 margin of error 😉😅), I'm a "my <<insert part of face, as applicable>> but better" gal. 😁 What others may find boring, I consider my 'go to' - I'm good with being boring. 💗
@itsfi I hear you loud and clear! When someone complains a palette is lacking pigment, it peaks my interest.
I swear I have been doing a few capsules here and there since I started falling off my posts.... but alas... a fresh start! I like the Love is Love theme and was tempted to do something quite colourful to celebrate the start of Pride month, however work and personal commitments this week were better off a bit more conservative. I started to build a capsule then got distracted and it turns out I just meshed in some other products that were a part of project pan and/or just convenient to grab.
The products from this week and going into the weekend...
That Marc Jacobs eye palette. Another shoulda woulda. I love seeing it, and paired with About Face (which I have yet to dip my toe in, but yes to).
@missjeanieThere's sophistication to this edit 🤌🏽🤌🏽
@danielledanielle I reached for the Marc Jacobs palette everyday... had to force myself to use the Tom Ford one day just so that I could say I used it. This is one I'd consider panning at some point if I thought I could handle a larger palette!
I'm still getting into the About Face line... so far... interest peaked. I'm looking forward to taking a bigger peak at the line next time I'm in Ulta!
Ahhhh, the Marc Jacobs beauties in this capsule are making me nostalgic @missjeanie! That's one of his OG eyeshadow palette! I regret (well, somewhat) passing on a few of the eyeshadow palettes of his that I had. Yes, his New Nudes lip collection was great! I think I also found a good nude lipstick that I liked back in the day.
"I shouldn't like such an expensive lip balm so much." Hahaha! You know, missjeanie, that sentiment just speaks to me. 1000%
@itsfi I was tempted to throw in more Marc Jacobs! I still miss his beauty line. I know they weren’t all hits for everyone, but I miss so many products! I might still have a mascara unopened….
Every time I’ve pulled this TF lip balm out this week I’m more and more convinced that I need more!
@missjeanie, I loved the aesthetic of the MJ line - the packaging was so sleek and he did have a lot of palettes that I really thought were beautiful, even if they weren't necessarily colors I'd reach for often.
I feel like I have one (or more) of those Tom Ford lip clicky pens somewhere in my stash. 🤔 There was a stretch way back when where Tom Ford beauty products somehow seemed to find their way to my home, with some frequency, too! 😉
Nothing beats a fresh start @missjeanie and I agree, this is a great prompt and theme to jump into. I like the color scheme that I'm seeing unfold in your capsule. I'm picking up a lovely romantic rose kind of feel. 🌷
And wow, yes the Mac lip is a bold looking one. This is going to be a fun and beautiful color for you to wear. Brights for summer you say? I love that. 🤩
@CynthieLu I love a look in any shades of pink. Then it’s my lipstick I’m willing to branch out more with. I still after all these years go back to Mac for some fun lips!
I have 3 foundations in my larger makeup capsule for the week. It's a battle of the foundations week in that regard. Here's a full face edit from that capsule, focusing on the Tom Ford foundation. I used these beauties yesterday and Monday, with the Tom Ford Terra as a setting powder and the One/Size mattifying setting spray (not pictured) yesterday as it was forecasted to be the warmest day this week (and so far, that's proven to be true - boy was it warm!)
The surprise hit of this group was the Jason Wu plumping lip gloss - the first time I used it, the tingling from the plumpers in this one were a bit much and I thought it might get tossed by week's end. I don't know if I just wasn't accustomed to the zing from this one initially, but subsequent uses, while I could feel the tingling, were less stingy. I really like the shade - it's a good pink for me - not too pale or pasty, and not too bright. The glossiness and slightly plumper effect it gives is a nice touch as well.
I was also suprised by the Kevyn Aucoin eyeshadow palette - they performed better than I anticipated and that just means I need to keep being good about not picking up every eyeshadow palette that is released. 😂Or even most of them. You'd think having as many neutral nude/brown palettes as I do that it would be a piece of cake, but it's so much easier said than done. A work in (continual) process. 😆
It all fit in my makeup bag ... after 4 rounds of Tetris: The Makeup Edition 🤣
@itsfi your makeup bag is adorable! Which specific TF foundation is that?
@CookieGirl1, thank you. Love polka dots! 💖 It's the #TOM FORD Traceless Soft Matte Foundation 2.5 Linen (not that shade but I can't seem to tag a general product (and now the link is not showing up 😅). It went on sale a few months back, along with the stick foundation. I'm not sure if it's been reformulated; this one may be the earlier version, I believe).
@itsfi I've heard that TF's Soft Matte foundation is lovely! I've only tried the stick and it didn't work for me but maybe I'll try this one someday when it's on sale.
I'm glad everything eventually fit in your makeup bag @itsfi it's a cute one! 😊
Aah battle of the foundations this week? Another exciting match of products going head too head! 🥊 I'm very curious to hear how things go. TF feels intriguing.
I remember when the TF foundation went on sale earlier this year, I think it was almost half off on the site here, and it was selling out fast! I think I remember @CookieGirl1 picked it up to try, I think I missed out on a opportunity but that's the way it goes sometimes. I still have over half a tube of my liquid foundation and practically a full jar of a foundation balm. I don't want to purchase anything until they are mostly finished. It's so hard 😅😭
This is another beautiful product shot, you captured everything so elegantly in your spread. 🤍💛
@CynthieLu, it seems like it's a game of Tetris for my small-to-medium sized makeup bags. 🤣 I have smaller bags for my minimal makeup capsules, and some very roomy ones when I go with a more inclusive makeup capsule; the in-between capsules are a little harder to find the perfect bags to use. I'm working very hard on not taking that as a cue to pick up more makeup bags in that size category. 😝
Yeah, the Tom Ford sales that Sephora has on occasion can be quite fabulous. His beauties are a pretty penny at regular price so the 50% is great. I've had this foundation in one shade or another since it launched, which I *think* may go back to spring/summer 2020 (?), though that one could have been a reformulation. I recall picking up my first Tom Ford foundation and it was in a similar tube, from Neiman Marcus, before I recall Sephora started carrying TF. I know that @blackkitty2014 has gone through and used up his foundations before, perhaps even this one. The Sephora mark down on this foundation and his foundation stick may be to make room for his new foundation, Architecture - a soft blur formulation. I've heard it's a nice one for those with oily skin.
